@@chieftainmk_11 Yeah. All our services, meaning i the aame form as military, like a duty to be done for the good of the society were sold off, privatised: air, rail, water, electricity, gas(?), telephones... We tore up tracks to "small" communities in the 60's, Dr. Beeching, privatised the rail, "to make it more affordable and better furnished", and we still subsidise passenger rail, we pay taxes that cover some rail usage and still pay for tickets, all the money goes to faceless shareholders, rather than into the government, for public good. If you steal a public good from the public it becomes neither public nor good. Everyone calls our right wing party, the Conservative Party, the Tories for good reason, it means thief or bandit in old Middle Irish Gaelic. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tories_(British_political_party) When Japan privatised their main lines it remained good due to the public's reliance on it, similar to the UK's Royal Mail, despite privatisation it's still essentially the same system, it's too essential to screw it up. Shame about the undergound mail railways, they were cool, and didn't block narrow city roads with huge lorries.

After seeing this I have mixed feelings about Amtrak, how my town went from a dozen passenger trains to the regularly late Cardinal, which would be better called the night owl as it arrives at 11 and 3 am ish (east and west bound respectively)
@geekchris1052 жыл бұрын
Amtrak has three main problems: 1. It was an "out" for private rail companies to be allowed to throw away non-profitable rail services 2. It, itself, is required to turn a profit 3. It must lease trackage from other rail companies in most locations Initially, Amtrak was only meant to run intercity trains, and in most case that is all that it has. The private rail companies were mandated to keep commuter service, but as rail requirements continue to laxen, they were able to drop those services as well.
