There are observable patterns in nature and that's true for wildlife photo editing too. We can learn to identify them and build up images that take advantage of them.
In this video I want to step back from the detail and ins-and-outs of specific software, get the lay of the land and figure out what's the same in wildlife or nature images and try to exploit those similarities to find efficiencies in post processing.
Structured workflows can really help to streamline processing but also serve to remind us when we forget some of the steps! Developing a logical way of working is challenging but interesting too.

Hi Quentin, thanks for watching :) It's just a theory and observation on my part. One of the things I love about photography is that there is so much to explore. I've always been attracted to an idealist philosophy/metaphysics. Photography and the perception of the world in two dimensions feeds that interest very well. I've actually written most of a book but stopped work on it because I felt it was quite 'out there'. Maybe that's something I should finish, even if it's just for me. I've thought about courses too but I am a little reluctant because there are so many on offer already and also I don't want it to be tied technically to a piece of software. What sort of course would you be interested in?

A great video by Will. I found his Wildlife Toolkit about a month ago, bought it........and it has proved to be my best purchase ever. It leads you through a logical and consistent workflow resulting in your processing always moving forward. To have a reliable way of getting consistent results is super cool, and this means that when you take a week or two off from editing you don't have to struggle to remember the order of efficient processing. Well done Will and Thank you.

Thanks Will. ALSO Never overlook the drama of black and white. Yes wildlife is colour but a close up of a lion or zebra or any animal or bird can actually look better in black and white. When you take a shot, you need to think of why you are taking it. For most of us, it will be a pure record shot - this is what I saw on my trip. So you need to think of whether you include the subjects environment or not. A skinny lion close up doesn’t tell us much, but a skinny lion in a parched landscape tells much more. But not all shots need to be”record” shots. Some can be deliberately artistic, eg a mist covered lake with a swan. You need to think of that before you press the shutter button. Sometimes it is good to look at your basic shot before you start editing, would a cropped shot or a 16 x 9 work better. Try converting it to black and white and the result may surprise you. In photography, you are the artist, and not everything works within a standard workflow. Sorry I can’t buy your Lightroom packages. I have given up on Lightroom since they want to charge monthly. I don’t take enough photos to justify the cost. I now use ON1 Photo Raw 2021 which I didn’t like at first but now find it to be a superb bit of editing software. Glad you are back on KZfaq!! Regards Ray

When one is shooting landscapes it is easy to stand there and contemplate how it is going to be processed and the look one wants to create. However, when in the moment, shooting wildlife, the excitement of getting the shoot and interacting with the subject often push all thoughts of the end goal out of mind. Your idea of treating the capture as part of the processing and resisting the temptation to push a photo in a direction contrary to its capture are great reminders that I am going to try to put top of mind whenever I'm out in the field. Thanks for putting this video together.
@WillGoodlet
@WillGoodlet 3 жыл бұрын
You mean you don't get that heart-racing excitement in front of landscapes! ;) I've always found landscapes really hard. The light changes so fast! Hard on the body too. But you are right, it's never easy to keep an end goal in mind in the thick of it. Best we can do is try. Thanks for watching and commenting Glenn.

@@WillGoodlet Good point. I think that for me the term that comes to mind when I think landscapes is frustration. Hike to a location, find a great composition, wait for 2 hours for golden hour, and then it doesn't happen. Or conversely, as you point out, head out and find a great location with great light that disappears by the time you get set up. Landscape photographers deserve credit for being able to do that day after day. That said, every photography genre has its own challenges. The trick is to find the genre that motivates rather than frustrates.

Hi Will, another great video 👍🏽 Would you adjust exposure before doing any other edits? I'm new to post processing, but enjoying the challenge. Thanks for sharing Mate 📸👍🏽
@WillGoodlet
@WillGoodlet Жыл бұрын
Yes, but the fist step is getting exposure right in camera (to match your intention and maximise opportunities in post) and then correct in post. I got the idea from video processing where it's crucial. It applies very well to photography.
@WillGoodlet
@WillGoodlet Жыл бұрын
You could consider a crop first - as this will potentially remove areas of exposure that are irrelevant to the composition.
@WillGoodlet
@WillGoodlet Жыл бұрын

@leehanley71
@leehanley71 Жыл бұрын
@@WillGoodlet As in exposure compensation?
@WillGoodlet
@WillGoodlet Жыл бұрын
@@leehanley71 Sorry not sure what your question is. There are two exposure decisions when capturing a shot in camera. (1) Where you are not sure what you are going to do with the image later - so you want to capture the best base image. You would typically expose this image to the right while ensuring that there is no highlight clipping. If the subject is suitable, you may capture more than one image in order to encapsulate the entire dynamic range of the scene (for example a high contrast landscape). (2) You know exactly what you are going to do with the image. In this case you expose to match the vision you have in mind. For example, a backlit Lion on a hill with the red sunset behind - captured as a silhouette. The reason to expose this way in camera is twofold. Less work later and less need to use extreme settings in camera (e.g. High ISO). Exposure compensation is more of a tool to adjust the metering of the camera either above or below a camera metered standard exposure of the scene. You can compensate by dialling in your own settings, or use exposure compensation to adjust the exposure above or below the standard camera metered exposure by 1 or 2 stops. One example of where you might choose to use exposure compensation is to ensure that the camera meter is not fooled into under-exposing a bird set against a bright sky. A camera, left to its own devices will make the bird appear too dark. You would compensate for this behaviour by dialling in two or three stops of compensation to make the entire image brighter in this case. It can be done manually or with a compensation setting in camera - up to you. When the correctly exposed image is brought into your editing suite, it will be a much better base file and hence easier to process. You may find, for example, in the case of the silhoutte above, that you have no need to edit anything. This would be ideal as you will have captured the required shot in camera and need not waste time making it prettier! There is a subset of photographers who enjoy this challenge (Straight out of camera SOOC - e.g some number of Fuji shooters). When the image comes into the editing suite, the first correction, in my mind, should be to exposure - to match your intention for the shot. Because manipulations of colour, tint, WB will all change to a different look as soon as you touch exposure. Better to get exposure and contrast bedded down first and then adjust colours. Just saves time and is more efficient than chasing ones tail in circles. Hope this essay is useful! Hope I don't come off too up my own backside ;)

Thinking photographer; you're a rare thing Will. If you feel the inclination, I'd be interested to see how you handle jet black subjects. This is an area where I constantly struggle to get an acceptable overall exposure and a good looking final edit.

@@WillGoodlet Just before the covid crazy I was in Alaska struggling to photograph a black wolf. Over the last 24 months I've struggled to photograph black domestic dogs in Australia and get good exposures. Black birds seem a little easier, perhaps due to how reflective their plumage is, but still harder to get a good exposure than any other colour.
