Obi chopped his left arm off after dislocating his knee. He got it replaced by a cybernetic after being picked up by Death Watch.

I can understand the critic in a Jedi fighting kind of way. In "A New Hope", Obi-Wan cuts the weapon-wielding forearm of a hostile character. This kind of action would be known as "Cho Sun" which is absolutely acceptable for a Jedi to do in a way to disarm (no pun intended) a hostile opponent. This could be considered a prefered move compared to cutting the entire arm at the shoulder. It is controlled and immediataly rendered the guy mostly harmless (Again, no pun intended). Decapitation is called "Sai Cha" and although you cannot deny its efficiency in ending a fight quickly. This is a move that is not often seen made by jedi. Though, the movies have shown otherwise in the past, with Yoda practicing Sai Cha on two clone troopers on Kashyyyk, Mace Windu on Jango Fett (even worse, after he disarmed him) on Geonosis and even Obi-Wan again in The Phantom Menace when he did a Sai Tok cut on Darth Maul, cutting him in half at the waist. In conclusion, even though it is not the first areas where a Jedi would choose to cut, they have shown to do it nonetheless, plus in the Kenobi series, the Jedi is basically no more and the situation requires for more... swift brutality so I don't think we can really blame Obi-Wan for his on-the-moment decisions :P

Don't think any of those were a beheading in front of a child. Now if he told her to close her eyes or look away first I think this would be perfectly fine, but she's just watching him remove people's heads.

I think they were trying to emphasize the fact that Obi-Wan was weak due to all those years without training, and so he couldn't handle his lightsaber, and I get that, but they could've done that without turning his lightsaber into a foam stick. The Mandalorian/Book of Boba Fett got it right by making the Darksaber "heavy" in the hands of someone who's not attuned, why not do the same here?

The audience for Kenobi was likely skewed more towards younger viewers, so... beheading and delimbing were probably frowned upon. Plus, it still got the point across for the kids watching. For adults looking for something more graphic and gratifying, yeah, this is better.

It wasn't a lack of talent. It was an attempt to keep the violence family friendly. There's a reason why the only movies that featured Jedis heavily had them fighting droids.

@@bobson3014 it's also piss-poor management, the "kiddie mode" for star wars aside. There are many effects shots or just normal filmed shots that look cheap, or incomplete. Hence why this artist adding little details, like a hologram here, or a poster there, a change in the skybox to have planets instead of clouds is those little things that go a long way. So not lack of talent, but probably burn-out or lack of care or more likely, time crunch.

Not the VFX people, the directors and Disney trying to make a lightsaber pg-13 compliant when it’s effectively a plasma chainsaw (replace every SW “laser” use with plasma and their tech makes a LOT more sense when viewed).

They don't struggle. They just don't do it cuz it's apparently too violent for them. They won't have the sabers work this way in the games.

There's tonnes of reasons why FX from big studios turn out that way. Them not being able to do it better is pretty much never the reason. First and foremost, it's time and budget constraints and then also, as other people have mentioned; an attempt to make it more family friendly

You do know that the reason the lightsabers bounce in the shows is that they use actual props that do bounce irl after a strike in all of the scenes and Disney just didn't care to fix those shots in post? It's not about them not wanting lightsabers to cut people. They just didn't give a crap and decided to save up on time and money they would have to spend fixing the bouncy lightsabers, as the enbodiment of greed that Disney is.

It's not Leia that's my issue it's that Obi Wan usually didn't go that hardcore. He brushed with the darkside when he cut Maul in half but after that the next time he saw him he was gentle and consoling with him. He was a civilized warrior.

The show made him out of practice, a killing blow is far better to be sure the guards don't get up or raise an alarm and the best way to be sure is to take the head. Otherwise, they could survive like Reva did, twice. Oof, this show needs work.

Cutting a hand off isn't killing a person, neither Evazan nor Ponda Baba died in that encounter. You live to fight another day but you gotta lose a hand so you can't cause harm to people. This should be closer to the Obi Wan who takes your hand as a warning. He never kills anybody on the Death Star, going out of his way to use mind tricks to get around. The Obi Wan who greeted Maul as an old friend. Stormtroopers are wearing armor for protection, same as Vader. Everybody seems to overlook that sabers both dismembered and bounced off armor in the OG.

There's nothing "barbaric" or "uncivilized" about a "bouncing bat censored kill" AT ALL in ANY way in the slightest, it's just nonsense censorable that doesn't accurately depict how lightsaber actually act. It mainly has to do with censorship on if Disney is ok with showing people get cut in half with lazer swords as that would be "too graphic" for them despite the fact it happens ALL the time in Star Wars before Disney even had it. People getting cut in half and limbs getting cut off happens ALL the time in Star Wars during the prequel movies so it shouldn't be a problem at all now. Hell, even Finn stabbed someone through the chest with a lightsaber in Force Awakens and there was some other brutal kills and injuries in that movie like Han getting stabbed and people getting blown and shot to death with blaster bolts so it shouldn't be difficult at all to do.

@@Uchidan pretty sure Vader's armor has cortosis in it, while this isn't explicitly stated right out in the film. Are you going to go with the idea that Vader's custom armor is on par with the cookie-cutter Stormtrooper loadout? While both are plastoids and composites, the Stormtroopers was a much more diluted version of plastoid. Look how the lightsaber trashes all the electronic equipment in that same film, and even cuts open the locks on the AT-AT allowing Luke to toss in a grenade.

@@Uchidan I believe this isn't so much a *hit* against lightsabers as it is showcasing the limitations of VFX back in the day, which is why even in RotJ you'll notice Luke on Jabba's barge just sort of bashing things. Because in the prequels there isn't as much of this at all, yet note the lightsabers after the Disney acquisition.

lol he 100% would if the child's life is in danger, killing people in front of child doesn't mean anything if their life is in danger at the moment. They would get over it and Obi-wan has taught anakin to use lightsabers ever since he was a child. This isn't an issue at all as Jedi are pragmatic people who put the greater good above all.
