LIVE: #SENTENCING - A Dane County judge has denied #ChandlerHalderson’s request not to be present in the courtroom when his sentence for killing and dismembering his parents is handed down Thursday. The 23-year-old Eagle Scout was found guilty of the killing and dismemberment of his own parents, Bart and Krista Halderson.
Halderson was convicted on two counts each of first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse, hiding a corpse and falsifying information about a missing person. A first-degree intentional homicide conviction carries a mandatory life sentence. Judge Hyland will be left to decide if Halderson will ever be eligible for parole.
In Wisconsin, the mandatory sentence for a conviction of first-degree intentional homicide is life in prison. However, the judge has the discretion to impose a parole-eligible sentence after a mandatory period of confinement - that is 20 years. That decision must be made at sentencing.

I'm not a total fan of the death penalty but only because 99.9% of the executors do experience severe mental torture. It is not as easy as they thought. I've watched and read a lot on this topic and has only came across one Egyptian executor that loved his job and he had executed many in his career way more than US executors, he seemed like a psychopath anyways. I do however think that many murderers should be taken out of this world and not housed on taxpayers money. Unfortunately death row has become very expensive in the US, in my country they did away with it because of the reasons given above and our prisons are full of absolute monsters. Yes it doesn't bring the murder rate down, psychos are wired differently and they will always be around but I just feel monsters should not have the right to be on this earth.
@elizabethgrogan8553
@elizabethgrogan8553 2 жыл бұрын
@@litty4553 I totally agree with you. From the outside, looking in, it appears that the U.S. judicial system is utterly broken. The death penalty achieves nothing. It doesn't stop people from committing crimes. If anything, it encourages criminals to murder their victims to leave no living evidence. I'm always somewhat amused to see prisons called correctional centres. Yet, the average prison guard is not trained well. In my country, ex military are no longer permitted to apply to become prison guards because they see prisoners as the enemy. We also have a great training programme for guards. As a result, the recidivism rate has dropped significantly. Of course there are always those who can't be rehabilitated, and are a danger. We have a prison which houses them. Nothing is perfect but what we have seems to work well.

The prosecutors are amazing! The impact of Atty Brown’s statement was mind blowing. I absolutely love Judge Hylund! To be able to meet him one day would be an honor. Chandler is such a disrespectful punk. He had wonderful defense lawyers who sought to make sure his constitutional rights were protected and invoked, that he had a fair trial and fought hard for him to have the possibility of parole and he said that they weren’t fair to him and told him not to show emotion? How fair was it that he murdered and dismembered his wonderful parents? Inmates aren’t going to like that he came from a perfect family with a perfect life when they were robbed of those opportunities which aided in them making poor decisions in life. Chandler had the perfect opportunity to stand up and show emotion during his statement, but decided to ask if there were attorneys that would take him on. No remorse shown, no emotions....nothing!!!! I agree! It really hurt him to have to deny Bart’s mom’s plea for parole…he truly tried to restore the hope he’d just had to sever, attempting to help it evolve into the viable next best outcome….even as he did deny her specific plea for parole and crush that hope, he did also at the same time try effectively id hope, to grant her some peace of mind and relief in mentioning family reunification is not a lost hope and especially with psychiatric treatment, therapy, medication, etc. but he did as was his duty, protecting the interests of all involved at all times in the process. And in doing so, he exercised great compassion and dignity and grace, even speaking as I mentioned already on psychiatric care/treatment/healing and potential for reunifications within that shattered family. I cannot think of any mistake or disregard for feelings of others, even the defendant himself, during the entire course of this beyond difficult trial. A great egg, Judge Hyland! And there just sadly aren’t that many of those people out there these days!

Greetings from Finland! I've been watching this whole trial. We don't allow cameras in the courtroom here which is really weird. Here, the common man holds court hearings as secret society meetings. I admire American freedom of speech. I think this trial is a great example of how the court works. The prosecutor's final speech was unparalleled, no anger, no emotion, only justice. The defense did its best in a hopeless situation. Judge John Hyland is exemplary in his work. He calmly controlled the whole process with his charisma. I think that this case and its handling will be used for the training of lawyers in the future. The only one who could not have opened his mouth was the accused, whose name I don’t even want to mention.

Chandler had the chance to give some kind of remorse, but yet he ask for any attorney to handle his appeal and did not care about nothing else, but himself! What a jerk! He is a sociopath and a narcissist. I was hoping all of Bart and Krista Halderson's good neighbors and Mitch would have given an impact statement. Mitch and his fiancé (had a letter read) are probably still in shock and are not able to even face Chandler and I don't blame them one bit! I feel terrible for Chandler's younger lawyer. The defense lawyers are working with nothing. Yes, they look foolish a lot of the time, but they're working with nothing. But the older lawyer seems to pass off all the hard work onto the younger lawyer. While she sits there like a lump forcing her younger colleague to bear the brunt of the embarrassment of having to defend the fake rocket scientist all by herself. You just know damn well she does not want to stand up there and have to deliver these statements signifying nothing with absolutely no help from Chandler, who did more work trying to skip this hearing than he did during the entire trial that was held with his life on the line. Despite all of the snide comments directed at them for doing such a crappy job, the younger lawyer should hold her head high knowing she did the best damn job she could have under the circumstances. The annoyance from the defense lawyer while the prosecutor is speaking is nauseating. The crime is unbelievable. The judge’s words are perfect, “ The only time it would be appropriate to see him out of prison is in the burial that he denied his own parents.” And “ I do not have the level of empathy your grandmother has for you.” He is emotionless. His own brother’s wife is scared for her family if he gets out. Life without parole was fair.

Never have I seen someone as ignorant and in denial like this guy. Even in his last statement, there was no remorse being showed and accountability being taken. He now blames his lawyers. Nothing is his fault. This shows that it is unlikely that rehabilitation will work on him. I totally respect all statements and the final judgement from the judge. Also I understand both sides of arguments from defender's law and prosecutors. It is unlikely to change someone unless that person takes full responsibility and owning of his mistakes. I followed this case for a couple weeks. The judge was so polite and considerate to his court and others who were there since the first day. This was a difficult case for the defender's lawyers to change the outcome of this trial. The evidence both in substance and circumstances were well presented. They were facing a tough job to defend this trial. Both police and prosecutors have done a very thorough and profound job. Very effective. What is sad from this is that people who were in his life will never be the same like before this murders happened. My condolences to all who were affected by this.
