Welcome to Sensible Secondhand Classics, the series where we take a sensible classic car worth between £1000 and £5000 and put it through its paces in a very straightforward manner! This time, as we test a 1995 Rover 820 Vitesse Sport Turbo (R17), we complain about overlight steering, get specific about the colour of wood, take a bear for a ride, get excited about an aftermarket boost gauge and generally experience very little of any consequence at all. Nothing untoward then!

Excellent review, MR. Lloyd, a lovely car indeed. One would prefer a Sterling spec 800 with a beige leather interior. It's incredible to see the 800 next to a 75, and how much more modern the 800 looks and the size of it.

Sir, we would indeed prefer a Sterling with a beige leather interior, but one was just fine as well. Glad you enjoyed the context in which we did the video!

Very Comfortable and Luxurious Rover 800 with 197 bhp. Very spacious, as was the SD1 before it. Good looking body shape with the trademark Rover Grille. I still now favour the 1989/90 827 SLi in this colour. My friend bought 1998 R17 Sterling V6 at 9 years old in silver with a grey leather interior and wood. It was a fabulous thing for only £2,800. One careful owner and a full service history.

Sir, we do like a nice 800 Sterling, and it looks as if you can still buy those for reasonable money. Glad you enjoyed this video, the main issue was the steering, but I still like the very much.

This is a very delightful vehicle! I like the later versions of the Rover 800, the early models are too angular for me, this version has softened its lines. Great review Joseph as always!

Some people like the very 1980s look of the original XX 800s, but equally some people prefer these later ones. Glad you enjoyed the video, sir, thank you again for watching!

Lovely Sir, it's funny how I remember the 800 being so different visually from the SD1 when it was launched, but now years later, it looks like an SD1 mk2 in a way ..

Yes, there does seem to be a bit of a family resemblance, especially with the fastback models. Thank you again for watching, sir!

An anticipated review, great to see it being featured. When I was a teenager our neighbor had a pre facelift champagne metallic 820Si Fastback with 220GTi style alloys, it was pure class...

Yes, we do like the Rover 800, sir, very much, especially one which has a Turbo. They are very handsome cars, I don't know whether I prefer the earlier or the later ones...

I can't believe how cheap they used to be back in the day. To be honest, they still aren't that expensive, even for one in lovely condition like this. They are stupidly quick with the 197 bhp turbo engine!

I had a 180hp model and had a problem with sudden a massive intermittent oil plume I eventually discovered that the original engine restricted oil supply to the cylinder head by the size of the hole in the block later engines the restriction was achieved by putting the restriction in the head gasket mine had the wrong head gasket so when cruising on prolonged motorway the cylinder head would fill oil and discharge the excess into the induction resulting into the plume of smoke relatively easily fix.i had bought my car security hand.

That sounds like quite a basic error to fit the wrong head gasket to one of these T-Series Turbo engines! Thank you very much indeed for watching and commenting.

Good Afternoon Sir. Rover did make some disastrous decisions over the years, but bringing out the hatchback version of the 800 series quickly after releasing only saloon models was quick thinking and probably extended the life of the car.

Yes, the fastback 800 was very appealing to a lot of people, and was a variant never available with the Honda Legend. Rover were very good at making multiple variations on the same platform, the slightly later R8 200/400 was the best example of this.
@paulie-Gualtieri.

I always wished the 800 was rear wheel and had 5 wheel studs, plus the option of a V8. Loved the style and interior appointments, especially the early Sterlings.

That's a stunning car. Feeling like a larger R8 is certainly no bad thing, as you know I adore the R8 and the sight of a 90's river interior brings back memories, even the smell of the materials used inside that could only be a Rover. I wonder if this could be the same car that I saw at The Motorist last year when they had a Rover day.

I am not sure, sir, but it is in lovely condition, and was an absolute bargain. The way these were made were typical of the Rover/Honda partnership of the time, and I did enjoy it very much... That steering was a bit too light, though.

I always seem to like Rovers. This one is no exception. By the way, when the video started I wondered who was sitting in the passenger seat: there appeared to be an ear-like object at the edge of the frame. Sure enough....it WAS an ear, only that of a large "passenger" sitting in the back. 🙂

Re the 2.5 v 2.7L V6, I believe the Honda 2.5 is VERY torque-shy and needs to be really revved. The 2.7 was designed to address this issue. What a magnificent vehicle though, sir but sadly I am not surprised to hear of electrical faults. Your voice sounded a touch hoarse during this review so I trust you and yours are keeping ok?

I wasn't very well during the Pride of Longbridge and Octagons and Longships Weekend, sadly, but I just had to keep going.... Yes, lots of faults with these when they were common back in the day, but this one has had most of them addressed.

Lovely looking 800, the interior with the recaro seats really sets it off with the red paintwork, was this the one for sale in the auctions at the NEC? As always a fantastic review.

I had a 1994 Vitesse sport many years back and sadly I had lots of problems with it. Electrical issues, Dash lift, dodgy build quality, diff bearings which lunched themselves and lots of oil leaks. No amuout of rose tited glasses would convince me to buy another. They were not great then and I don't think time will have improved matters.

Well, I am on my ninth Rover now, so I am very familiar with the way that they are. The biggest problem with these seems to be getting certain parts these days, the exhaust is the one that stands out.
@simonh870

@@lloydvehicleconsulting I think a lot of the problem was that 15 -20 years ago values were so low that most of them were neglected to a degree as they were firmly in banger territory. Hopefully the few survivors are the better ones. I also had a Mk1 Vitesse 827 with manaul gearbox and that wasn't especially reliable either. Again, it also suffered gearbox bearing issues and dodgy electrics. (Nice honda engine though)
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 9 ай бұрын
@@simonh870 , yes, you can actually still pick these up for relatively little money, even in nice condition. If the gearbox is the same as the one in the Rover 620 ti, then I understand why there would be problems with the bearings.
@simonh870
@simonh870 9 ай бұрын
@@lloydvehicleconsulting The 620ti does share the same box as the 820, the 827 manual box is different but similar and shares many of the same issues. The diff bearings had plastic cages and they cannot handle the torque from the engine. They can be uprated but its a big job to take out the gearbox and fix it.

My 94 m plate Vitesse sport had the colour coded bumpers and side strips and the full 197 bhp and 17 inch alloys which set them apart from the 180 bhp model

Then it must have had parts from a 97 onwards. 94-96 didn't have colour code bumpers and strips. Also 97 on had white rear lights not orange and a different Ignition system. Early vitesse had different wheels and no Climate control or passenger airbag.

@@leesimmons2632 no it didn’t the Vitesse sport was introduced in 1994 there’s a road test in Autocar magazine I had the very same car ! They we’re colour coded 17inch alloys and passenger air bag the 197 bhp engine and stiffer suspension with torsen traction control options were air con and full leather called the lux pack ! I have the original 94 brochure with it in and the autocar road test when I owned my 94 m plate over 12 years ago

I had a 97 model vitesse LUX fastback, all the 94,96 models I looked at including the main dealers didn't have any coloured coded parts and the wheels were star shaped not the same as 97 on. Even rover told me the colour coded parts didn't come out till 97. What I mean by colour coded is the whole bumper and side strip are the same colour as the car and not part black. Also the vitesse sport was introduced in 92. A total off 500 were build in mk1 form in nightfire red. Power was reduced to 172bhp as not to over shadow the 2.7 litre
