I set myself the challenge to restore the ancient barn wall in one week and I did it. Was it an absolutely mammoth job to complete alone? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely. We're really hoping to have this barn restored by the end of the summer so we can relax and entertain under it. It has so much potential. It's a huge space that has been neglected for a long time. The wall was not in good shape but now that it has been sympathetically repointed using lime mortar it should stand for a long time. Of course, there is still the other side to do. Next up will be replacing the end beams!

As well as the house we will be transforming the garden, bringing part of it back to its previous use as a potager. This is our dream and one of the main reasons of leaving the city to move to the countryside in France.

Thank you for the video. It really does bring home the "almost meditative" vibe that this process gives. Mixing in the bits of the "process" that the farmers around you follow as summer deepens underscores it.

What a treat to come home to. I was away for a few days ,and was looking for a relaxing video. This is perfect. It looks like the sort of job that a person could lose track of time doing, soothing in a way. (maybe because I wasn't the one doing it). All the little nature shots that are interspersed adds to the soothing effect, like a little distracting daydream in the middle of the job. I especially liked the raindrops falling from the roof like strings of translucent pearls. The garden is looking great! Thank-you for sharing! I mean that.

Beautiful, edited video, some really great videography, linking the beautiful surroundings and the farmers harvesting, amazing how French farmers stick to traditions and older machinery compared to those in the UK. The barn looks huge and has o much potential, I have just come across your site and already subscribed, you are a genuine young family making their time together on this project part of the goal, the French way of life is something you have to embrace and you look like you are respecting those traditions which will serve you well. I wish you every success with your project, if you need some labour for a week or two you let me know.

@@LivingintheLoire Good luck on that, I am based in Lincolnshire about 20 miles outside of Lincoln if you know that area of the UK. We have spent a lot of time in Normandie over the years and the house builds in France are something special, real character, it must be harder with such a young family and to provide an income, you both seem very grounded people and having seen lots of these renovations yours I find the most genuine.

I want to thank you for this video. I am restoring a two hundred year old house in Kentucky (USA)- the mortar that was used is red clay. It never occurred to me to use a power washer to remove it so that the cut limestone can be efficiently repointed!

Wow, Brook. Just WOW! What a huge job, but what a result! It's a great space. You should be very proud and feel very accomplished after doing that! The beams are going to look spectacular when they've been power washed, the bit that you did looks amazing doesn't it? How old is the barn, those sort of buttresses on the outside make it look almost medieval. It's going to be a huge asset for you all to enjoy. Much love and big hugs xxx

Thanks Karen. Is there anything more satisfying than power washing?! Looking forward to getting them all cleaned up as best I can. I don't know the exact age. I'm imagine it's similar to the rest of the buildings which are around 18th century.

No, I just repointed this one wall to strengthen and preserve it (and stop mice living in it). We'll keep the rest of it open. Just getting two of the beams sorted and then will look at putting something down on the floor.
