The Mets are seen as one long clown show. Have there been too many bad moments? Absolutely! But there have been beautiful, amazing moments and players as well. I applaud the Cohens for doing what the Wilpons could not or would not: Bringing to remembrance those amazing moments and retiring numbers of well beloved stars. Frank Cashen refused to resign him. He was afraid to trade him, knowing the backlash from the fans would have driven him out of town, so Cashen let him go for nothing. If Straw had been able to stay with the team, he could have been a Hall of Famer.

Love you straw so happy I've been a dodgers fan for 35 years now but growing up in nyc I still root for mets too and looking back was exciting when you went back to los angeles I was at your first game back at shea as a dodger but truth be told you belonged in queens and never should have left the mets but I'm so glad you are happy healthy and looking good

This was a great ceremony. Who knows how many more home runs he could have had. 400, possibly for the team. I am glad he recognized his team and other people. The stadium didn't look packed enough and seemed less enthusiastic. Too bad they lost the game after the ceremony, and I watched this because now the NY RANGERS were eliminated from the playoffs, and Darryl was at game 5 at the Garden. So I needed something good to watch. In the words of former WCW/WWE wrestler Bill Goldberg, "Who's next?" to have a number retired ceremony. Perhaps the kid himself Gary Carter. Who knows and how long before the next ceremony takes place. Congratulations to you, strawman.
