The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a 2017 action-adventure game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch and Wii U consoles. The game is a part of The Legend of Zelda series and is set at the end of its timeline. The player controls an amnesiac Link, who awakens from a hundred-year slumber and is tasked with saving Princess Zelda and preventing Calamity Ganon from destroying the world. Similar to the original 1986 Legend of Zelda, players are given minimal instruction and can explore the open world freely. Released on March 3, 2017, Breath of the Wild was a launch game for the Nintendo Switch and the final Nintendo-published game for the Wii U. Two waves of downloadable content were released in 2017 via an expansion pass. Breath of the Wild received universal acclaim. It won several Game of the Year awards and has since been cited as one of the greatest video games of all time. Breath of the Wild is also the top selling game in the series and one of the best-selling video games of all time, selling more than 30 million copies by 2022. A spin-off, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, was released in 2020; a sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, is scheduled for 2023.

I've watched blind playthroughs of this game without people even reading and quit after a few episodes for how bad they was doing at the game. I'm glad you both playing blind and take the time to read to better learn the mechanics.

With regard to what Zelda game to play next: There are 2 categories of Zelda game: 2D/Top Down and 3rd person camera (which I will call “3D”). The two categories use the same core gameplay loop, but due to the technology used the execution and feel are very different. Since you started with BotW you might want another 3D. Chronologically the 3D games are: Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, & Skyward Sword. Ocarina of Time was the first 3D Zelda game. It’s UI is clunky compared to modern games, but it’s a classic that many would argue is the best Zelda game. It’s definitely the longest of the 3D Zelda games with the possible exception of BotW. If you want a long game that brings you to Zelda’s roots this is your game. (Play on anything Nintendo) Majora’s Mask is a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time. Do not recommend until after playing OoT. Wind Waker is probably closest to BotW in the size of the world and free exploration, however the world is a giant archipelago so you explore by sailing from island to island. Many islands are small and contain a puzzle that might remind you of BotW’s shrines. I recommend if you want to double down on the spontaneous exploration component of BotW. (Play on NGC & Wii U) Twilight Princess is similar to Ocarina of Time but with a lot better UI and not as long. It would be a good game to play if you want to get the feel of a core Zelda game but either want a more refined UI or just don’t want as long a game as OoT. (Play on NGC, Wii, & Wii U) Skyward Sword is the most recent Zelda game before BotW. It feels like a Zelda sampler dish that gives a lot of what made every previous Zelda games great but in small portions. The world is small and you will backtrack several times. I can’t say it’s a bad game, but neither is it my favorite. Play if you want a newer game on the Switch or if you want to play backwards chronologically. (Play on Wii U & Switch) Any Zelda game I did not mention is a 2D/Top Down game. If you want to try one of those I recommend: Link to the Past (for a LONG game), Minish Cap (for fun and cheerful, but short), or Link's Awakening (mid sized, on Switch). Most other 2D/Top Down games are good as well. There is a lot less variation in the style and gameplay in the 2D/Top Down games. I do NOT recommend: The Legend of Zelda (difficulty, bad first choice), Zelda II (difficulty, bad UI, odd gameplay), Phantom Hourglass (technically a direct sequel to Wind Waker, but honestly I just don’t like it), or Spirit Tracks (technically a sequel to Phantom Hourglass, but honestly I just don’t think magic trains fit the medieval setting of every other Zelda game).

Ocarina then majoras would be amazing! So rare to have a truly blind playthrough of these I will specify too, not the 3rd versions. Maybe the switch or wiiu emulator? It would be a joy. But anything you choose will be a joy :)

Considering that BotW has giant computerized beasts and a tablet then trains are nothing in comparison. Also I'd say Hyrule is usually in an age closer to the Renaissance than the middle ages.

Ryan said he is veeerry interested in older Zelda Games! I think I have material to watch for the next 20 years. 😀 Keep on going with this! I'm sure, that with this 100% Blind format and keeping it 100% blind during the letsplays, is gonna give you a lot of success, because people are loving this kind of content!

I feel like not reminding her about the shrine was a bit much she already knew about it she just couldn't remember I love a blind playthrough but at some point the limited things you can do before even starting the tutorial is kind of tedious to watch especially when one of you is deliberately holding them back from starting the game. Don't get me wrong I'm loving the exploration of the game but it's not even a lack of paying attention it's just been a month and unlike Ryan she can't check the vods to see what she forgot. Even the game that's about exploring directly points you to the shrine because it wants you to have tools to explore with.

While I agree with this, the menus in the game (and the quest log) do a great job of helping you pick up where you left off, no matter how long the gap has been. So I think a true blind playthrough would involve an albeit frustratingly convoluted journey which concludes in reminding Meg to keep checking her quest log

Ocarina is the OG 3D Zelda so I'd start there. My favourite's Majora, but it's a direct sequel to Ocarina (kind of like Tears of the Kingdom is to this game) so if you were going for Majora I'd still start with Ocarina.
@anonymousperson015
@anonymousperson015 Жыл бұрын
I will add I also strongly suspect Ryan in particular would massively enjoy many aspects of Majora. Watching the way you approach BOTW, discussing & analysing mechanics & paying such close attention to all the workings of NPCs, interleaving of quests, &c., I really think the unique & innovative world-building of Majora would be your jam. With TOTK being built on BOTW, there's an anticipation of Nintendo having much more scope for innovation & world-building, given the technological foundation already exists. That was definitelly true of Majora, building on OOT's existing engine: the narrative premise of Majora is something I've never seen done in any game since.

The first Zelda game I played was The Legend of Zelda. Can't say what year it was, but it was before the Gameboy launched in Europe. I bought a 3DS for the Ocarina of Time 3D remake and the music CD. Majora's Mask 3D is probably the only game I can remember where there was a step before pre-ordering: sign a petition to tell the developer (to paraphrase) "remake the game, I want to buy it". Side-note: I had played them before, but hadn't owned either on the N64. I would imagine my number of hours playing Link's Awakening on the Gameboy eventually overtook Tetris. I bought a Switch OLED for the Metroid Dread release, although my basket included several games including BOTW. Given the timelines of the game series, and that it is "the best game of all time" (depending on who the direct quote is from, you can prepend that with "is still", "will always be", or "is one of"), I would go with Ocarina of Time next with one caveat: the N64 controller is special. While Mario 64 and Goldeneye are playable on PC/Xbox style controllers, the controls are awkward, and I imagine the same might be true for Ocarina of Time on a switch controller.

It's funny how Meg didn't even acknowledge the existence of that bridge 🤣 With regards to the next Zelda game to play, I'd say if you're sticking with the 3D route, definitely Ocarina of Time. I say that because it was the first 3D Zelda game that pioneered a lot of the mechanics in the franchise. So starting from OoT, you can continue from there and see the evolution of all the game mechanics. Majora's Mask is virtually a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time and is my personal favorite Zelda game, but I absolutely do not recommend it as your next game. There are things about it that make it more rewarding if you play OoT first. Plus there are other reasons that make it not the best entry in the series for someone just getting into the franchise. And since it's my favorite in the series, I kinda want to make sure you get the best impression possible. :V If you're worried about choosing a game from a lore perspective, I'd say don't linger on that thought too much simply because the lore of each game is only loosely connected. You wouldn't be missing out on anything by jumping around throughout the series. I will say one thing though: Whenever you complete a Zelda game, I think it would be fun for you to come back to BotW and look over the map of Hyrule and see if anything interesting stands out to you.

I know people usually get a lot of flak for saying this because the gameplay itself isn't great, but I suggest playing Skyward Sword first because it takes place first in the timeline. It seems you're a bit of a lore nerd (rightfully so) and it kinda explains the whole premise of every game.

Honestly Ive watched a few Blind Playthroughs. And the think that trips most people up is that Amount of things you CAN do in the game. That most games do not let you. But the Game its self Does not tell you it. You gotta figure it out thorugh trial and error.
