Our little cabin in the wild is really starting to take shape against its beautiful mountain backdrop. In our new cabin build series episode, we start to install the roof on our light steel frame construction (LSF).
We've been building our tiny house with light guage steel framing, learning new skills as we DIY our way through the cabin build process. This little metal frame house will be our new home in the woods, where we'll live off grid as we renovate the stone barn on our property. Follow along as we develop new building skills and hone our light steel frame house construction techniques along the way.

A living roof is going to add a lot of weight, which the frame hasn't been engineered to support. Most living rooves I've seen are supported by big timber constructions, check out Kris Harbour Natural Building here on YT, he recently did an earthbag building with one. If you're not comfortable jumping up and down on the roof it might not be right for a living one. For your corrugated iron, you ideally want at least two corrugations overlap otherwise you'll get water wicking up and over. It's best to start laying from the downwind side and work back toward the windy side, laying each sheet over the one before. Overlapping that way helps reduce the chance of the wind lifting the roof and of it driving water in. I do suspect your battens are very undersized, though I'm surprised the frame didn't come with metal tophats/purlins/battens for installing the roof. The main force you're working against with metal rooves is uplift from wind, so the risk is that the screws will pull out of that wood or break it. For timber you usually want a lot of embedment for the screw (~30mm) plus a lot of extra meat around it so it doesn't split. Steel tophats would be easier in this situation and you might only need three, maybe four, but 35x70 or 45x90 pine would probably do the job as well, though they add more weight to the frame below. Apologies for being that PITA person, in my defence we had 90-120km/hr winds go through here a few weeks back, so it's fresh in my mind. I hope you get long weekends and holidays there, it must be painful only getting to spend a short time there working on the dream! Good luck!!

I have experience with both Green roof Good to regulate temperature but the weight should not be underestimated and I doubt the structure will cope without significant changes Metal roof Will be better for water collection but will be noisy in the rain . You could paint it to camouflage it and would suggest acoustic insulation Either way I love the way the project is developing

option A is the most logical option but solar panels have some weight and im not sure how strong your structure is, i am currently working with this metal and it is normally used for renovating inside. or you build one on the Ground wich is adaptable to flip the solar to the left or right with a few angles for optimal sun exposure in case of summer/winter. so a tip could be flexible solar panels for weight distribution.

@alonsoxoraique

B. Absolutely. Beside your reasons, you will have more isolation from heat and cold and easiest maintenance (no maintenance) on the roof. Plus you need to have some weight over the roof to keep it in place on windy days. That is the reason why you see sometimes big stones over a roof such as yours. If you put solar panels on the roof, the wind will create 2 forces pulling up the roof: one from the roof itself and another from the solar panels. Your solar panels will be oriented south and , if I’m not wrong, at your zone the strongest winds come from the north (cierzo?). So it will impact on the south-inclined solar panels and create a huge force upwards. Sorry for my not-so-good english. I am spanish.

Almost at the end of the videos :D I wouldnt do the green roof, its a lot of weight especially when filled with dirt and dirt that is wet weighs a lot, and it would also stain all your you walls everytime it rains. Solarpanels are an option but the roof would take up a lot of heat because its steel underneath so inside would be boiling hot I think. Have you guys thought about small windmills for electricity together with a big housebattery? You r on a mountainside so there is a lot of wind to catch and they are easy to maintain and there are models that look like trees to blend in with the surroundings.
@SmithsdaleFarm

Yes it’s a hard decision about the roof…! Thanks for your opinions on both! Wind power is definitely an interesting idea and one we will look at in the future. We do have quite decent wind speed sometimes that it would be great to harness!

DEWALT 20V MAX Metal Shear Kit, Swivel Head, 18GA (DCS491M2), there are other models available as well depending upon what thickness the metal is. No sparks and they are much nicer to use. option B would look lovely but option A would be more secure, I don't know about your area of Spain, but where we are, in Andalucia, properties in the campo that are not lived in permanently get their solar equipment stolen on a regular basis. You can always change it to a living roof when you move their permanently. Also with option B you'll need to make sure the structure can take the load.

Option A if you don’t put your solar panels on your roof you will need to build something else to support your panels adding cost and time. Green roofs are great in theory however long term if or rather when something does go wrong it is a real pain to work on. Furthermore small solar is best when used close to the point of use which I am assuming will be in the small house and should you later on decide to build a larger house and expand your solar you can then repurpose the small house into a transformer and battery shelter. My two cents take what you will.

When i want to buy ground in Catalonië for example, and there is a old house or tiny old house, can you demolish it and built a bigger house, and also on a other place on the land?Or are you only allowed to re-built the old house only without making it bigger and on the same place? And are you also allowed to built a fence around your property, like a small fence? Are you also allowed to live there or is there a amount of time you allowed to stay there, mayby you beef special papers to live there or how are these rules?
@SmithsdaleFarm
@SmithsdaleFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mari. Thanks for all the questions. We are not really able to give any legal advice-we’d suggest talking to professionals for that, and it seems that the rules and regulations can differ from village to village 😅 It seems to depend on the categorisation of land, and where it is located. We always advise that it’s best to speak to the local Ayuntamiento about any piece of land you’re considering buying. They will tell you what is/isn’t possible on that land. To live full time, you would need a habitation license. Some property will already have it. Some you might be able to apply. Some would never be granted. So it’s best to ask the Ayuntamiento (town hall). Good luck for your search! 💚
