Field stripping and cleaning the classic Marlin 336. A demonstration of how I take off the lever, remove the bolt and ejector, and clean the rifle. Again, you might do it differently, but this is what I have done for many years. Works for me.

Mr. Hickok, thank you, superlative work. I'm a novice 336 owner in 30-30 and want to share my learning experience. I began having misfires after about 150 rounds through my new rifle. After wasted back and forth with the dealer and an alleged gunsmith, to no avail, a local friend was my real help. He knew that the firing pin had seized inside the bolt, and used simple brake cleaner to free it. Outside the rifle of course. Then some oil and off I went. No more problem.

Ballistol puts me in mind of dirty sweat socks and black licorice, but I find it inoffensive. The odor dissipates quickly and the stuff works great. I shoot BP and smokeless and it is one of the few chemicals that works with both, and the claim that it "seasons" the metal so each successive cleaning is easier has proven true in my experience.

Very helpful and informative video, thanks! I just inherited my grandfather's 1954 336 Texan in .35 Remington and it is identical to the one shown here. My grandfather was a military man and always maintained his firearms, so it cycles well and the bore is bright & shiny but I'll be giving it a good once-over all the same. The more I handle it, the more I can't wait to put some rounds downrange with it!

My grandfather had gifted me two rifles, his Winchester Model 67 shot gun in 20 GA and his Marlin 336W in 30-30. I remember first shooting the Marlin and cleaning it and it was such a joy to use. My grandfather has been gone for almost 5 years and cherish those rifles dearly.

It really is the greatest thing ever. After Hickok's Glock cleaning video came out, I started using Ballistol on ALL my guns; rifels, semi-autos, revolvers...my buddy even used it on a gold Deagle...it works for EVERYTHING...absolutely awesome! It has since replaced about 6 different cleaning products I had.

Thank you so much for this video! I inherited my Dad's 336C, in .35 Remington, and haven't fired it, because I didn't know how to clean it. I've kept it cased, and oiled as best I could, but now am going to clean it, lube it, and eventually take it out and enjoy it. Thanks again!

Good info. When cleaning all my firearms, I oil liberally once the solvent is removed, then blow the excess oil off with compressed air. Seems to leave a very thin layer without the pooling from a wipe down where I can't reach the nooks and crannies. Love watching your videos.

about 50 years ago the firing pin on my brothers marlin broke while we were hunting mule deer near Williams lake BC. My dad replaced the pin in the field with a filed down tang from a chain saw file. That pin was still working just fine when I saw the rifle again a few months ago. On another note, its too bad Winchesters could not be cleaned as easily as Marlins. Just a word of caution when using bore snake - make sure you pull it strait through the bore without rubbing the crown - otherwise you will damage it.
@waynevreeland3141

Bought a marlin 336 Friday. I shot it Saturday and it ran so smooth and accurate I couldn’t remove the grin from my face the only problem is the 30-30 ammo is so expensive. So Sunday I picked up a Henry .22 classic lever action so I can shoot lever action all day. Broke and wife is mad, but it was worth it.

jaden Smythe I am also. You aught to get yourself one. They are very well made guns that are pretty affordable. Tbh I'd take a Marlin over winchester and Henry any day.

If you can, find a pre-1984 one without the cross block safety. They seem to be better built.

Master, thank you for your very instructional video. The wifey just got me a Marlin for Christmas and I was wondering about the cleaning and your video was very helpful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Yeah, you've got a point. And something about it isn't right. I use it sometimes, but it is the only spray that makes me cough and choke. Doesn't happen with Hoppe's or Rem oil. Can it really be that "friendly" if it makes me choke and cough?

Also, Starrett has a lubricant that should work okay on guns, but it smells like an old tent.

I don't know why, but Hoppe's smells heavenly to me. I could shoot some up my nose and be forever satisfied.

The old JM stamped Marlins were great. Freedom group bought them and they were horrible for a few years. Now it is hit & miss with the QC, I would never buy a Marlin lever action rifle over the internet, that I hadn't handled. Last week I looked at the 1895SBL 45-70 Stainless Steel and both samples had issues. Fixers? Sure, if they'd drop the price $300 bucks or so.

Got a 1911 Winchester 1894 30-30 yesterday, $500, been drilled and tapped but did come with the mount and scope. I bought it simply to have this history in my hands. I dont own very many firearms made after Vietnam era. Just adore history. This is my favorite KZfaq channel, but Demolition Ranch, and Brandon Herrera are fun times lol

Thank you I've got a 336 and didn't know how to break it down. Perfect timing also, I'm going to the range in a couple of days and wanted to sight it in.

Thank you. I should know by now to just go straight to Hickok45 instead of looking at generic how to videos. Watched 3 on this (lever action cleaning) that were downright horrible....I now feel confident to do this without watching step by step another video. Thanks for everything you do to make firearm ownership so enjoyable.

Your words about loose screws toward the end of the video were very reassuring to me. I have a Hawes Firearms Western Marshall .357 Magnum and I always need to tighten its screws after I have been at the range. I had always been distressed about that but it is the first gun I ever bought and I do not want to part with it. It is a somewhat old firearm so that's just what it is going to do, nothing to be upset about.

Great vid AGAIN Hickok! I ended up buying a Marlin a few months ago largely because of one of your shooting videos. To my mind, they're the best lever gun made. Not necessarily because of quality (I'd still love to get a Henry and and older Winchester) although they are a great quality gun. It's because they're SO EASY to take apart and clean. GREAT for the first time lever gun buyer in my opinion. Winchester and Henry both have a few more road blocks. Anyway, nice vid, sweet gun. I LOVE mine.
