Must be why I had the best dog in the world We went for two walks a day Most of it off leash and we just learned to be in sinc with each other Moving forward is what we did It was a very natural thing Felt like a total understanding of each other In return he just wanted to please He knew how to act in any situation

I have an adult dog that we rescued at a year and a half old. 90lb mastiff boxer mix. He did not have any commands at the time. A year later he can sit and that's about it. But he is hands down the best dog I've owned. Because we didn't worry about commands and just taught him how to be a part of the family. I have 5 kids and he is everyone's best friend. Completely chill inside and fun outside. All he can do is sit on command but he a fabulous pet

Thank You... explains why my dog, as gentle and as great as he is, would only listen to me when we were “training”. He always determines IF he’s in the mood to be on or not. We totally missed having the relationship you describe and mutual respect aspect and got caught up in performance. We have a new puppy and I’m so grateful for all tour videos! We are going to change things around with this one! We know better now so we’re going to do better. Thank You for your advice and for not being quiet Larry! You’re a tremendous help!

I do believe the things you have to say in every aspect of a dog's life. You are my trainer so I can teach my 21/2 year Rottweiler he's my buddy. We do alot together except he has a couple problems. #1 he gets away from me at least once in our walks chasing bicycles and anything else that has wheels. A bicycle fell on him at 9 months old twice .I was told to take him for a bike ride. I tryed He's very strong and I love my dog and I want to take him places without him thinking everyone's out to hurt me or him. He also loves to chase cats I had one that was wild and became tame. When I got Rock they both would play as he got older he would chase Larry the cat. Larry got killed near the freeway by my house when Rock was only 11 months old. Can you help I'm a 57 yrs old women and I live in a small farming town in California of 64 thousand people I'm in the middle of town it's has been rough since the people think he's gonna hurt some one I trust him other then chasing a cat that hangs out in a Bush in the yard and chasing bicycles and or anything that has wheels. Please help any suggestions from you I will try. Your a awsome teacher Thank You

This is so on point with that I have learned with my dog this past few weeks! The message I learned, was learn your dog, how they respond and the way to get the information to them. NO 2 dogs are the same, I think trainers who put a solid " THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO DO IT" method, end up failing in the end because the dogs dont always get the information download

Interesting perspective - as a new GSD puppy owner this is a fascinating take. Hearing you talk about your puppy and the difference in him as an adult makes me happy. Our little guy is 4 months and learning fast but he has his bad days and sometimes will just pull and ignore you - positively, we’ve noticed even at 4 months, he has started to check in frequently with us when he walks. Good sign I guess!

I mean it is easy for me to sit down and explain to them, hey this is what you need to do, but that doesn't mean they will actually listen. Do you have any specific advice on how you have got your clients in the past to not only listen, but follow your advice? I find that some of these people can be stubborn, so I was just curious if you have any methods that have worked for you in the past.

I love this, this is what I want. My girl is an 8 month old boxer-pitbull mix. My main question is how do I get my dog to think I am awesome?(Silly question, I know).... she follows me around in the house a little bit(she is very independent & stubborn) , I have done some obedience and I know there are some things I have not been consistent with like crating her every night(I fixed) but like you said I simply want the good behavior, a well-behaved dog. Because I was working full-time when I got her and a friend was watching her , I feel like our bond isn't that strong, how do I build that and help get her to be calmer, not so distracted, and on such high alert. When we go out for structured walks now she is distracted and I can't seem to produce the relaxed "just be with me" feeling. In addition to this I've noticed she is seemingly getting more aggressive, with smaller dogs , and even with random people or dogs (even in distance) she has started growling/barking and she didn't used to do this.. Is this due to the lack of a strong bond?

It has helped me and bringing one pup DOWN TOWN every day it is extremely important that my pup understands commands for the dogs safety.. My dogs used to bolt out in front of me and now they do not.. I am still working on behavior mod. and dog dog aggression.. Watching has helped greatly!! THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE!!! LOVE< LOVE < LOVE

Larry we did this today, I watched the owner/handler work the dog for a few moments and there was nothing from dog to owner. So for a good 20 minutes to 30 minutes we got her to relax and chill and just walked up and down building owner to dog engagement and fun. After that short time she couldn’t believe the dog was just walking by her side looking up at her. Dog relaxed and walking naturally with no tension

Totally agree in principle, but I train clients to do basic obedience with their dogs in order for them to see their dogs actually responding to them. I find it builds their confidence and shows them how they need to be consistent and clear. I suppose my conclusion would be that obedience is more useful to my clients than their dogs, but their dogs benefit either way.

All my 3 dogs come from a shelter. I did not 'train' them at all. They walk good on the leash, they are completely free in the house without doing anything wrong. They sleep on the (leather) sofa (they are allowed to coz I'm alone and hardly get any visitors) and sometimes on the rug, just as they like. As soon as I move away from my desk their eyes are following me. I can go upstairs (with the livingroom door open) and they stay where they are without me saying a word. They are good with children (many times a child on the street ask 'may I pet them?' and the answer is always yes of course). They are good with people and all other dogs. When somebody wants to visit me with a dog (which they have never seen), it is o.k., they are welcoming the visitordog and thats it. On my sisters birthday the whole family is there to visit, last time (we all are dog lovers) with totally 11 dogs. And we walked in the forest with every dog without the leash. I am confident and I trust my dogs.

Yeah I don't get the over placing habit either. i've stopped placing my dog because i don't see the point if the dog knows how to be calm inside the house. I see trainers who place all the time and their dogs are already so well behaved?? i put a lot of time into structure and habits since the day I got him. if the dog knows the good habits then it can be free in the house.

obedience = compliance with an order, request, or law or submission to another's authority. This outright includes how your worst rott puppy became a good obedient happy dog. Obedience IS NOT JUST sit come lay/down stay. Its the totality to make you dog an obedient happy dog.

From DR - “You say dogs shouldn’t be confined inside the house, but i remember you saying until they are one year old they sleep inside the crate and until two years they are inside the crate whenever you are outside the house. So i thought you do teach them rules. And you have a puppy on a long leash inside the house or it is inside the crate. Just don’t know if i understood that correctly.” Thanks for the great content!

100% agree. I have 7 month german shepherd and for those who know that breed will agree they’re very curious about everything! Ava wont be more than 30ft away from me when off leash. Why is that!? Sure I did basic training but I am not a dog trainer-I don’t know what I am doing so it can’t be obedience training. To echo this video it all starts and ends in your relationship with your dog. I hate dog parks, but go to one and take a look how dogs act around their owners. The moment the gate opens, dog flies out and at the end owners spend 15 min trying to wrangle the dog to come back and go home - usually ending with dog getting punished or be put on the leash and dragged off the park.

Totally agree. Dogs need to know rules. I love doing obedience just to see how much a dog can do. I do think all dogs need a solid recall though for safety reasons. Plus no chasing behaviour etc. Great video Larry : ) Note. you are talking about having the right energy. I can tell any dog to behave just with body language and the correct energy. I won't tolerate bad behaviour. Many dog owners just don't have the strong energy required for a high drive working type dog. I don't use crates ,none of my dogs touch bins or chew etc. Start it right from puppies and it is easy. My latest 17 month old BC was an awful biting machine lol. I have trained her in bite work etc. Dogs think so differently from us. Never will they be like us.

I feel u. I always have rotts. I never walk them on leash once they're trained. I got so much flack! Even though none of my neighbors keep their dogs on leashes, shepherds, even a pit bull...that's ok. But I get singled out simply because mine is a rott. Mine is the best behaved!!! But because he was so much bigger and "scary looking" I'd have ppl say stuff about him being off leash when he didn't even look at them let alone act aggressive. I've had mother's pick up small children or their lil dogs and run the other way or cross the street. It's bullshit. I also use food reward training and positive reinforcement and until now I've always adopted adult rotties w neglect, trust and abandonment issues. They all ended up the BEST dogs ever!!! And I am not a professional. This time after losing my last rescue to cancer after only 6 yrs w him (he was 5 when I adopted him) I decided to get a puppy this time. It's momma is due in Aug. That's why I'm here. Brushing up on my training skills. I'm so excited!!! And I'm enjoying your videos I'll keep watching. Are you available for questions? I'm buying a German rott whose parents are from Europe. I've been warned about their exceptionally low tolerance to parvo virus. I'm wondering how to potty train and socialize him while his parvo is being boosted. The breeder is recommending 4 boosters. That's almost an additional 4 months after I get him. Am I being too anxious about losing that time in socialization?

I'm so glad you are against about dogs being confined at home! My dog is a watch dog so what is the use putting him in a cage taking all the freedom to guard the house, I don't need a watch dog. While I'm out he doesn't trash the house. My dog does all basic things without prong collar or e-collar or treat. I got your book about e-collar training because he started to fight my another dog, Jack Russel! Maybe there was signs about his dominance, and I didn't notice. After 6 fights they are separated. I'm still reading your book, how to correct the behavior of my watch dog going after the little one. He's big and heavier than me. SIGH...

Obedience is for the dog living in our world because in service/therapy work we need to convert their behaviors to our language/signals for the sake of humans so when they see and hear it they know what we mean. We live with our dogs and they with us, good behaviors for kids or animals is taking what they offer us and work it into our lives. One does need to consider that some dogs take a longer time to mature and it is our job to work with that and not force it. I am for positivity but like you say naturally. I do train my dog to do many things. As puppies, we just short leashed them for our sake but they learned to be around and we just let them loose. We have had good dogs always, the only problems we had were with older dogs, but eventually, they got it. Yeah I don't agree with forcing a dog, it has to come within and we need to be with our dog and they also need to know us. I can usually tell on the trainers as they do well with all types of dogs but to live in our world is just a reality. Keep sharing, love your honesty, if we have a pet we need to just not box them into our lives. Blessings to you and yours.

I agree with you. My Bull Terrier knows all the rules in the house and all the obedience commands. However, he chooses to break the rules ... He listens only as and when he likes ..I've owned many German Shepherds before and they can be trained more easily than my Bull Terrier. I nailed the unwanted behaviour of my German Shepherds and they learn well. I used the E collar to nail the unwanted behaviour of my Bull Terrier... But he will still try and repeat that same behaviour again and again... He will only stop for a few days. . . He's got intensive exercise daily, eats well, gets to roam around free, gets affection,, but my Bull Terrier will continue to do unwanted things. :( .... He doesn't look away from me whenever he sees me... He gets really excited... So I really don't understand my Bull Terrier.... Do you have any suggestion Larry?

Always preached that. Obedience is the most overrated concept. Sit is another absolute overrated concept. Training and being are two completely different concepts, yet is the goal of the holistic approach. Obedience brings neurophysiological change: being attunes the dogs cardiological frequency to the handler.

Treats are way over used. Most breeds thrive off of just pleasing you, a happy voice giving praise is more than enough in most training situations or a good play session after. Treats that are used should always be phased out, let the dog work for you not food!

Fractal Universe I’m loose leash training my beagle largely without the use of treats. I want him to know when the leash is on he needs to not be all over the place. He’s stubborn and distractable but he’s learning.

Hey Larry I've been watching your KZfaq videos for a while especially some of your demonstrations you do with the e-collar I have an American Bully just turned 12 months old and he went for a board and train for one month and it was low-level stimulation from the mini educator so anyway I paid for this one month program and it was supposed to cover all your basic obedience on leash and off leash obedience she called it off leash reliable. He was supposed to return to me 100% reliable on the commands sit down heel . Come place sit/stay till released down/stay till released . Countersurfing. Appropriate chewing ECT ECT it was one of the worst mistakes I made she took my dog brought them back three days early because she said it was 4 weeks but her program is by the week or a one month board and train anyway it also was supposed to cover for 1 hour follow up sessions which she has never done one she had my dog a month and there was no communication she never got back to me I didn't know nothing on the progress except for one time I got a response from her and that was a couple of days before she was bringing him home he will sit he will place he will down if I have a treat and I point to the ground there is no heel it's let's go and he will come and walk off leash behind you he won't pass ahead of you but he wasn't trained to know side he goes back and forth from right to left she spent a total of maybe 10 minutes at drop off explaining how to work the e-collar so I stopped using it because I find myself getting frustrated bye to tell him something several times for him to do it that after watching your videos I stopped the collar because I really don't know the correct way to use it she didn't explain nothing so I don't want to ruin what little he has learned by using the collar the wrong way you have any advice

obedience = compliance with an order, request, or law or submission to another's authority. This outright includes how your worst rott puppy became a good obedient happy dog. Obedience IS NOT JUST sit come lay/down stay. Its the totality to make you dog an obedient happy dog.
