Lexus LS 500 Review | Twin Turbo or Hybrid?

We take a look at the new 2019 LS500 to make an executive decision on whether someone should choose the Hybrid V6 or the Twin Turbo V6. New or used Lexus has been known for reliability and also being too conservative. With the current generation, ES and LC500 things are changing. But is that enough to keep the large Sedan afloat when BMW, Audi, Mercedes and now Genesis are listing serious hardware and tech to stay relevant?

I've owned a Lexus LS400, LS430, LS460 and now I own the LS500. OMG this vehicle is AMAZING!... one of a kind! Once I got into and drove that LS400...."I was hooked"! But this LS500 is above all the others. It has NO bad angles....Its BEAUTIFUL INSIDE "AND" OUT! Lexus pays close attention to detail. At night the car has an unmistakable elegance with well arranged soft lighting...inside and out. I do not take road trips in my 500 in fear I may fall asleep...it's that comfortable. It has a spot-on pick up when in sports mode. Be Careful...you will be at 90mph thinking you're at 65 to get on the highway. Its no doubt "The Best" of the series. Drive one and you will understand why reviewers rate this car so well and above others. He was correct in relaying the menu options are not easy. So many features Lexus ask new drivers to attend a learn your car class {with food} and provide tech assist for one year free. {I shouldn't say free with the price of this car} Its the ULTIMATE LUXURY SEDAN!

But reviewers don't "rate this car so well and above others." Virtually every reviewer on KZfaq, the web or print magazines has all but unleashed their bowels on it. There's a consensus that it doesn't match any of its major rivals in room, ride comfort, performance or technology. Savagegeese himself comments in this video's thread that Lexus beats luxury rivals only in durability. What reviews have you been seeing?

@Mr. Commonsense It was an airbag recall regarding issues from a third party manufacturer. Welcome to airbags. NO manufacturer builds their own units. Its autoliv, takada or whoever else they use. Those units need to be replaced. Simple as that. That does not represent the engine, drivetrain, chassis or any other components manufactured by Lexus so cut the crap. Recalls that involve OEM component failure, transmission issues and such are valid complaints. GM's Colorado having airbags blowing while off roading is a valid example of a recall that questions reliability. The more you know. Want long term reliability? Here are actual statistics. dashboard-light.com/reports/Lexus.html

Irony that a positive review from an unbiased reviewer ends up with folks claiming he's biased. Savage has literally complained about a variety of things on the car, and on Lexus's in general before and yet folks call him biased. Maybe, just maybe you folks just hate Lexus's for building great vehicles. Ever think of that? Lexus gets enough and more criticism and yet you folks can't give credit where its due. I agree. I just can't reconcile the fact that a flagship $100K luxury car even offers a V-6, even if it is a twin turbo. Also, that piped in exhaust note sounds terrible. That is NOT how a big body flagship luxury car should sound--ever. I'd be fine with shutting off cylinders for the sake of "green" (blah blah) but I can't deal with the puny anemic sounding engines and the phony speaker aided exhaust sounds.

Also on cl, there was a debate about the incoming of the ev era, and some members rightfully pointed out that this would have consequences in the development of combustion engines models. Also the SUV craze going on isn't helping. But I'm confident that Lexus will at least purpose one coupe or Sedan in it's portfolio, it's the dna of their brand and they could have a profitable niche from that. Especially when every concurrence would have left the segment or gone bankrupt, there will be a market there. Also, maybe we are going to see the first Lexus is Ev.

You know, once upon a time, Lincoln and Cadillac used to own this space. It is difficult to fathom how Ford and GM could squander this lofty position; it was not due to a lack of engineering skill or development resources. They lost their market because they abused their customers' trust by selling them substandard products. There is only one way they can come back -- do what Lexus do -- put the customer first.

The thunking, rough ride and harshness over broken pavement is the tires. Switching from run-flat to regular tires takes just about all of that away. I also saw a minor (1-2mpg) increase in fuel economy after the change. The rain sensitive wipers are not sensitive enough with misting or light rain. A firmware upgrade should fix this. The climate control doesn't pump enough heat out of the face vents from a cold start. The heat is there very quickly and I can manually set it to warm the cabin, otherwise left to its own devices the car will warm the foot well while giving me a draft of coolish air out the face vents.A firmware upgrade should fix this. For such a long car the rear seats don't have near the legroom of the S or the 7, it's ok but not great. On the other hand the power seats in the rear of the new LS adjust in more directions than the equivalent seats in the S, I'm sure the mechanism and motors for this take up some number of inches. At 30,000 miles the only problem I have had so far is part of the massage on the drivers seat has an air leak. I'm hugely impressed; the first year of production of a completely new model with so much stuff going on and it all works.

@FawltyExposures
@FawltyExposures 3 жыл бұрын
@@MPower396 at 90,000 and nearly three years old now. Had to have the massage fixed three times in the driver seat and twice in the passenger. Lexus replaced the controllers the last time they fixed them and the pressure of the massage has been reduced. Both sides had the same issues return after that and I didn't bother having them fixed again. There is a known issue with the front brakes making a thunking noise when coming to a stop. The dealer never found a fix for it, I drove a 2019 which didn't do it. I assume they have a fix for it now. The brakes are generally noisy but they function just fine. Still on the original braking components all the way round, which is a nice saving. I don't believe I had to have a repair which wasn't in warranty. Service costs have been $250 to $450 for the 10k intervals, which seems more than reasonable to me. I'm not happy with the wipers, they smear water and leave lines, according to my service advisor Lexus made the "rubber" stiffer. I had a loaner with exactly the same issue. This is enough to put me off buying another LS until they fix this. The logic for both the rain sensitive wipers and the automatic high beam is sub par, I mostly operate both manually. I just purchased a BMW 750i, 523HP vs 414 for the LS, and the difference feels bigger than that. I have a 328i which doesn't feel too much slower than the LS. 750 also wins on massage, ride, seats and general cabin comfort, quietness, wipers, headlights and putting a grin on my face because it's a rocket. The iDrive in the 750 beats the pants off the touchpad in the LS, also the BMW has buttons for things. The LS has few buttons, leaving you to click click click click on the trackpad to turn on heated seats for example. LS has the looks, three years later and people are still staring at it and taking pictures. The Mark Levinson is as good as the Bowers and Wilkins and approaching half the price. The 2021 LS may close the gap, but after just four days with the 750 that gap is pretty huge.

@@Mabeylater293 The engine comes to temperature quickly and the heat is available, but the Lexus sits on it and sends some heat to the windshield, what I want is a blast of hot air into the cabin. Turn the fan up and put it out everywhere. Otherwise the "Climate Concierge" does an OK job. Not nearly as good as my previous GS350, that was flawless HVAC and enhanced the luxury, the LS is just OK.

You do such a great job reviewing cars. It is a shame only 200k subscribers know this, and that most manufactures are afraid of an honest review. It is nice to see a serious review, of a few people, with great humor, who do not speak endlessly about "quirks and features" for 20 minutes. Something to actually help me choose a new car, and if I should lease or buy!

Oddly, I had a hard time watching the forward facing driving shots because of the reflection in that huge hood... almost vertigo inducing. I remember getting a ride In a LS400 from a business associate of my dad's around '90 - 91. The driver floored it and the impressive thing was how it accelerated with that muted NA 8. At the time, it felt very quick for a bulky sedan. The owner was so proud of his purchase and, honestly, I think of the gamble he took at buying the first luxury sedan out of Toyota. He could have picked up any German offering at the time, but the LS was something special.

@savagegeese - I am very interested to know about your opinions overall on how this stacks up against the Genesis G90. Especially the 5.0 Genesis G90 HTRAC, which would seem to be a competitor to this vehicle. Ride quality, handling, interior quality, etc.

I love this car and it’s my dream. I’m having an 05 Lexus ES and it is just a blessing to drive. Smooth, comfortable and quite. Such a reliable car from time to time. I would love to be able to buy an LS one day. I really hope that Lexus will bring back their V8 instead of the V6 with 2 turbos.

Speaking of the changes needed to be done through the menu screens, I have 2 Lexuses. A 2011 ES350 & a 2017 ES350. On the '17 I need to go through 2 screens in order to turn the A/C on or off. On the '11 I just push a button. That's progress?

Looking for a Lexus and trying to decide on a twin turbo 2018 LS or 2020 RX 450h. Want serenity and plushy and soft ride but I was shocked to hear that LS suspension was hard. Which ride do you prefer better when comparing RX and LS when it comes to ride comfort? Thank you.

Hey Victor, if you still haven’t bought a car I would definitely recommend the LS 500 with air ride (here in Australia air ride is standard but from my understanding in the states it’s an option). The RX450h is still an amazing ride but nothing compares to the LS 500. I’ve done a few reviews out on them including ones where I sit in the back and get driven around. Feel free to check it out :-)

Does the gearbox always simulate gears in the hybrid version? Or is it just with the sporty modes? Just wondering because I've got the GS450H and I love the CVT in it. It never simulates gears and I think it would be a terrible idea if it did. I understand it sounds annoying in a prius when you floor it but it's not a problem with my car since the v6 sounds great. No artificial engine noise in my old car :)

I drove the Executive model for a day. And you are 1000% correct with everything. Exactly how i felt about the LS. Only think I was hoping it to be more “Grand” with the interior. But i guess they win you over with its simplicity. Surprisingly, there was a bit too much road noise for my liking. I was hoping to fall asleep. I didnt drive the Hybrid. But it would be the one Id get. Too bad Lexus loves to make you buy predestined models and options. I wished they made a hybrid F sport.

Owning a 2004 Lexus LS430, I think LS must always have a V8 power engine. I wish they would have opted for a small block V8 instead of V6. And yes … my 15 year old LS430 is as good as ever, so I have no plans to get a new one soon. This is what Lexus does the best that no one else can do.

5.0 L V8, that’s what I wish was in it. I love this car. I have an LS460 with the 4.6 L V8. I’ve seen so many of these in person. I’ve sat in several too because I go to a million different Lexus dealers lol. The freaking interior is insane. Literally the best ever. Lexus of Escondido has a ton of these. And even an LFA. Lexus of wood,and Hills has an LFA as well.

Great review and you are one of my favorite reviewers. You are spot on. I tried to purchase and LS 500 a few months back but after driving it versus a BMW twin turbo V8 7 series, I just could not do it. I would have gotten a LC 500 but I prefer a big sedan. If and when Lexus places a naturally aspirated V8 (like the LC 500) in the LS I will pick one up. I am a fan of Lexus dependability. (Had a SC 430 and loved it.) I want to drive an LS however I am still young enough that I would like some excitement when I do. Come on Lexus I am waiting on you. I am getting the wife a RX or ES 350 in the next 30 days so I am a believer in your products.

Regarding the sound... I wish they used a similar approach that they have used in the IS 350, GS 350, etc. and of course now the LC 500. The LC has "enhanced" engine noise that isn't digital and sounds very, VERY good.
