I am about to tile my new shower walls, and I did some research on the Rigid Level Max spin on system. They have 3 types of clips, one is for a straight joint, one is for a three way joint, and the last is for a four way joint. The one you showed us (4:37) looks like a three way joint clip, like the ones I bought. It has ridge at 90 degrees to the other ridge at the base. It is supposed to go in the corner of the tiles. You were putting them on a straight joint, and I believe that is why they pushed the tiles apart, and giving you problems. I am no expert, but I think that was your problem. By the way, thanks for going to the trouble of reviewing these systems.

I started using Lash before they were a Home Depot item. I upgraded to the Raimondi system. Now here is the issue I have with both. The Lash system clips have a pronounced curve that sometimes causes issues with placement. The Raimondi system does not always break properly below the tile surface. I had it when using the system it broke on installation and ripped open the top of my finger. I invested next in the RTC Spin Doctor system. I like this system the best. It has constantly broken off below the tile when removed. It has less of a curve than Lash and is easy to install. As a bonus, they allow corner application, which, when running low on clips can prolong your progress. It's easier to remove the caps from the clips when done than Lash or Raimondi, and there is a tool to help crank if you need that. I would like to see you make a video running the Spin Doctor. Thanks

Great video that helped make a decision on what type of leveling system to use thank you! Also I’m using almost identical tile as this. The 33% offset would that be the pattern to run with? Just one offset then full tile next and same offset again? Or would it be full tile then 33% and maybe 66%? Or is that personal preference after that? Hope I asked correctly lol thank you !

@@LandbergTileTV FWIW, the NTCA guidelines are a pretty good resource, and there are definitely times where a larger grout joint size may be appropriate....I certainly agree that smaller is (usually better), but occasionally 3/32" and 1/8" will be a better option. Just had to install some pretty awful 12x24 ungauged slate for one of my builders, had to break out the 1/4" spacers I used on another slate project years ago (in that case the architect actually specified 1/4")

Just finished tiling the master yesterday using the LASH system from Home Depot. This was the first time I've used a leveling system and I have to say that I'm on the fence about it (at least the LASH system anyway). There is a bit of lippage on a few tiles, which is frustrating. Matter of fact, I was going to grout today and didn't because I'm seriously considering replacing a few tiles to try again. I still have my shower to do, so I'll either like the system better after more practice or I'll move on to another system on my next tile job.

Good review 👍 I’ve never used but always wondered about the spin type. Wondered if they catch on the tile and move them. I assume this isn’t the case with Spin Doctor ones etc? If not, why not? Doesn’t any turning action mean the tiles might be moved? I suppose the same might be said about wedge type, but at least the “push” of the tile is only in one direction 🤔 Anyway great video 🇬🇧
@LandbergTileTV

Yes, sometimes the tiles move when you insert the wedge or tighten the spindle cap. You simply push the tiles back together 👊
@justinofboulder

I love the Progress profiles leveling system, but there is a learning curve and a few tricks. They make a red shim (designed to prevent scratching on marble) that helps reduce the twisting. If doing a large area, I will screw a board down and start building off the board (to help prevent movement). If working in a smaller room, I make my perimeter cuts tight and use wedges along the walls to prevent movement.

These systems help keep costs down too. Floating tiles adds the extra cost of thinset, and the time and labor to mix more buckets. Especially a 1/2" notch on a shitty floor. Poppin a tile up to float it, then finding out it wasnt enough and having to pop it up again. Or, now you have too much thinset and have to clean up all the squeeze. Waste of time! Im old school, and im gonna give the T Lock system a try

No, but bearing will wear off because it isn't designed for side ways movement. But Dewalt also make Flexvolt cordless mixer it would be better.

@@DustinHoffmansrq I agree! We have tried so many other types of thinset, but Versabond/LFT is the best consistency for installing, Not too sandy, just the right amount of glue, it works great!

It's not so the tiles are level to the world (like you'd get with a level or transit) they are just flat with each other.
@roselucas2760

T-800, nothings wrong with a level, in fact for a good tile job you should be using both a bubble and green laser level. The tile leveling systems help prevent lippage, an age old nemesis of many a professional tile installer. Especially when you’re tiling large expanses, where it becomes increasingly difficult to go back and check if a tile(s) is even with it’s next door neighbors.

They were originally designed for very large floor tiles, the type you get in big commercial spaces where getting a perfectly even surface, over such a large surface area would be very time consuming or difficult with just a level. They also allow (if im not mistaken) people to be able to walk over them without ruining the floor, which is probably more important on construction sites with numpties that'll walk over them even when barriered off, where you can be certain it's you who'll have to put it right. I'd rather a tiler used this and ensured they gave a perfect finish - not that they aren't capable, but because people can forget things, accidentally nudge tiles out of alignment, be slightly off, than to be old fashioned and over confident, believing they are perfect. I'd rather spend that extra £30 as a client on some plastic clips and ensuring a quality outcome than to risk a bad job for whatever reason, and I'm sure that is more than easily recovered by a skilled trademan's hourly rate who can spend more of his time using his skill in area's it's needed, and not wasting it on constantly checking a bubble on a level.

@charleshetrick3152

matt motta I agree, it’s is effectively pulling the bottom and top planes together and could indeed cause problems. If the spacers were mechanically adhered to the substrate I maybe could see using them with the huge tiles some people seem to like these days. I did nothing but set tile for about five years with my old man and he’d have died laughing if he saw anyone using these. He made sure every surface we ever covered was properly prepped so this kind of thing was never an issue. I’m guessing enough of the old timers have exited the business and there’s enough DIYers out there that this make work for them and the noobs.

There’s a video where someone used pieces of glass in place of tiles and it worked well. In my experience, the thinset needs to be solid enough to not sink when you spread it, yet wet enough to stick to your finger when you touch it. That way it sticks to the tiles and the subfloor when you level them.

You put in 6 wedges, say that they're good, but not great, and still promote the other/more expensive brand. Not sure how you can tell after 6 clips/wedges. They didn't break and they did their job, but yet again you're promoting the more expensive brand. Why is that?
