Leveling clip problems solved. With many types of leveling systems one of the main problems people run into when removing the clips the next day, is that the bases of the clips do not all break properly below the tile at the base of the clip. This is caused by either thinset mortar coming up the grout lines and wedging the clip or the tiles pinching the clips holding them in place. In this video I give you a solution to this problem that will eliminate almost completely this problem and all your clips will break how they are supposed to at the base of the tile, leaving no legs sticking up above the tile. All tile installed by Sal DiBlasi, Elite-tile Company, in the Boston North Shore area. Sal, Just wanted to thank you. I used to play as an advanced DIY’er installing tile. I have not touched that tool collection in 10 years but have purchased a new house or “project” as my Daughter calls them. Anyway, starting a fairly elaborate by my standards tile installation and your mentoring videos are amazing to make me start thinking about all the nuances of installation again. So much appreciated. Ordered some of the products you have linked. Thanks for sharing those also.

The most clutch tip in this video was scraping joints before you place the clips so thinset doesn't smoosh out into the clips. That combined with undersized clips I installed my first floor without problems thanks so much Sal.

Great tip Sal. You are definitely the god father of tiling! I only use this method if I'm doing an 1/8 grout joints and run out of 1/8 clips and have to use 1/16 clips. I rarely have any issues with the clips getting stuck. I try to make sure I keep the joints clean so that doesn't happen. It is a great idea but for me an extra step would not be ideal when doing large sqft of a room.......I rather use different size clips for different applications. So I rather rely on the clips as my spacing to help quickly setting tile. This may be needed for some tile setters though. I do this 5 days a week but what do I do on my day off on a Saturday morning......WATCH Sal videos... Love your work Sal!

More great tips from you. I've always tried to break mine off in-line with the grout line, since even a slight angle could cause this issue. The newer versions of the clips don't seem to have this issue, at least that I've seen so far. Perhaps they are made weaker. What do you suggest for a 1/16" grout line (and clips) where you can't get a spacer narrower than the clip itself?

Good tip, Many professionals only show the advantages of a method or system they use, probably so that they do not have to admit that they run into problems. And many will ignore this solution because it takes more time and Time is Money for them, it damages their reputation and their Egos but as a DIY this tip is very useful, I can imagine that if you have to cut several clips later it will waste more time than solving the problem .before it arises.

Thanks! I’ve learned so much from your videos 😁. I have a question/video request; How do you stop a tile project for the day with levelers, then come back to finish the next day? We ended up putting a place holder in that had no mortar on it. Then we could put a clip in it for the night so the last tile that was mortared in place was level and the spacer/leveler stayed in place. I’m not sure if there was a better way?? I hope that made sense. Thanks!

probably a good tip for those who just cant work clean. i know you do good work sal but honestly cleanliness might not be your stong suite. i see those wedges and see thinset covering them and cringe, also when striking the thinset away from the tile edges if the margin trowel is held at the wrong angle it just pushes thinset to the tile edge and you cant have any of that when placing a clip. i guess im just anal, but none of my wedges have thinset on them and on average when doing a job with 1/16 clips and using them as my spacer (so a finished joint of 1/16 if rectified) i get maybe 1 clip that breaks wrong. so imo the best info on this subject is to be more careful on cleaniness, but most just cant do that, so i suppose this is good info for most others....

real tiler? i would love to see your 36 or longer plank job with a 1/16 0r perhaps slightly wider joint without clips? or at least see it compared to a job with clips. its impossible to get a plank job without clips to look like one with even if the slab is perfectly level . you see most long planks have a bow in the middle and without clips there is absolutely nothing you can do to prevent a rise where that joint meets the next staggerd tile, but with clips it actually splits all heights perfectly and can put a slight flex to flat until the thinset dries. if you take 2 plank tiles and hold them face to face you can see the wobble and if you apply pressure to the ends you can press that wobble out easily and thats what the clips do.....now perhaps with a square tile run straight pattern, i supoose you can get the floor just as flat, but not with planks, no way possible

Or... Stay clean! 1/8" will break out just fine. Thinset built up on the edge of the post/clip causes the failing break off. Also, thinset between the post/clip, and the tile, will cause the pattern gain that normally results from a sloppy messy installation.

Why would they produce 1mm wedges if you're not gonna use it as grout line distance? instead you put a bigger one... Time is money, and you're wasting it here, just use quality ones and no problem.

You lay your mirror wrong , it’s supposed to be troweled in all one direction, when you don’t you only get about 50%coverage under the tile which is prone to cracking in upcoming years, you’ve probably worked your whole life and never knew this no disrespect
