Mike's budget challenges are my favorite content, so I'm glad to see him inspiring other people to take the challenges on and see how creative they can get with the restraints. I hope you do a few more in the future, the ones I've already watched were great!

I'm always blown away by how much you can buy for just £1 in th UK. Sure, I know from watching Shrimp's challenges that the cost of other things, such as housing, can be very high, which obviously balances things out in the end, but the thought of me being able to buy all that for between 13 and 14 swedish kronor is just crazy. I'm fully aware it's a flawed comparison, but I have the same reaction of total amazement every time I see this happen. 😄

It's always surprising to see what's "affordable" and what's "expensive" in other countries! I was surprised when I found out how expensive food could be in the US, and then that tax gets added on at the END of the shop! Housing here is extremely expensive though, you're right, it balances out in the end

When I moved to Sweden our grocery bills doubled. I follow Portionen under tian but all staples here (bread, milk, eggs, rice, fresh vegetables etc) are more than double the UK prices. In a way though it makes me feel a bit happier that farmers and food producers in Sweden actually get paid a fair price for things such as milk and eggs unlike in the UK where supermarkets squeeze their margins aggressively.

I was very impressed by your creativity here. You didn't just have the food the way it came but instead thought of very clever ways to turn what you had into something else which I found very interesting to watch. Thanks for the effort that you put into doing this. Am sure the guy from Atomic Shrimp would be proud! :)

Thanks so much! I do think using the spaghetti hoops as they were was a bit boring to start with but as the day progressed and the coffee kicked in I was able to think outside of the box a bit more. Looking forward to trying a similar challenge soon :)

This would be hugely difficult in America, partly because food is more expensive(not considerably but enough) than the Uk although I suspect with Brexit + Inflation + the weaker pound maybe the Uk is closer to the Us these days, but also there are literally so few non bulk options for people to buy. Ie. In most grocery stores, outside of bodega-type places in the bigger cities.
@harrywalbyoff2
@harrywalbyoff2 Жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right! I saw a video recently showing how much more American groceries are than in the UK. But yep, Brexit, war, and everything driving inflation these days has made a challenge like this far more difficult than it would have been just two years ago, and wages haven't caught up to that yet.

Pretty good going and inventive use of your ingredients! Only in US, UK and other large countries could you get all that for a quid. No chance of that where I live (Netherlands), we get ripped off majorly. This is why I roll me eyes when people complain about cost of living in UK because if you put your mind to it you can eat very cheaply (and rents and energy are high everywhere, not just in UK!).
@harrywalbyoff2
@harrywalbyoff2 Жыл бұрын
It's much easier if you can bulk buy, but doing this kind of thing every day would definitely impact your wellbeing long term!
@logothaironsides2942

Well done on the challenge. But I have to say the 'beef' in the pasty looked very grey, so grey I wondered if it had gone off. Anyway you survived to post the video so that's a relief. @harrywalbyoff2
@harrywalbyoff2 Жыл бұрын
I used to shop at a market in university, they even gave student discounts! But they're often a bit on the expensive side for a challenge like this
@madcommodore
@madcommodore 11 ай бұрын
People don't buy 1 days worth of shopping, should really be weekly or fortnightly budget (people get benefits 2x a month after all) and most wages are paid monthly. I appreciate this makes videos longer and more challenging to do but it's more realistic in the real world, £1 a day x7 etc minimum.
@harrywalbyoff2
@harrywalbyoff2 11 ай бұрын
It's true that this isn't realistic, but it was never meant to be, it's just a problem solving exercise. Like you say, doing it this way is just a way to make it more challenging. I wouldn't want anyone to think I'm suggesting that people live like this. Anyway, thank you for watching and leaving a comment :)
@madcommodore
@madcommodore 11 ай бұрын
@@harrywalbyoff2 It's not that, it's more to do with the fact you would buy at least 1 weeks worth of dinner at a time, people on benefits get 2 weeks worth of payments at a time and most employees paid once a month. Just makes it artificially more difficult splitting it into 1 day = £1 etc I think, unless you are asking for money on the streets it's not how most people on a budget shop.

@harrywalbyoff2

Definitely too many carbs, but that's the thing with this kind of challenge, you have to make a lot of sacrifices! £3 for 3 days for example would make it easier to introduce variety for sure, so might try something like that soon :) thanks for the comment!
