Today is a special Milky Way edition of editing the night sky!
In this session, we begin with the considerations needed for getting the best result out of shooting the night sky - ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed, along with which takes priority for the cleanest image.
Working through three very different images, we explore how to counter the "glow" of sunset or the city lights, auto-masking, luma ranges and contrast/white balance adjustments to make the photograph stand out from the crowd. We finish with a tweak in levels and curves to produce a deep sky with brilliant stars.
Join us for live editing in Capture One - with your own images -
We recommend requesting the HD option from KZfaq for full 1080p screen captures.
To submit your image for a future session, head to www.paulreiffe... for more info.
And don't forget, the discussion continues on our Behind The Scenes Facebook group: / paulreifferlive

Perfect timing! Let's see if we can shift one or two future live sessions to allow for that time zone! ;-)

@@Paulreiffer It just gets even better! ....the Aurora Borealis shot has my lens XF10-24mm F/4.0 (Photo Pills btw gives this lens a spot star of 24.42 secs @ f/4 which is its widest so you're spot on with your exposure timings!) , anyhow I'm picking up so much stuff here Paul thanks very much! Particularly like your recommendation to analyse your lens at every turn.

I love your webinar and tips series. I am perennially late to every live session, so I am bound to post comments and questions here. The tutorials helped me improve my photos and how I approach editing with capture one. Some questions: could you had used the color editor to change the color of the sky (i.e. temperature) without affecting the overall image? To affect only the stars and make them pop more, what about using cloning the sky layer and set the luma range to select only elements that are in the highlights (245), then apply higher whites?

Hi Damian, So - colour editor on the sky with a gradient can be tricky - you can quickly end up with banding where the boundary between your desired colour change and the rest of the sky meet. On making stars pop, absolutely - a layer with only say 250 or above would also isolate the key stars too. :-)

Nice one. Would like to get more information about radius and sensitivity in the luma range mask tool.

Hi Paul, talking about lens profiles, I am just wondering why Capture One doesn't have lens profiles for Tamron 28-75mm which is an extremely popular lens or Samyang lenses....unless they are included in the upgrade to 20 which I still don't have yet.

That's disappointing, I was considering the 17-28 f2.8. Stick with my Batis 18mm I think.

Honestly, it'll come down to how many requests they get from actual Capture One users. While it may be a popular lens, if it's not used by a chunk of Capture One users, it won't be seen as a necessary priority (the two are very different things). Have you logged a request on support.captureone.com? It'll be through receipt of a lot of requests for that lens through the proper channels that they'll add it, if not done already :-)
