Thought it might be nice to see a little bit of story play out between ROGUE ONE and A NEW HOPE rather than attempt to bridge the two films with a logistics lesson on how the Tantive IV gets from point A to B. The way this plays out, it makes Luke the unlikely hero - a little bit awkward and hopeless - it also nicely foreshadows The Empire's growing chokehold on the Galaxy.
OKAY WOW so after uploading this, I found a supercut combining Rogue One and ANH had been done with these deleted scenes by Mecha Salesman and we even have a bit of the SAME MUSIC PLACEMENT on the Biggs/Luke scene. I know it's gonna make me sound like I'm trying to cover for myself really badly, but I first cut this video together in March 2019 and just now got around to uploading it, so our choices, as similar as they are, are totally coincidental. I had never seen their video until tonight. I'm completely shooketh over it, haha.

let’s talk about why i chose to place the sequences out of order, as so many of you continue to bring this up: as an editor, i use whatever footage works to tell the story in the best way. it is an unsacred, binary process - it either works, or it doesn’t. now, most footage doesn’t carry this much baggage, but every inch of STAR WARS’ celluloid seems to be religiously protected and defined by the fanbase. many of you know exactly where this footage was intended to go in the film’s timeline, and so do i. this is not usually the case when you’re putting together a piece of media. if you’d never seen this footage before, you wouldn’t know where it was supposed to go. so, i chose to ignore the “intended” order, and told a new little story. it would make no sense for me to hop back and forth between the stories when my intention is to create a short film of sorts that bridges the gap between two films - so i made this sequence have a new meaning by giving luke an introductory “false alarm” moment. here’s this guy, always looking up at the sky, hoping to catch a conflict, and his friends are like “not again.” the boy who cries wolf. it implies he’s ALWAYS doing this. and then he does it again, but this time, it means something. now i have the perfect opportunity to move cleanly into A NEW HOPE without breaking into the film’s later structure. it’s short, sweet, and complete. tell me i’m “wrong” all you want 😂

I mean, they were close together anyway so to flip back and forth would have been awkward and unnecessary. For George to film them in a single shot is not surprising for him to do here. This is also done lots in movies over the following decades. You need to watch more movies clearly. It was only more-so back then and beforehand because of how expensive things were for cheap budgets. It made sense to use less cameras if needed. TV shows even started off this way. As time went on the singular camera was used less for more of the multi-camera look.

If that deleted scene proves anything, it's that the politics of Star Wars can actually be super interesting if portrayed well. The way everything is described here is super great and compelling. The way the war is being described is super ominous. While I get why that deleted scene was cut, I really love it. It gives more context to Luke and his place in Star Wars before he got involved. That, and again, it also makes the politics of Star Wars super interesting, which doesn't happen a lot. It's also neat how much we find out about Biggs from just one scene. So, here's the real reason why these scenes were deleted: George Lucas wanted to start the movie with C-3PO and R2-D2 from the beginning. He talked about how he wanted them to be the POV characters that the audience sees the movie through. Problem was, the producers disagreed, and thought this wouldn't work, and so Lucas filmed these scenes to introduce Luke before we officially meet him at the sandcrawler. But when it came to editing the movie, pretty much everyone agreed this didn't quite work either, considering it has to intercut with the action scene going on in space, and therefore, it feels like you're watching two different movies begin (at least I assume that's the reason it didn't work). So, Lucas' original wish to begin the movie with droids eventually came true

Exactly why Marcia Lucas cut the scene as the final cut editor of the film. By the time she took over as lead editor it was too late for any reshoots and placing this scene or a similar trip to Tosche Station or Anchorhead further into the film were dashed, so it it was completely cut, but left in the radio broadcast and novel, which why so many people are familiar with it even though it was never in the film

I get why the scenes of Luke on Tatooine were cut and I agee with the decision, but they would have been great for worldbuilding: in a short time and just a few sentences, we get to learn about what the citizens of Tatooine think of themselves, their home, the empire and the rebellion. Their talk about the academy, being drafted and what the empire aspires to do and has been doing so far (nationalization of commerce, the possibility of farmers like Owen losing their land, etc.). It really paints a clearer picture of the galactic conflict and everybody's interests. The empire becomes even more of an evil, totalitarian regime and the rebellion that much more heroic and good. Does anybody else feel the same way? Not that the finished film did a bad jobe or anything, I just appreciate the added worldbuilding these scenes would have provided.

This is a great scene! I think it was probably a good choice to cut for the original theatrical release because the film is quite long if you look at it through 1977 lenses. But as superfans now, it's amazing to have it! I love that Luke is actually a little bit more motivated deeper causes. Before, it was the cliched motivation of "Save the princess" and "get off this rock". In the original cut, he makes only cursory mentions of the empire, but certainly no understanding of what is happening and WHY there is a rebellion. To see him actually understanding and more concerned about the empire and their activities gives him a much greater depth. Thank you very much for this upload!

The existence of this scene has been known to long time fans of Star Wars for decades, and it's interesting how it establishes the world the characters exist in for the story. But it has always struck me how the "Academy" Luke and Biggs talks about is not a military one, but apparently some sort of merchant marine type of organization, especially given the way Biggs is dressed and the way he talks about not wanting to wait until the Empire drafts him into service. But the talk of how the Empire is nationalizing everything makes it clear that everything, from farms on Tatooine to the academy won't stay independent for very much longer, which ties in nicely to the later scene on the Death Star with Tarkin telling everyone there that the Senate has been dissolved permanently.

Except that wasn't in Star Wars. What was in this deleted scene originally was very different and looked like a placeholder. What is here appears to be new and is quite well done. I like it a lot and it actually feels like what you could see from the planet's surface.

Wow ! This delelted scene is very interresting ! The part when Luke looks up with his binocular seeing the vessels far in the sky is beautiful and add so much realism ! It gives credit to the atmosphere of a developped galactical civilization. On another hand, I understand why it was deleted. Way too long and it doesn't fit with Luke's vision of the empire in the story, despite his naivety. It would have been interresting to see a Luke neutral then turning against the empire but it could have been a risk of inconsistency in such a character meant to embody the innocence of the good against the evil at the beginning of this trilogy.

First, and most important: I have NEVER seen those deleted segments before, and it was really cool seeing them now, so THANKS! Second: Really spectacularly well edited, both picture and music. Third, and last: No matter how awesome, there's no denying the absolute gut punch impact of the original opening of Star Wars (IV), so while this is a really cool experiment, and the scene itself is interesting and well acted, it just doesn't fit anywhere.

There’s something SO much more sinister, mysterious and cool about seeing the Star Destroyer just *pop* into existence from hyperspace from the POV of someone on the ground. Ships are always filmed so close in star wars media; I feel like directors (or producers) never have the gall to back things up a bit and not show their fancy ships in super-detail, but it hits so much harder like this

new comment pin to celebrate A HALF MILLION VIEWS WHOA first off, thank you all for being so welcoming of this little edit of mine. i’m so glad you all like it and are supporting it so warmly. i’d like to think that this sort of reminds us all of what this little movie was before it became what we know today. this cut makes me feel like STAR WARS is special again. here are some quick things about the video: i had a pinned comment that explained why i deliberately chose to flip the order of the clips, but it still seems to bother folks. so, think if it this way - if you were making a little sci-fi movie in the 70s, and you decided to recontextualize a clip by flipping its intended order, nobody would know. we only know because we’ve become so attached to the lore. so, let this one go, and just enjoy the new narrative. to me, it makes luke look like he’s always got his eyes on the sky, and folks are a bit sick of his constant dreaming and thirst for adventure. it doesn’t matter if he really saw a battle or not - in my head, for this particular cut, he didn’t. in my head, biggs is right - it’s just a tanker refueling or something like that. this leads me to my next point - the falcon shot. i made that one in blender and after effects, and i figured it just made a cool transition shot. i have no idea if han or chewie are canonically arriving at that point or not, and i don’t care 😂 the skyward shot of the destroyer chasing the blockade runner was something i whipped up in after effects. i’m really proud of the weight that shot has. i chose not to do a “binocular” shot because i didn’t want to give away the big reveal of the opening shot. OH. and i almost started with the vader hallway sequence. almost. but you can’t start with the coolest dang thing in the one movie and expect folks to stick around to see what i did with everything else in a seven or eight minute video, so… you all know what's in these movies already, haha. also, i’m not a film restoration specialist, i’m a professional editor - these are two different jobs and i don’t know what tools to use for restoration. instead of telling me that i should have restored the clips, please direct me to some resources so that i can learn how. finally, now that i have A WHOLE TRUCKLOAD OF FOLLOWERS NOW, wow, uh… what should i make next? doesn’t have to be star wars.

Because its long and unnecessary. It completely messes up the pacing of a new hope. And story wise doesn't make too much sense either, luke never mentions any of this again to anyone even though he definitely would of told kenobi or uncle Owen.

Some people don't enjoy exposition and space politics. Personally I do, and would've loved to have the scene in the film. The loss to flow or pacing is negligible compared to the massive increase in the setting, background info, understanding of what's going on, and so on. To say that it was "saved" in editing is to misunderstand that some people like different things. For instance, to me the best part of the prequels are the politics. Some people hate them. It's easy to see George Lucas's hand here with the mention of politics and finances and so on. Admittedly, if the scene was included I'm sure lots of people would've been bored by it, but just as many would've loved it.

I didn't realize you'd changed the order, but I HAVE seen more or less these scenes on KZfaq before somewhere. They're pretty good. When SW came out on VHS I never knew why I remembered Biggs when none of this was there. Of course it was because some of this was in the Marvel comics adaptation and maybe the novelization. Cool to use it here to connect the two stories a little more tightly. Nice work.
