After a recent follow up visit with a specialist, we decided we needed to sit down and explain a few things about Mark's condition, how it affects him, our marriage, our children, and how we interact with others. Many have been praying for wisdom to know what causes his condition, grace to endure the symptoms, and a lot more. So today, Sara and Mark sat down to explain how life with Paroxysmal kinesogenic Dystonia/Dyskinesia affects our family, our ministry, and everything else.
We answer the questions of what brought this on, will our children have this condition, how do we keep Mark and everyone safe, and what are we planning to do going forward. We talked about testing, technology, and other aids to help us understand, mitigate, and hopefully overcome some of the obstacles that come with this diagnosis and what we are told to expect in the future.
If you know someone with Dystonia, have a family member with a debilitating condition, interact with adults with special needs, or know our family, you need to watch this video. There is so little awareness of this condition in general that we feel compelled to be very open and transparent with everyone so that they can not only understand, but help us as we seek to live our lives to the glory of God in the context of marriage, parenting, church, and our community as a whole.
Thanks for watching, for praying, for sharing, for encouraging. We are here to encourage and equip others and we hope this video fulfills a part of that desire. We also hope that people understand that we share our struggles because we know many others deal with conditions that are much worse, who endure much more pain, and who miss out on much of what most people consider "normal life". Mark's condition is permanent and progressive as far as we understand it, but symptoms are intermittent (daily, but not constant) and we hope this video is received as what it was meant to be: informative and encouraging.
For more videos on Dystonia, including samples of what it looks like for me (symptoms vary at times and in individual cases) you can view our playlist here-

Even though I have had symptoms for 20 years, I never heard the diagnosis until my brother was diagnosed 10 years ago and I only know 1 other person with the condition. I'm glad to be able to shed some light on the situation and raise awareness for others.

I've been told that I have dystonia but you are the first one that I can totally understand. I'm so much like you. I use noise canceling headphones at times. They are bose. A occupational therapist with dystonia suggest that I get a pair because she said they will help. I really hate the randomness of it you're right. There's times that one thing will be just fine and then the next time you try it or it happens it triggers.

Hiya, I hope you are all well. Thank you for doing this video. I have been battling with the same thing since 2016, I had problems with muscle spasms since I was a child, but I was told it was to do with growing up. My daughter had a stroke in utero in 2011 and we was told she may not survive. She was born 6 weeks after we found out about the stroke. We was told she had cerbral palsy and left to it. When she was 15 months she started having seizures and would go into status epilipticus. We would end up in hosptail every couple of weeks with the hosptail trying to bring her round. In 2016 we was told that of the seizures carry on she would eventually die. A consultant surgested brain surgery. She had a year of tests. During this time I was going through stages where my legs would just stop working. My daughter had the surgery and she as been seizure free since 2017. Since this my health as gotten worse and during the corna virus, the spams spead all over my body mainly in my neck which causes me not to be able to breath. I have been trying to get help for it since 2016, I have been told that I have fibromyalgia and it was surgested I have gotten dystonia. But they will not fully diagnosed me due to needing a genetic test. My mom has similar symptoms as me but she does not have dystonic storms. I have been feeling low and like I have let people in my life down because one minute I am ok and the next I am having a storm. I use ear buds most of the time to try and deal with the noises and my partner and daughter know when I need space.

It sounds like you have had quite a trial, with ups and downs and very difficult decisions to make. We understand these challenges all too well and we may have some ideas to help with the Dystonic storms. Feel free to reach out via our Facebook page if we can be of any assistance to you. Thanks for commenting, it gives us opportunity to connect with others who may be dealing with similar circumstances.
