Greetings from Finland! I love your reactions and analysis of the lyrics. Many people listen these pieces just as songs, which is pity as Tuomas is very intelligent and his lyrics are masterpieces full of hidden meanings. I love how you dig into them to find the meaning. And not just the lyrics but also combination with the music and the whole production. My humble thank you for taking us with you to the journey on this new Nightwish album.

You cannot make a more meaningful compliment to me. The combination of word and music (called prosody = prose + melody) is an art by itself, that I appreciate at the highest level. Thank you !

The compositions on this album are just astonishing, with this being yet another example. Tuomas stated several times that he knew he would be challenging the band with what he had put together, but that they all rose to the occasion and made things even better than he had envisioned. How amazing must it be for someone with the creative mind of Tuomas to have such incredible tools at his disposal to truly realize his vision. Just breathtaking! Floor has also done a lot of interviews about the album, and directly discusses how she was challenged. The most incredible thing about her is she can sing such an incredibly unique and crazy difficult melody, but make it sound not only natural/easy, but also convey the emotions of the story she is singing. She described the process as taking one month to figure out how to fit the words into the complex melody lines, another month to then practice simply delivering those lines from a technical perspective, then finally another month+ to add the emotions and truly “sing” the songs. Boggles the mind how not only talented, but dedicated she is. Tuomas and Floor = endless goosebumps and greatness

Unbelievable. Yesterday, I recorded my next [REACTION] where I do a shout out to the Netherlands' visitor. And I describe Floor ability pretty much in those words. I did not know all the details of her preparation, but I could feel this level of excellence. Right from 'Music' in fact. Thanks !

I have to biases : an admiration for artistry, even if I don't agree with the 'values' of the artists. I am able to appreciate beauty and creativity in one's work, without agreeing with hie/her point of view. Here I have to react/evaluate that part of Nightwish's music. Are these good lyrics? Are they good musical pieces? And of course, they are. I still have to listen to 4 songs, but I tend to think that I listen to one of the very best bands presently active. When I say that, I mean 4-5 in the world. As a man of God, I sill say something about his 'vision', his values, the way he sees the world and how humanity can grow. I might disagree here and there. Then I will say it, but that does not affect my appreciation of the artists.

The general 'cinematic' type of metal, like NW does sometimes, is rooted in the romantic period. But some of the lines of Pan are of another influence. I will go and listen to a record I heard 2-3 months ago. Beginning of the 20th century, classical music !

Personally, I find that I need to listen new Nightwish songs through 3 (or so) times first, to get the "scheme of things" (melodies, song structures, lyrics/stories etc) into my head, before I can PROPERLY start listening & enjoying them.. I laughed when Kai kicked those drums into gear in the intro. Emppu calls this song "Pancake" as a descriptor for what it did to him when trying to play it. Before you do your second video, check into the reaction from Patrol Gaming, an Australian who really put his finger onto all of the popular literature and media references in this song. His is an excellent analysis from the popular media standpoint and would probably save you a few steps. For example, the "ape before a door" reference is from Arthur C. Clarke's "2001: A Space Odyssey".

Bill Attercliffe Indeed, Emppu is afraid that ’Pan’ might become a ’Pancake’ in a live performance... 😆 I think he was playing with Finnish words and sayings, namely: when your attempt to do something goes wrong, you say in Finnish, ’siitä tuli pannukakku’ = it turned into/became an (oven) pancake. 😂

Within these different reaction videos, we have had discussion about these KZfaq covers and now NW made an album, which will be a difficult to do covers, those Floor´s parts are just so incredible. Whole album is is just like musical fireworks, 10 songs and all totally different, yet all are good. No weak songs at all. After you have listened whole album, then understand that "Music" is perfect song to open album and "Endlessness" is perfect to finish album. Starting and ending points. Thank you, once again it was nice to follow you!

Do you noticed something? I am use to be the director of two choirs (Gospel style). Music makes my hands move. But also, I always wonder : 'How can my singers sing this?' Hence, amazement and reactions to the melody lines. At one point in my reaction video, I listen very closely to the singing. I wanted to hear if Marko and Troy were the back vocals to these lines. As i suspected, it was female voices. And I am quite certain that you find there 'Floor again', doubles and triple. This level of closeness in the phrasing and in the singing is achieve today, in studio, by re-recording the same singer in overdubs of him or herself. And I have the exact same question : how will they carry that in a live show?!? This level of complexity and precision.

Pan is as you mention a song hitting you at first listen, but its also a song that stays good to me, i did feel the same way about Music as you describe, it should grow some in me, to be good, but the song on the album i did have it hardest to consume is Procession, a song i now love, as it is very beautiful, but in start it needed a punch to me, and was to plain, , now i do epriciate how its done..!! I do like every song on the Album, and the thing i like most about the new album, is that its new Nightwish sound, without not being Nightwish, and that every song is diffrent.. I love this song Pan, celebrating the pale blue theatre stage (earth) and fantasy, all the posibilities the world can offer mankind.. its yours to write..

So happy to see you again my special friend. Every time I hear one of Tuomas' piano intro's, I imagine opening a music box and an image dancing in my imagination like some beautiful ballerina. I totally agree with your comment about each song being unique in its own way. The only theme I hear running throughout this CD is the vocal melodies during the verses. Almost all of them have a very up and down quality to the melody construction. I think it is called "melismatic" which refers to a style of singing first started in 900 AD and culminating in the Boroque era in which a single syllable of text is sung carried through many notes. Is this not a style used in religious chanting? At 15:36 in your reaction video right after the final words of the last chorus "To Enter", did you notice the background behind the flying chess pieces? It was the image in stone of a ancient king or god holding some type of sceptre and sitting on a throne. Above this image is a stone carving that looks like a Greek god staring straight ahead. There also seemed to be a lot of dominoes showing either 7 or 5? I wonder if we should be watching these small details to gain insight into this song? I am sure you noticed the book flashing by with the title "Fairy Tales", and I see some playing cards with a Crow, an Owl, and I am searching for one with a Dove. Have you heard the song "The Crow, the Owl, and the Dove" by Nightwish on the "Imaginaerum" CD. It is beautiful. Back to this song, There are so many images and backgrounds to this video. Is there meaning to all of these or are they simply random? I really love this song and feel it is about mankind discovering imagination. Imagination can be a dark place for many people. It can add a very exciting and stimulating aspect to every day life. I can't wait to her your analysis my friend. Always a great pleasure to spend some quality time with you! Be well and I will see you for the analysis. I hope you get a large response to your invitation. Then, something wicked their way came Showed a way to the Great Escape Evoke the worlds, sparked the brain An ape in awe before a door - (The door to the human minds imagination?)

Beautiful new insights and ideas. I took few notes and questions I carry with me. I am certain of one thing, on the table, you find books, film rolls, and so many other thing. I said it earlier : the creative team behind these 'lyrics' videos did a fantastic job in encapsulating a vision that we can find in the words. I am lost for words, here. Not sure I've seen anything like that before.

@@GuylainPrince I agree with you. I also noticed all of the (empty) film reels? There are so many images going by, it is hard to keep up with them. However, the question remains, do they have anything to do with the song or are they just trivial connections to draw your attention? One additional question for you. What was the thing with the Black pawns nears the ending crushing the other (invisible) chess pieces? It also seemed that when the chess pieces were shown that all of the white pieces were tipped over except for the white queen? I am headed to your analysis very soon and am anxious to hear your opinion. Be well my friend. Peace.

Grands mercis Axel !

Bienvenue!

The way Tuomas writes "weaves a multi-coloured thread" into a tapestry, each song a different route, which is challenging for Floor (she loves a challenge). "Phew!" Animated Chess Pawns, (homage to Pink Floyd, The Wall, animated marching hammers?) A pale blue theatre, (Carl Sagan, "Pale blue dot, that's us, Earth"). Night by a playwright? Paix!

I will just say that this is probably my favorite of the new songs I've heard yet ("Endlessness" is the one I haven't, and will probably refrain from it until my copy of the album arrives, finally - to have that crowning impression for last). Yes, the instrumental track here is so powerful I want to jump with every beat - I admit that would require some really fast movement on my part! :D The rhythm to which those chess kings smash the pawns is downright ominous, but catchy as sin! While the vocals are so tricky (misleading?) it is endearing. One is apt to listen on repeat only to make sure what they are hearing is real. I guess you may be on point about mischievous Pan playing his little games with human imagination - yours and ours. :)))
@GuylainPrince
@GuylainPrince 4 жыл бұрын
Yup ! This song is - simply said - leaning to 'name our fears', so that our words become 'shelters'. By opening the door of Imagination, we are able to reimagine our 'home', our world. Did you notice how the games on the table just 'fly around' ? By the imagination, the cards are 'reshuffled' - or any other game by the way. Imagination is a way to see differently and create it anew. Even a new world. The power of the night to reinvent ourselves.

As a former drummer (I have done my homework) you noticed Kai's drumming there. Mr Kai Hahto is a very experienced drummer and drumming teacher, but his appearance is totally different than Jukka Nevalainen's. Jukka was very showy , but Kai is like a robot. Both are good and very professional. This track has many refers to the literature, movies etc, that you maybe don't find them all ( as I didn't either but Patrol Gaming found so many). Some of them are almost cliches. The song itself is almost Emppu's show. He said at the countdown video, that this is so hard an old man to play live that it will end a PANcake. I doubt that. Looking forward to your analysis.

I found what I was looking for during my reaction vid. There is a beast of drummer in Canada, his name is Paul Brochu. This guy is absolutely proficient, perfection every single take (studio) or show. The sound techs LOVE him. He does not need any compressor : his sound is perfectly stable. I would LOVE to talk to the sound tech of Nightwish. I suspect that Kai is the Metal version of Paul Brochu. That would be the greatest compliment I could ever give to Kai !

Donc, seule option en show : backing tracks !

Kai, this is such an honour. I ask myself a question, constantly, since I began my journey through this album. I got the impression, by watching your live performances, that you are a very steady player. Is it a false impression or is that really you? In other words, are you aware if the techs in the studio and/or in the shows have to use a lot a 'compression' to stabilize your strikes? My personal impression is : a limiter would be enough with you. You are that steady. And thanks for the nice comments about my videos. It is a blend of artistic appreciation, admiration and love for words/music. I do my best anyway. No conceit, here.

If you look closely, towards the end, you will see me listening very closely to the voices. I had exactly the same thougt : how can they perform that in a show?!? I always interpreted the first lines of the song to be about the introduction of written language and the growth of literacy. "Then, something wicked their way came, showed the way to the great escape" seems to be saying that the human imagination, aided by the powerful muse that is the written word, can offer an escape from the troubles of daily life. I'm am unsure of why exactly this is called "wicked". Clearly it is a reference to the line in Macbeth; we have seen already one Shakespeare reference in this album at the end of Shoemaker (though that can also be thought of as a reference to Eugene Shoemaker's epitaph); it is not strange to see another. But why wicked? I can only guess that Tuomas means the escapism offered by the human imagination in the form of books or games is wicked in that by distracting is from our daily troubles it can also distract us from more important global issues, and allow us to go through our lives without addressing things that need to be addressed. "Evoke the worlds, sparked the brain. An ape in awe before a door" clearly, in my mind, refers again to books. The first line, "evoke the worlds" is about the ability of storytelling to take you away, mentally, to other worlds--worlds that exist only within the stories. "Sparked the brain" is pretty simple; good storytelling is intellectually stimulating. It sparks in us a desire for more, to find out what other worlds might exist in other stories, worlds which we have never even imagined ourselves. "An ape in awe before a door" is likewise simple; the ape is us, is humans, before we are introduced to the infinite possibilities of written and spoken language, and the door is the first page of a book, or the first line of a story spoken aloud, that first bit of a new fantastical story that leads us on its journey, that door into the new world which awaits us between the pages of that book, or in the words of that tale. Passing through that door we cease to be mere apes, and we begin to be Human. Written language, and sophisticated spoken language are, after all, much of what differentiates humanity from nature's other creations.
@GuylainPrince
@GuylainPrince 4 жыл бұрын
I suggest that the title "Pan" is the clue for "wicked" ! In fact, Pan has been there, in this album, and will be there again. As for the spark : I suggest to you the fact that there is an "initial spark", like written in many sonfs by Tuomas. How does that happen, the first time? Like in endlessness and EFMB.
@georgefer8923
@georgefer8923 3 жыл бұрын
"an ape in awe before a door" is a pretty clear reference to "2001, a space odyssey". Watch the movie (it's in the first 15 minutes of it) or read the book if you haven't already and you'll see it without any doubt. That being said, your interpretation is quite imaginative and can be accepted.

Hello Guylain Prince OFM Where do I start...I have seen all your Nightwish reactions. Great every time. I was looking forward to your reaction to PAN in the hope that you might discover some of the allusions to film and literature. There are sooo many of them in this song. I'm sure you've discovered some of them. As I wrote in another reaction video, I want to unravel the whole thing a bit. 1. winds will be named is an allusion to Patrick Rothfuss' book The name of the wind. Which Toumas has read. The Kingslayer trilogy. 2. to fallen stars, to there and back might be a reference to J.R.R. Tolkiens Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit. Bilbo writes a book with the title There and back again. 3. Tír na nÓg (Old Irish: Tír na n-Oc - tʲiːɾˠ n̪ˠə ˈn̪ˠoːɡˠ freely translated about Land of Eternal Youth) is one of the most famous mystical places of the afterlife in Irish-Celtic mythology. 4. A pale blue theatre stage: our earth. 5. Something wicked this way comes is a quote from the first scene of the fourth act of the drama "Macbeth" by William Shakespeare. 6. The title of the song itself: In ancient Greek religion and mythology, Pan is the god of the wild, shepherds and flocks, nature of mountain wilds, rustic music and impromptus. 7. Snow Glass Apples is a short story written by Neil Gaiman, a retelling of Snow White. 8. The Sea Lady is a story written by H.G. Wells. 9. Maybe the line an ape in awe before a door is an allusion to Arthur C. Clark's 2001 Space Odyssey when the Great Monolith appears But I am not sure about that. This song is pure genius...as always. 10. Keystone Earth is a reference to The Dark Tower series from Stephen King. Thanks to all who helped to unravel the whole thing.

You found my own weakness : I get little if none of the fantasy/horror references of Pan. So, yes, I could not understand many of them. You help me, here, to appreciate the song even more. Thanks! Have a great year!

@@GuylainPrince You're welcome. The song Pan is like little treasure for me (literarily speaking). If you can appreciate the song even better now, my task is done. Happy New Year to you too.

Floor here in this song reminds me of an Epica song onley floor is faster, Is Rap Metal a term ?

In French, Rap would refer to the ability to say the words - sometimes rapidly - without melody. Hear she does all this ... on insanely difficult melodies. She's incredible !

If you want to listen and see Kai Hahto in action before Nightwish, you really should react to his former band's, Wintersun's, perhaps the most famous song Sons of Winter and Stars. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/art9qq-pq7Svg2Q.html

Nice reaction. Ya, difficult song to sing. Many shifts of keys and tones. And little repetition in the lyrics. Nightwish are modern bards. Telling stories on music. I stronly believe that this album would not have worked with Tarja, even though she has a great voice too (she sang a beautiful, and my favorite, german version of Ave Maria).

Did you notice how everything on this album is complex, but sounds simple at time. Very well crafted, in my opinion.

@@GuylainPrince Indeed. A group of very talented, skilled and smart musicians. They remind me of Queen, smart musicians who also looked for new concepts and sounds.
