And again I have to repeat what I said before - it happened! This is one of my beloved NW songs - regardless of who sings it - I emphasize it! I met this song thanks to Tarja - it's understandable because there was no other version back then. I won't lie - I didn't pay any particular attention to it while listening to the studio version - just - a nice song. But when I heard it live - ooo, that's a completely different story - I fell in love with this song. That's why I often say that it's worth listening to Nightwish live - they add something - often elusive, but that makes a difference! And then came the Floor era. I was very careful about listening to her version of this song for the first time, I didn't know what Floor would do with her, I loved Tarja's version and couldn't imagine another one. Please, old NW fans - I'm one after all - don't shoot me! Tarja made me fall in love with this song - can you also love the other version? You can - Floor can do it! Tarja made me love it, Floor grabbed my heart, grabbed me by the throat and knocked me to the ground - I'm still lying there when I listen to Her version and I come back to it often. You said listening to Floor - "Completely different - but how beautiful!" - and this is it - that's how Floor sings older songs, does not copy, but creates his own versions - beautiful versions! I love both versions the same - great song!

I think this song illustrates perfectly exactly why the old Nightwish fans loved Tarja so much. She sounds like she is singing from another world.

I watch and can not help but to fall in love with Tarja all over again. Fact I am only a year older than her. Hard to believe I was ever so young. Not a comment about how others do it or better or preferred. Just how Tarja's ascending effervescent joy is so clear and grabs hold of my heart. She just does it for me. I only speak to how much I love and applicate the melody and the artist.

This was the first Nightwish song I heard. It played on the radio when I was like 10 years old, asked my mom to buy the album a bit later lol Sleeping Sun is still one of my favorites, it's just so soothing and magical and I love Tarja's voice here.

Like so many others I adore Floor but this song just works better with Tarjas voice for me. It's just otherworldly somehow... I'm glad you enjoyed the song Guylain! 🙂

A beautiful reaction to one of the most beautiful songs of Nightwish.Tarja and Floor are both extraordinary artists that you simply cannot compare. There are a few songs where I find the version of Tarja more beautiful and a few where I find Floor more beautiful. The fact is that both have been blessed by God more than once.

Thank you, in my opinion Tuomas is one of the best composers when it comes to ballads, they are all so beautiful. This song was a request to Tuomas from the German record label for the solar eclipse in Europe in 1999. The song had to be no more than 4 min long, a ballad with a catchy chord. Tuomas didn't reallylike the idea of given so called restrictions to a song, but then he thought why not do a song where we go to sleep with the sun. By this time Nightwish had never been to Germany. This song became a big hit. You should also take a look at one of Nightwish best videos ever made of a song, the 2nd video of this song they made, and you will connect Tarjas beautiful white dress and necklace from the live show, that is really worth watching.

I really like your videos with analysis of the lyrics and reactions to the songs. I've noticed that people who are older react more sincerely and emotionally to songs and take it more seriously than younger guys. I would really like you to do reactions and analysis of all Nightwish songs, but I understand that you most likely have already listened to all the songs of this great band and your reaction is unlikely to be the same as the first time you listened to them. For me, as an old fan of this band, the era with Tarja is special. It's like first love, it's impossible to forget. That time was real magic.

The song inspired by and at least once performed during a solar eclipse. The original Nightwish sound was not going to be metal. More folk music. Then they met Tarja again after she had finished learning classical singing techniques in Germany. Her voice now much to powerful for folk rock. You will be glad to know her life goes very well. She has a career, fans around the world and she is a wife and a mother . Some people really do get to have it all. She is still humble, kind, generous. Still giving to others. Amazing person and an amazing artist and performer. She does classic hyms, she does Christmas carols , she does classical music and yes symphonic metal as well. The world can use more of such people in it. Kittos =Merci! For what its worth she would have been 26/27 at the time of this concept. Her last with the band.

Floor has managed to put the competitions aside .. how? Giving us versions of equal caliber, in songs that are not written for his voice .. but he manages to captivate you and think .. Do I really need to figure out who is better in this song? No .. Incredibly and like no other band in the world .. We are proud of our past with Tarja, and our present with Floor .. Both sounds make up the perfection, contrast, and how diverse the Nightwish world is. Today Tarja and Floor for the fan of Nightwish, are the Same thing .. They are the majesty in front of a microphone trying to give the best show of their life, one and another night .. And of course, the TOTAL and unanimous acceptance that all the tears shed for happiness come from the mind of this incredible composer that is Tuomas, who brings out the best in each member.

The song that made me listen to Nightwish, like Floor and love Marko's bass. I've listened to this song almost religiously every fall when darkness is taking over, even when I didn't listen to anything else from Nightwish. THE Nightwish song for me :)

To me this is one of the NW songs where i do prefer Tarja, not that Floor isnt doing it very beautiful to, but yes i would say i prefer the studio version of this one with Tarja.. because its just so beautiful and relaxing to listen to that one..

Doesn't matter if its tarja or floor its perfect either way and for a band to manage and get two singers of that caliber in a lifetime is insane and on top of that marcos voice and the Skill on instruments of the rest of the band is just crazy.

I listened to this song first with Floor and i ended up like you!! In loss for words, i just ran up to my mother and she loved too, and became one of her's and mine favourite NW songs!! I really love Both Tarja's and Floor's version, I have chills to listen to Tarja's voice in this one (wich it's really rare for me, i admit), but Floor just captivate me the most, her presence it's magical and her voice it's so sweet and angelic in this song and i really like Tarja's voice but i'm not really captivated by her performances, her corporal language and that makes a huge impact on me!! The song Swanheart it's my favourite song by NW sang by Tarja!

Can it (the melody) be matched? Try Swanheart from the same album. Tuomas has this uncanny ability to craft a heart-wrenching melody almost at will. I agree that I (just) prefer Tarja's version but only because I think the timbre of her voice suits it a bit more. But you're right that Floor did the right thing in not emulating Tarja, but gave us a new way of hearing this beautiful song, and that can only expand the number of good things in the world. Looking forward to the analysis.

This ballad, as originally conceived, fits the mold of "Grand Opera"in its purest sense - replace the electric instruments with a full orchestra and this would be a "hit" for any star soprano, of a caliber at that, of which there are not many in all of Romantic age! It truly seems to touch on Eternity, as you remarked. The funnier then, that "Sleeping Sun" is one of the few songs Tuomas has ever written on demand! :)) I fail to record the full story, but he was asked to pen a song to coincide with a rare total Solar eclipse that took place that year - and was initially reluctant to do it. :) But hey, eclipse in itself is such an inspiring and awesome occurence that when a true poet opens himself to the thought, the words just flow. And as often, here the Cosmic and the deeply human coexist in outstanding verses - the most natural way for a person to perceive the infinite? Finally, after reading the lyrics, I am suprised they are not at all so direct and "clear" as I always thought! As for the performance, Tarja really goes for that majestic delivery, hitting some crazy but smooth notes, cleverly elevated in white above the rest of us mortals - it all sums up into almost ethereal feel so befitting her "aria". Floor, as you noted, chooses another approach, although she has the ability to go there vocally. She really enunciates every phrase, accentuating the rhythmic pulse of the verse (which was lost on me before hearing this version) and offers unmatched expressiveness: beguiling and comforting at once. While Tarja projected a radiant star among the elements of the infinite, here - you are very right! - the visuals that I get are a campfire under the starry sky, or a mother's lullaby even, on a peaceful summer's eve. Either way, this one is of those ballads that shape musical experience and taste of a generation - for mine, it stands along with "Wind of Change" or "Nothing Else Matters". Except that "Sleeping Sun" steps over into the Classical realm as well. A truly universal creation.

How beautiful all versions are. I feel at peace for now. About Tarja and Floor: Somebody once said Tarja is our distant queen and Floor is our glorious Valkyrie we have a drink with. This song is Tarja's.

For the first time in many years, many reaction videos and many reactors, I've been to the comment section of a Nightwish song and there is actually some good sense between those that prefer Tarja to Floor (or the other way around) when it comes to "the Tarja era songs". "sleeping sun" is just that song that can be sung by anyone on this planet and it will sound amazing, cause it's an amazing song. There's also another version of this song, from a concert with Tarja, featuring Mike Terrana on the drums. "The Beauty and the Beat" I think that's the name of the concert. Both live versions presented here are breathtaking, goosebump material, regardless if it's Tarja or Floor singing. I have my preference, everyone has their preferred version, but they are both simply amazing. Thank you for sharing this

I'll add a little history about the recording of this masterpiece. As we know Tuomas always writes songs himself, guided by his own thoughts, feelings, emotions and observations. But strangely enough, song Sleeping Sun was written to order. To increase sales, Drakkar Records boss Bogdan Kopek came up with idea of a special edition of album, especially for German market. "On August 11, 1999, there was a total solar eclipse in Europe," says Kopek. "And to commemorate event, I asked Tuomas to write a song. He didn't like it very much, but he wrote 'Sleeping Sun' nonetheless. And fact that we got him to do it was our very great good fortune." For a very long time Tuomas didn't agree to offer because he wasn't tempted by commissioned work. "I was strongly against the idea. They said that song shouldn't be longer than four minutes and that it should be done according to formula of a real hit: a ballad with a catchy chorus. They also said there shouldn't be a guitar solo. That was the original plan. But we did manage to put a solo in song! Composition was released in Germany as a single called Sleeping Sun (4 Ballads of the Eclipse) containing "Walking in the Air", "Swanheart", and Angels Fall First. Despite success of single, Tuomas stuck to his original opinion. "I remember when we did a presentation of song for BMG and German division of Island," says Bogdan Kopek. "Evening was successful in every way, but when we went for a walk planned as part of event, Tuomas told me never again in my life to ask him to write songs for a single. Mssage got through to me - I never asked him to do that again," laughs Kopek. Result of this bespoke work was a great-sounding masterpiece.

Poetry of the highest level, overflowing beauty of melody and harmony in perfect communion. It doesn't matter who sings it, some love Tarja, others love Floor in hateful and silly comparison, each one puts her personal stamp on it, both are extraordinary singers. In the end the song is beautiful by itself. This is yet another one of Nightwish's masterpieces, as usual.

Both Tarja and Floor is great in diffrent ways, floor is more rockstyle singer and Tarja the Angelic operatic/symphonic voice!! I prefer Tarja in the old songs, where they got my heart back in 1999. Since am oldschool Nightwish fan, first time stays strong.

Hello again, Guylain! Nice to see you getting acquainted with this marvelous song! Tuomas is great at creating beautiful, remarkable melodies. The fact that they can transcend music genders like you noted is what sets them very far apart from other bands, even ones from the symphonic genre. Unmatched really. Since this song is so even paced it benefits more from the resonance and dramaticity from Tarja's head, operatic voice. The original studio version is my absolute favorite. I think Floor does a very smart approach to the song, singing in a very soft voice and going for it at the end to bring the dramaticity element. She won't try to reproduce vocal qualities Tarja uses in this song (which are Tarja's absolute forte) and I have respect for this. I'm curious about your analysis video now. Tuomas has been pretty straight foward when talking about this song: it's a song written to celebrate a solar eclipse that happened in 1999. It wasn't originally part of Oceanborn, which came out in 1998. It was included later in a reissue.

There's also a studio version of the Tarja live version (recorded for High Hopes - The Best of Nightwish in 2005) the video for which recently turned up on the Nightwish KZfaq channel. Part of the difference is the six years between the original (1999) and this live version and the evolution of Tarja's voice over that period.

the original version is insurmountable and the band with Floor know it that is why they do not try to compete with Tarja 

P. S.: I love love love the moment in Tampere performance, when on cue for the (tasteful little) solo, Floor turns to point towards Emppu and visibly says "Wow!" nodding at the audience. That is just touching, she really goes out of her way to share the love with her "brothers" in the band... Same as having her hand around Tuomas' shoulder walking off stage at the end of this very concert, and numerous other moments that we fans "collect". :) I would go out on the limb saying that the current camaraderie within NIGHTWISH is the best I have seen with them yet - or maybe with any band. Body language says more than words.

I grew up with Floor as the singer of Nightwish and learned to love the band and Floor.In the meantime, of course, I know all the songs from all eras of the band by heart and also enjoy Tarja's voice very much.There are songs that I like more by Tarja and other which I like Floor more with. Sleeping Sun is the only song where I don't have a favorite.In my opinion, Floor and Tarja are in a league of their own.The band survived the separation of Tarja and Anette - but the separation of Floor would be the end of Nightwish!

Ce groupe est pour moi unique, je ne suis pas mélomane, je n'aime que très peu de musique, mais Nightwish me donne une force, une énergie absolument unique. Et toi, franciscain du Canada, tu viens me faire redécouvrir ce groupe, me montrer une facette que je n'avais pas toujours pris la peine d'explorer : la poésie et le sens profond des chansons ; et tout ça en toute humilité, en toute bonté ; car cela saute aux yeux et au coeur que tu es un homme profondément bon. Et, de plus, tu es vrai ; j'ai regardé peu de vidéos de réactions de la part d'autres youtubeurs, mais je suis à peu près sûr que peu d'entre eux sont aussi vrais, notamment parce que tu dis aussi quand cela ne te plait pas (The Carpenter notamment, j'attendais de voir ta réaction à celle-là, et encore une fois, j'étais à 100% d'accord avec toi). Dear Frater Guylain This song has a very special meaning to me as it was my favourite song in the Tarja era. I loved Tarja´s voice and still do. As Anettes voice did not really fit to my ear-drums ( sorry Anette) i stopped hearing NW for a long time. As there was the news that NW got a new vocalist i was very sceptical and did´nt want to waste my time and again be disappointed. It took me 5 years to find the mood to listen to the "new one". After all i took my favourite song and listened to it first with Tarja and then with the "new one". And then happened what you perfectly described Frater. Floor invited me to a campfire to tell me a story ........... But what she did not tell me that this storytelling will cost my soul. And since then.......no day without Floor´s voice...... And yes, as in the comments already mentioned....i want this song also be played at my funeral Now i am looking with tension forward to your analysis. greetz chris

Nightwish prouve encore que c’est un groupe de scène. Tous leurs concerts sont magnifiques. On voit qu’ils se font plaisir tous ensemble. Même si pour Tarja c’était son dernier concert. Si vous avez une petite préférence pour la version Tarja, on peut ressentir que la version Floor vous transporte,votre émotion est palpable.Floor a ce coté discrète mais dès qu’elle œuvre ,elle envahit notre cerveau de toute sa puissance ainsi que de sa douceur . On ne voit qu’elle et on entend chaque musiciens à des moments bien précis de la chanson. Du grand art! This was actually one of the first songs I heard from Nightwish, and the song that made me fall in love with them so many years ago. I found it interesting that you mentioned the similarities to Celtic/Irish melodies, since when I heard the song it was as part of a compilation album called "The Celtic Circle" with lots of different artists from around the world. So you are not alone in hearing the similarities, clearly. I love this song and it's one I come back to over and over again. I actually hadn't heard Floor's version of it before and it made me happy that she decided to make the song entirely her own instead of replicating Tarja's version. As you said, it is the mark of a true artist. Personally, I have a preference for Tarja's version, but I admire both singers equally for their wonderful artistry and musicality. As a singer myself, I can only aspire to be as in tune with my own artistry as both of them are. It brings tears to my eyes watching them perform. So thank you for this lovely reaction. Ce qui est fantastique avec Floor, c'est qu'elle n'essaie pas de copier ou de "faire mieux" que Tarja. Elle interprète les chansons de Tuomas à sa manière... Ça n'empêchera malheureusement jamais bcp de gens de dénigrer l'une pour glorifier l'autre... Ce sont deux chanteuses exceptionnelles tout simplement (et avec un songwriter tel que Tuomas, on est gâtés !!)
