In this session, we cover the use of the different graduated mask shapes to achieve a neutral density effect in post-processing, plus lifting shadows, colour correction for sunrise and sunset, bringing contrast to a flat scene and more from the Capture One Live session earlier in the day.
Join us for live editing in Capture One - with your own images - Today, we're also going to specifically cover output settings for print. To participate, or for more info, head to: www.paulreiffe...
And don't forget, the discussion continues on our Behind The Scenes Facebook group: / paulreifferlive

Great instruction. the order in which you use the tools is extremely helpful along with the way you used the levels tool at the end. In what situations would you want to change the levels output while keeping the inputs as is? I'm enjoying these sessions immensely. Thank you.

So, in theory, if you wanted to *reduce* contrast, or shift the native mid-point (middle grey / 128) around in the image, you can use the top sliders to do that. In practice, it's rarely done... :-)

Yet again fantastic. So much information on what the individual adjustments do and how they interact with each other, thank you.

Great tutorial Paul. I have always looked at Levels as a blunt instrument compared to Curves but I now look at them differently, thanks!

Thanks Elliot - most of the tools in COP (and others) are completely logical, I think we just overcomplicate things sometimes!

Hi Paul, great explanation for levels. finally somebody explained it straight and clear. Can you, may be in future sessions, explain the histogram a bit more detailed? i think a lot of people (me included) dont understand it right. So, how is a perfect histogram supposed to look like? stay save and thanks for your excellent work.

Hi Gundula, So the short answer is there is no such thing as a "perfect" histogram - as it reflects what's in the image, and that could be an artistic choice. A low contrast image isn't "wrong", if that was the effect you were going for. Likewise, an intentional high-key shot would result in a histogram that's extremely heavy on the right - but still not incorrect. So, it's better to just learn what the histogram is telling you about the image (although, 9 times out of 10, we can already see that result with our eyes when we look at the picture!)

@@Paulreiffer Hi Paul, thanks for the answer. That was what I thought as well. Sometimes we find to many information in KZfaq, and not everything is right/ personal opinion...

I think Laurentiu was asking about the Methods dropdown on Clarity - Natural, Punch, Neutral, Classic
