To The Top Crane
In this video I use our Tadano 180g-5 to set some 120 foot long bridge beams/girders. The beams weigh approximately 29,000 pounds. The crane is configured with 110,000 pounds of counterweight, full span outriggers, 146 feet of main boom.

Hey Jimmy, A while back on a livestream I asked you for advice on how to get into the crane world. I took your advice and arranged for a few days where I could shadow I crane operator at a local crane hire company. Those days were a blast, and on top of it all he gave me an opportunity to actually operate the crane at the end of a day where no people were walking around (just playing, no actual lifting was done by me). Apparently I have a knack for it, and the company is offering me an opportunity for an apprenticeship with paid for training! Now I have to make the actual decision on leaving my current job (which is slowly picking up again post covid) with permanent contract. However I feel like this is a new opportunity for more growth and a new challenge in life. Still a difficult decision.... In any case, thanks for the advice, and I hope that you and the rest of your family will be doing okay. I love your video's, thanks for making them.

Jimmy your a BEAST man!!!! I' sorry to hear about your father in law condolences to your wife bro. That's a HUGE beam, man I respect your job so much. I couldn't do it, I quit rigging and operating because of the stress. Hoisting for high-rise construction in downtown metropolitan zones, all the pedestrians combined with stupid flaggers is a real drag, thank god we didn't kill anyone, came close. Safety is #1

Jimmy sorry for your loss I do understand we lost my mother in law April 20th of this year totally unexpected she was 83 in great health. Will be praying for you We have had a tough year in other ways as well. Good to see you post another video buddy. God Bless!

In my area right now we have a crane forest, some they rebuilding our oil refinery that exploded April 26 2019, been lots of heavy pieces brought in by barge and transported down to the refinery rebuild, watching your video reminds me of watching them stand some 400 tone pieces up in past few weeks

Actually on this one, one end touched down before the other. The bridge structure was a little higher on the far side.

Very smooth rotation on that second one. Almost looks like you know what you're doing there. With the cost of the crane rental, seems foolish not to hire at least a second truck to runs those beams out to the site, and keep you busy.

Is the client charged the full hourly rate when the machine stays set up waiting? Or is it an equipment-only rate while you aren’t there operating? How do you handle this situation?

My heart goes out to you an your family in these hard times. Wishing you all best health!! Now a question? From start to finish lift. What do you figure the total boom deflection was on 28 thousand? As you boom out an cable in , how do you figure the boom deflection? I am assuming?? As the farther you boom out from a 90° the load factor increases the boom deflection right?

Thanks for the thoughts! As the radius increases, so does the boom deflection. The closer to flat the boom gets, the more it will bend. I don't generally have to calculate the deflection. I just have to compensate for it as it happens during the times when I am picking the piece up and setting it down. If the deflection isn't compensated for, the piece can move abruptly and quite far when it is picked up. Based on the computer, I had close to five feet of deflection (or change in radius) when I set the piece down. Many thanks for watching! 🏗

@@ToTheTopCrane Thank you for the answer❣️ and a year an half ago I remember you talking about the ( chart) So if in my mind is figuring right, the boom maximum weight failure rate on the chart, would be based on the Angle of the boom radius angle. So if your boom angle was say? 80 ° an the maximum lift was rated at 100 tons lift capacity, then if you had to boom down to? Say 45° radius them our maximum amount of weight lift would half @ 45~50 ton.. So if I am understanding this, You have to know your maximum boom extend and the maximum boom extended degree radius of a job. Before you can make a lift right? This gives me a headache an also scares the crap out of me! Any miscalculation could be tragic... Wow I never realized how much was involved untill now. I figured you drive out an pick it up place it an go home!! Your job is too scary an complicated. 👍

Condolences on your families lose Jimmy, I thought you had fallen off the face of the earth. Are they painting those later or are they going to be fully enclosed in concrete, would have thought they would prepaint them before coming to site.

Was watching a KZfaq video yesterday and he (not the operator) was talking about “rigging mode” on a crane. Is there such a thing?

There is a rigging mode. It shuts off a lot of the safety stuff and is there for crane assembly/disassembly operations.

@@ToTheTopCrane pretty sure I use it daily just for laying the boom in the cradle because I'm too lazy to hold the override with the two-block lmao. Nice to be able to watch what we do in 10 minutes instead of the hour set up and long waits on the trucks to get there that normally comes along with those jobs. Fun fact the shackles are actually allowed to be picked with up to a 90 degree angle as long as you cut the capacity in half.
