I find myself listening to music at lower SPL than before than I did when I was a lot younger. I feel I can hear more detail because of it, as long as the ambient noise floor is lower… :-)

This would be a combination of listening experience along with the higher resolution of today's electronics. Just a 5 dB lowering of the noise floor will increase resolution by 10% in most small rooms. Resolution can be improved dramatically with just small decreases in the noise floor. When you lower the noise floor, you hear more music definition but you also hear how much the room is contributing to what you hear.

With my 7.4.4 system, a dedicated 4k set up, when I set it all up, I watched a couple movies and listened to some music, it sounded like crap, I then did some room treatment, sound absorbing panels, ran ypao again, I couldn't believe the difference it all made, the only thing I've not done yet is defusing, that's my next step, and after watching this I'm on the right track, cheers Dennis. When I watch movies in a reclined position, with some LFE, I can feel certain low frequency go right through me, from head to toe vica versa, it's freaky sensation and I'm loving it.

Make sure you have your reverb times managed correctly throughout your room. Diffusion will make your room sound worse.

How do you decide once you have completely treated a room that you have “done enough “? RT60 measurements?

Frequency response with Rt-30/60 times.

So for those of not concerned with the bass due to cost/real estate, would you assist with the mids/highs?

There are two issues within any small room. We have low frequency pressure and middle and high frequency reflections. Treating low frequency issues correctly requires 12 - 16" of space on each wall surface area. Treating reflection issues can take from 2" - 6" with current technologies.

You say we need to treat the problems before diffusion? So, what problems are we talking about?

Modal issue treatment along with a reverberation time that is consistent throughout the room.

It is difficult to articulate the vast differences, improvement and overall presentation of the musical and theatrical experience in a treated vs. untreated room. The room is half of what you hear..without the meticulous attention to detail that one as knowledgeable and experienced as Dennis Foley to guide the process, you may never hear what your system is truly capable of.

I would say that the room is a 70% factor in low end sound quality and 50% for mids and highs.

I don't understand what you mean by "Rays" of energy. Please explain. In Physics rays deal with light , heat, or electromagnetic radiation, not sound. All sound are longitudinal waves (Compression Waves) Rays are Transverse Waves. Higher frequencies are more directional, but it is still a wave, not a "ray" Am I missing something?

I believe he uses the terms waves and rays as a metaphor for better visualization. It helps get the point across more effectively.

Yes, it is a visulaization tool. Think of middle and high frequency energy as rays of light energy. They are shorter in length, smaller in width and height than a low frequency pressure wave. Think of rays as energy that comes through your window and falls on the plants Think of low frequency energy as an ocean wave within your room crashing against the walls, floor, and ceiling. Rays and waves look and behave differently. They must be managed with seprate technologies.

@@AcousticFields Gotcha. I tend to be pretty literal. must be why I missed this as a visualization. Keep up the great videos!

"You're Only Going To Hear Half": Hyperbole [to put it politely!]. You're not going to hear twice as much music in a treated room. Not even in a hyperbolic chamber.

We are speaking about resolution. We are about quality not quantity.
