This week we are learning how to mold and cast your hand! we are using Alginate to make a silicone mold to cast my hand with resin. This is called lifecasting and its way more fun than I thought it would be. Here are some of the videos that will help you out when looking to do some body part casting.

Hello everyone!! Lots of great ideas to help me out down here!! I think the first thing I’m going to try is to just not use the pressure pot.. and see what happens. I will have a shop update after the next project and I can tell you then what worked the best.

I've had success with a two-step process - instead of casting resin directly in the alginate, I use hydrocal plaster. Then, I make a silicone mold from the plaster and cast resin into that mold. Solves the moisture issue while still allowing for the alginate (important if you're looking for non-toxic - e.g. in my case because I'm dealing with babies)

I didn’t go through the comments so I’m not sure if anyone has suggested this and I’ve never worked with it before but maybe the mold needs mor time to dry out before you put in the resin. I’ve seen Nick Zammeti use molds with resin and they came out clear but I don’t know what he was using. Just some suggestions from a novice and I know this was 4 years ago but I hope everything worked out. I really like your work.😊❤

Thank you Deborah.. I’m glad you like my videos.. I’ve learned to just cast with plaster and then make a silicone mold, they turn out awesome after that.. the moisture in the alginate is just too much.. I’m sure Nick was using different materials than me.. We have made lots of hands since this video.. They all turn out fantastic. 😊😊

I don't have a pressure pot, but I did put the mold in the sun for awhile, then I carefully took the mol out of the cup and dried it a bit and dumped out the water that was already forming in the mold, then put it back in the cup and used my heat gun on the inside to bring up the temperature of the alginate mold for when the resin got poured in it, it wouldn't be such a drastic temperature difference ...and filled my hand with cut up golf tees and then put a ball in the wrist...did it clear..and it came out pretty damn cool!!! Only thing was it looked like my hand was wet (which I kind of liked!), had like water or sweat beads on the outside of the fingers. The tees and the ball mostly floated up to the palm and wrist, there was a few in the thumb...but also thought if I filled the spam with as much as I could, it wouldn't be as much of a deep pour as it would have been just pouring it all in the empty space. I just used counter top platinum, but I think I AM GOING TO TRY And find some of that smooth on rubber silicon to make the mold out of and put some glow in dark and flouresant tint i it...I am trying to make a hand for a golfer that wants to use it for his glove to put on it to dry. It is a bit more challenging to arrange your fingers to where I can fit the glove on it when it comes out, then I thought it was going to be. I would love to send you a picture but I dont know how to attach one for you to see, if you can tell me how to do it, I will. In the final one I do, I am going to put a steel ring into the wrist (top of the mold), SO THAT HE CAN HANG IT FROM HIS GOLF BAG. If you have any tips or ideas for me, please let me know. I have casted a ton of hands, feet and so on for people, just out of a casting powder, I have had the problem that you had with the space on the bottom of the fingers...you can solve that by pouring in just a little resin and rolling it around, I have also poured a little in, then poured it out, pouring it back in and then rolling it around to make sure you have it all in the bottom of the mold where your fingers are curved, then I always tap mine on the counter and put it at an angle and tap it around to make sure I have all the crevices full. But I am super interested in your pressure pot!!! What can I do to create this on a budget??? Your videos are awesome and I have been stalking you on you tube!!! Thanks so much!!!

I think this is a fantastic idea. I have seen some type of dental grade molding media but I'm not quite sure of the name. That might give you exactly what you want while trying to do your whole arm. you could use bodydouble straight onto your skin (instead of alginate) as it's not water based, or make initial cast with hydrocal and make a silicone mold that you'll pour the resin into.

Hello, i am a beginner. And i have a question. On the Fingers of the first resin hans were inside holes, i think from air bubbles. It is possible, to put the alginate mas into the vakuumbox for only a few seconds? So the air bubbles get up like to use resin?
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 4 жыл бұрын
Vero Fluegel The way I had my hand positioned in the alginate created a space that was hard to fill with resin.. after that hand I positioned my hand better in the alginate so that wouldn’t happen again.

If the water is pushed out of the Alginate by the pressure, try putting it in the pressure pot before you put resin in, then cast the resin in a separate cycle.

Great video. I compete in arm wrestling and I was thinking of making a cast of my hand and modifying it to make it usable as an exercise tool. How strong is that apoxy? Do you think it can handle roughly 100lb of force? Like, if I were to lay my fingers out in an L shape, and then put force into those fingers kind of thing?
@JakeThompson
@JakeThompson 2 жыл бұрын
This is a pretty unique question.. I’m not sure of the arm wrestling strength of resin but I’m sure it would be ok, although I have no way of knowing that for sure.. the resin is pretty tough though

Could you take the cast alginate out of the bucket and allow it to dry more over a few days and then cast the hand? I don't know anything about alginate and very little about epoxy, but I'd think that if the mould could be allowed to dry you could get the clarity you're after!!😁👍

When you have an alginate mol, it is made to cast right away. I did keep dumping out the water and took the mold out of the bucket very carefully and dried it off in the sun, but used the heat gun on the inside very lightly before pouring, but all this was done in a matter of 20 minutes, because you dont want the mold to shrink up due to it drying out, you lose alot of the detail that way.

Seems to me you need to take the Alginate out of the pail and let it dry before you use the resin and pressure. I am pretty positive you would want to air dry it instead of oven, just a simple fan would do, let it dry over night in this fashion before doing resin.
