www.pakmasters.com, People always ask why I have such well behaved dogs. Obedience commands have nothing to do with it. The way you live with your dogs dictates how your dogs live with you. I spend the first two years putting in all the work so that my dogs will be self sufficient and well behaved as adults by two years old

I start all my homework crib sheets with the title "Our dogs live with us how we live with them". My home is calm, I'm calm, my wife is calm, my dogs are calm. Totally agree that the number one mistake new dog owners make with young dogs/puppies is too much freedom before the dog is equipped to handle it. I use crates, play pens and baby gates.

Larry, I have your e collar book and I am just over the moon about your stance on dog training and grateful for all the content you give freely. Truly I am. A LIGHTBULB moment just went off for me, my 11 month old Border Collie is not trustworthy off leash but I made off leash time as a puppy rare! So it's so novel he can't help himself. I really wish I could turn back time. But we're here to make mistakes and grow. Thank you. Hoping the e collar will help give him the freedom he deserves.

Another great video Larry. Absolutely crucial to put that work in early. Over the years we have had Shepherds, two Terverens, and just got a Rotti/Shepherd cross puppy a month ago. While our dogs are not in the same league as yours they have always been well behaved and obedient because we put the work in early. I have had many people comment about getting a dog that behaves like ours. I always tell them, don't do it unless you are prepared to put in the time required for socialization and training. Love your videos.

Well, I see where I went wrong. I crate my pup when unsupervised and away, but since he was young, always played with him in the house. So he is always in play mode in the house. Doesn't matter if he had a long walk, run, play time and training, he is always still looking for something to do, like he is restless. His toys are left out. He is 11 months. He is starting to get to the point he will settle for some time outside of the crate with us, but I am going to have to eliminate play time and toys inside the house it seems.

I personally beg to differ, and disagree with the video on this I think playful and him playing with toys in the house is more fun, engaging and helps keep him entertained while he is bored. Prevents depression for us both. :) Our new dog just came in today, we played a while in and out of the house; and now he is sleeping on the couch :). Our dog is a year and a stray rescue. He is a Rhodesian ridgeback mix.

I had to stop playing tug with my GSD at about 4 months--I am a small woman, and the dog was getting too big and strong. Furthermore, I wanted to discourage her prey drive as much as possible; I want the dog as a pet and to get along with all the other pets, including cats and chickens. But most of all, she loved playing tug more than anything and was ready to play very aggressively with anything I had in my hands. The best thing I ever did was stop playing tug. Second best thing was keeping her on leash 24/7. I can see how it works for you, but for me she was quickly uncontrollable and forgot all commands after 10 minutes off lead. After a couple of months, I got a small kitten, and making the dog behave with the cat has taught her a lot of self control.

Linda Abraham, you would've been better off witha good dog trainer than stop playing with her. There is so much to teach with play, and playing tug with a german shepherd is really beneficial. The thing is, you can't crate the prey drive of the dog for long. I play tug with my german shepherds to teach them to listen to me in an high state of arousal. If you can't bring your dog to stop and sit or place in pkaying, you sure as hell can't do it if she wants to bite the postman or chase a squirell. And than, you should ask yourself some questions, if this is the right dog for you. There are plenty of good trainers, go get help. There is no shame in that. It has nothing to do with you being a small woman and the the dog is big and strong. My shepherd weighs at least as much as my wife, and is much stronger than her. Still she is able to control him.

I just have to comment here...I have always loved watching your videos to see if there is anything new I can learn for future reference...all of my dogs have always turned out to be very good and well behaved dogs but I have always done a couple things differently...no Im no trainer by no means lol just a big dog enthusiast....I have crated when Im gone till they are old enuff to train them that they cannot get into things or chew on anything they are not supposed to and always leave the cratew door open when home to give them a choice if they decide they want to go in there and lay down and thatb has always worked for me...and they often do go in the crate and lay even when I am home cuz by doing that it gives them a sense of the cage not being a bad thing but it gives them a sense of that is their safety go to place and they become protective of their crate....mine will stand there and keep an eye on me when I am cleaning and moving their (safety place) crate around till I get done then they will go get backinside it and stand there and stare me down like are ya done with my place now? LOLI have never had to use a leash on mine tho unless I take them inside of a store or the vets office other than that they always stay at my side and dont pay attentrion to other dogs that may try to approach them. I highly disaggree however with the no toys rule...to me thats not allowing them to be...well dogs....that to me would create a lot of boredom and give them more reason to seek out things to occupy their boredom....wouldnt that have made a very borimg life for you if you had to grow up without any toys????? toys equal enjoyment

Okay, now I'm even more confused :) Can you share the link to the video you're mentioning with Luca? Trying to find it, Ifound one with Halo from Sept 2016 that shows you always keep him on a leash while in the house with you (unless in the kennel). I feel like you've changed your philosophy on this - would super love to understand. We're about to get a new puppy and we want to keep him near us so we can watch him but we like your idea of no leash. So we're getting some puppy gates but boy they get expensive and it would be crazy to gate every doorway in our home. Would love to know your advice here. Thanks so much!

Big Fan Larry, Few questions. How do you manage other off leash dogs approaching your dog, when A: You have a young pup off leash. B: A trained adult dog in heel position with e collar no lead. C: An adult dog on the lead with or without e collar? D: A puppy on a lead. Also have a few questions about having a puppy in public at a concert or at a cafe etc. Do you prevent anyone from touching them? And last but not least, I love your formula of bringing up a puppy but could you do an example of what you do if you took home an adult rescue dog. I imagine it would be similar and maybe some changes depending on the dog but would be nice to see. Would also be cool to see you take a rescue and do series of videos of the changes. Also thanks for the videos, they are really great. I used to be against e collars before I watched your videos and now have seen how great of an addition they can be to a training program.

I have told many people about this advice (sleep in the crate 1 yr and home alone in the crate 2 yrs.) I've seen on your puppy videos every time I hear of someone getting a puppy. I think it is great advice. Do you have similar advice for people who adopt dogs 1-2 years old or older that may come with some issues ? And if the puppy doesn't "see a leash" for a long time I assume that means inside the home and not for training or going on walks etc ??

I see some owners let their puppies to walk off-leash next to adult dogs (leashed). You can develop following habit in backyard or other fenced areas if walking off-leash is not safe. If you use a leash, puppy develops habits for waiting for psychical prompts from leash. So, by not using a leash, I think that it prevents dogs from being 'leash smart'.

Love your advice, larry, solid stuff. I think trainers, etc, push leashing so early these days because they know the majority of casual pet owners just suck at having their dogs on a leash and there's so many walking issues these days. Or, it's a better alternative to the dog being unsupervised which a lot of numb nuts tend to do with their dogs.

Just found your videos, have gotten an e collar I have 23 mo GSD I really have no problems with him, he knows his commands. I am retired and stay at home with him. Don't have any aggression issues. Introduced him to all sounds machinery etc very early. We live on a farm. My only problem is he feels like farm cats are fair game. He becomes oblivious to the sound of my voice. He is 100+ # and recently pulled loose, resulting in a fractured hand trying to hold on. He does know leave it so I'm thinking to reinforce that with the new collar But beginning with the leash, come, place, sit, stay?

At 8 wks were in a car accident and I had to be away from her for a wk. Now even when I crate her she rips bars out and claws the floor(she moves the tray) She is not alone we have older dogs in crates the she can see. Also (I call it the witching hour) every evening 4-5pm she starts being very jumpy and vocal. Her bark is LOUD!! She's quiet the rest of the day. I bought her to train as a service dog and she has been stellar out in the community and learning. When she gets uncomfortable she gives me every command I have taught her. 😭😢 Please help me help her! ?

Jennifer Newberry sounds like separation anxiety, can still happen, as it's humans she feels she needs, not dogs. If she is successful in her SDT I assume she will go every where with you, so this would not be a problem. I have also heard that service dogs can develop seperation anxiety, as they never leave their owner and for some owners, their life may be dependent on their dog performing a task - the dog knows that, so why wouldn't they be worried?

ivi122 I am by no means a experienced dog trainer. But crate training takes a little time, in and out of the crate with a treat each time in. There are some really good videos on crate training and some really bad ones. What I did was make the space for my GSD just big enough for her to sleep and move around a little. The kennel was covered kind of like a tent. The enclosed space helped to calm her and she didn't potty in her space. I would say kennel, and she would go in, good girl, get a treat, then break or what ever release command you want to use. After awhile, I started closing the door for short periods of time and after some time she associated it as a good place for her. I'm sure Larry can give much better advice than I can. Biggest thing is patience.

Mark K you don't have to be an experience trainer to give good advice on training...you just proved that. I have watched videos but the info is so divided...some ppl say give treats if they go in, others say feed them in there sometimes while other ppl say never feed them in the crate ugh. I am going to try your technique of giving treats and praising her, then lock the door after a few days and hopefully she'll learn to love it. Thanks!

its very possible being that old they can hold their bladder for sometime and sleep thru the night. does he sleep on a bed? put his bed in a crate so he knows it's his spot, unless he has a history of destruction, etc. most dogs just want to feel comfy and cozy in a crate, so it's all about being comfortable.

Larry...we recently adopted a (6 month?) old Pit Bull pup from a shelter. He sleeps in the crate at night and when we leave the house...but he's too old for the off leash puppy training. In the house he's a really good dog but when I let him out into our fenced yard he runs back and forth along the fence and barks when people walk their dogs past...which drives me crazy!!! He's really smart and easily learned sit...stay...heel and come within a matter of a couple of days...but when he's at the fence...no amount of calling will make him come. I have to physically go retrieve him...and sometimes he tries to turn it into a game by running away from me. He gets at least one walk, if not two every day, so I don't think it's just a matter pent up energy. If you have a video that addresses this issue please provide a link...I'd be grateful for any help!!!

Boy did I do everything wrong with my 9 month old Maltese puppy 😕 From day one of bringing her home at 12 weeks, she hated being crated and has severe anxiety when we try. Biting the cage, shredding any kind of bed we put in it, even pooping in it every time. I gave in and put the crate away. We did get a bigger pen type of thing for when we’re gone but she still hated being left alone and I always have a poop mess to clean up when we do get home. I have no idea how to get her over the anxiety. She is our 5th dog over the years and the only one we’ve had these issues with.

But after two years, wouldn't the dog feel the freedom and go wild when finally loose in the house after two years of being crated?

Delo Solo no the dog is not created for two years. The dog is only created when you're not there to supervise.

Larry Krohn Sorry, I wasn't clear on what I was talking about. I was referring to them being unattended while no one is home

Delo Solo no not at all at that point you have a very well-trained dog that can be trusted in all environments on its own.

Your off lease won't work with most people ! Not many people live in areas where there is a lot of land .

Absolutely agree....there is no way I am walking my 16 week old GSD off leash unless I am deep in the woods. I live in an area with many cars and streets and I don't see how any puppy will be ok where there is car traffic and side walks. I walk my puppy 3 times a day for total of 4 miles and ONLY on leash.

Don't let them sleep in your bed or else they'll start looking at you as a peer instead of the pack leader.

your taking life to serious, people have a real job lol they cant just fukin be there 24/7 but it don't mean they cant get a puppy. Stop making it sound hard for a first time owner than it actually is.

I mean I’d listen to the guy with 20 years of experience over you. Is he a little over dramatic sometimes? Sure. But that stems from seeing the worst of the worst and for so many years. The man is passionate and wants only the best for people and their dogs. Can’t knock him for that.
