Living The Dream on Vancouver Island (King Crab Catch & Cook) #pacificnorthwest
King Crab, epic visibility, strange sea creatures and steamship antiques... What more could you ask for?
In this edit I team up with ‪@AquaticMonkey‬ and ‪@WatermanSurin‬ for two amazing days spent freediving and harvesting from the cold Pacific Ocean. We scored big with Puget Sound King Crabs and found some really neat stuff. Check it out!

I appreciate that man! Yeah, it's sad to see places getting treated with little to no respect. I'll be honest, I've come a long way over the years. Jumping into the ocean and seeing the environments first hand has really helped drive my passion for sustainability.

Yeah man, that one Clayton found was huge. They get so big, it seems like such a waste to take a Dungeness size one home. Let them grow, produce some offspring, and then take them home after a few life cycles. It's absolutely absurd that the DFO doesn't implement a size restriction. Such complete nonsense. It's spelt Salp, they are such weird creatures. Same with the sea angles! Super beautiful though. And thanks, come say hi if you're free! The talk should be fun but the booth day is what I'm really looking forward too! Both will be exciting.

Hey, I live in Vancouver, I would like to start diving and learn of the diversity surrounding. What we need to start? What are the cost of doing it? And what license do you need to for fishing? Cheers
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson 6 ай бұрын
Hey man! Being a diver is somewhat challenging in Vancouver. The expensive part is taking the ferry over to Vancouver Island all the time. It's a good time though, I used to load a vehicle up and we'd do day trips all the time. To get geared up, you're looking at $1000-$2000 depending on the equipment. If you respect the gear you can get years of solid use from it though. I'd recommend checking out my educational playlist which covers pretty much everything you need to know to dive locally. Also swing by divingsports in Vancouver on main street, they'll have everything you need and are great people.

Vancouver Island! Out of respect to the environment and fellow harvesters, I try and be discreet around the places I visit. I fear my footage is already too revealing. It's an internal struggle I deal with every time I post a video. Sorry! 😬

@@PNWSamsonIt is appreciated! Same as camping spots and fishing spots. If you want to know where they are, you have to put in the work to find them yourself. Once you achieve such an accomplishment you will immediately understand why you shouldn’t just give them up to be overrun. To divulge is to destroy. My pet peeve is KZfaqrs who give up the spots for Patreon money…

@@HalcyonGuitars Yeah man, the most exciting and rewarding days I've had are the ones where I discover a new spot. It doesn't hit the same when someone leads you right to it. People selling locations on Patreon? Never knew that was a thing... Crazy.

Please stop showing/telling people where you are! It’s people like you showing the beauty that we have here which in turn draws more people which in turn destroys the beauty that we have here. It’s great that you take people on adventures via KZfaq but you don’t need to tell them where you are. I was born in comox and have lived on the island for 49 years, am a commercial diver by trade, commercial fishermen, sports fishermen, hunter, generally an outdoor enthusiast. It really sucks when I go these places that are special gems that one would be able to enjoy in solitude or maybe with a couple of other people but now when I arrive there is a bus load of people there strewn about, beating down the bush, leaving their garbage everywhere, disrespecting the nature the beauty, all because they saw this wicked awesome spot on a video and decided they want to go there too. I’m not saying you are disrespectful or leave garbage around, etc. I’m just saying the more you tell the less awesome these spots become. Just think about it 🤷🏼‍♂️. Oh and one more thing, “sustainable seafood harvesting”? Do you have any idea how old that Box crab is? How long they take to grow that large and mature? Bro, do some research! 🤦‍♂️ Eat red rock crab or dungies, those are sustainable crabs.
@PNWSamson
@PNWSamson Ай бұрын
@@dumpbear0 Sorry, you lost me at "I'm a commercial fisherman." No offense, but you are the last person who should be preaching about sustainability. One of the main reasons the ocean is so f$@cked is because of over fishing. Not to mention the millions of tons of lost plastic fishing gear that enters our marine environment on a yearly basis. Hell, just the other day another humpback whale was entangled in a fish net off our coast. Puget sound king crabs are open for harvesting. Daily limit of one with a possession limit of two. There is no commercial opening (thank god as they would be gone in no time), they rarely come up to dive able depths and they don't enter recreational fishing traps. If you want to get angry about something, email the DFO and ask them to implement a minimum size restriction, an annual limit and show sex identification on their website like I've been doing every year for the last 5. Currently they have none of the above... I'm pretty discreet about the locations I visit. I don't share locations with strangers and I delete comments when people spot drop. Our marine environment is beautiful, as you are well aware, and the more people who explore it will understand why it's so important to protect it. I know this first hand. Ocean lovers are not the ones going around leaving garbage... We go around and clean up garbage. Virtually every dive I go on in cleaning up fishing line and lures. I had a guy comment that he caught a Puget sound king crab while jigging, it was entangled in fishing line... I bet you won't stop angling will you? Like it or not, Vancouver Island is a beautiful world class destination. I hope you don't travel abroad, I'm sure some people in Mexico feel the same way you do.
