Spontaneous reaction to the song "Evolve", in two versions (studio-lyrics and live) by the Mexican hard rock and metal band "The Warning". These three sisters (17 to 21 yo) are nothing short of being phenomenal. Come and listen to a truly different sound, a unique point of view expressed in the lyrics, and musicianship beyond their respective age. Come with me and discover the 6 songs of their last EP (Mayday). Six songs, six weeks, six videos. In the centre part of the video, there is an analysis of the lyrics and of the song.

Again another good analysis of a song by The Warning, just complementary saying that Ale and Dany are Orange artists, and the studio where they recorded the sessions is Victoria Records in the girls' hometown, Monterrey. Paradoxically, in Mexico they have not been valued by the traditional media, television, radio and press.

@@GuylainPrince There are many factors, some of them are: They made it clear to many musicians who claim to do Rock that what they were doing was not Rock and therefore they attack them. The media are generally in complicity with these musicians and do not want to generate opinions about what is Rock and what is not. In a country where misogyny still prevails, The Warning are women and even worse they started as girls and they play good Rock. It has bothered many groups and record companies that they did not need anyone to make their music and translate it into 1 EP and 2 LPs independently and transcend beyond Mexico. They have aroused much envy from the entire music industry in Mexico. And that they sing in English, in every interview in Mexico, they practically beg them to only do songs in Spanish. Fortunately, they do not allow themselves to be influenced by anyone and as long as the doors are opening in other countries they will continue along the path they are tracing, for now they have already announced that this year they will be at two Rock festivals in the USA, they have their tour of a month for the USA and they have already announced that this year they will also go to Colombia, plus what is added.

@@CarlosRivas-cw5wu También desde finales de los años 80's los medios de comunicación en complicidad con las disqueras vendieron en México el concepto de Rock en tu Idioma y desde mi punto de vista fue una tragedia para el Rock hecho en México, ya que vendieron grupos y solistas que no tocaban Rock como si fueran Rock, que tocan cualquier ritmo, menos Rock, en el mejor de los casos algunos hacían Pop Rock influenciados por todo el Pop Rock importado de Argentina, pero la mayoría de los mal llamados gurús del Rock en México tocan lo que yo llamo "Cumbia Pop Alternativa"

And this another reason I admire TW . Latin america is a cultural stronghold so strong that not even R&B, Rap, Hip-hop, English sang pop cannot make a dent in it. Is a world that has produced such such rich, exceptional and full number of musical rhythms and genres: salsa, merengue, bachata, son, cumbia, ballenato, danzon, mambo and the list goes on and on that along with so many cultural musical regional rhythms and genres specially in Mexico. Then there is another set of extremely deeply rooted socio, cultural and political I'd say circumstances (take Narcicista for instance and you have one small sample of the set, very deeply rooted in a anti I'd say Anglo sentiment, here using Anglo on purpose since there is another world that could be used) that for the vast majority of the Anglo world are completely out of the grasp unless a real good extensive research is done. We have to understand that TW say phenomenon is exceptional in every bit because it happened in a context of a Latin American incredibly deep, vast and diverse contradictory, sureal sometimes, socio cultural pot.

This is their masterpiece, musically, the riff, the drumming, the vocal harmonies, and lyricalwise… this scream in the bridge for me shows the pain of evolving, improving, get your ass up, try and error, never give up, evolve! Knew you would like it ;o) - XXI Century Blood is the title song from their first album - the video is superb and will make you think twice about today's society - and the lyrics will blow your mind. Coming from mid-teens at the time they are more than excellent. I recommend. Another great and funny song from them - their first in spanish - is Narcissista - I also highly recommend.

The words I remembered straight away: "I'll show you what it means to change"... For me, it is the heart of the song. Ominous in context, although could be read as liberating in another setting. One thing for sure, you don't mess with that woman / person in catharsis. She is no more just an invisible vessel. Good and memorable riff, a very delicate solo too. They have a future! Will they own the future?.. P. S.: After listening to the filmed version - I must say (or repeat, as I think I said it before) I love their passion, especially in the person of Paulina! Her runs across the kit (e. g. in the chorus) are exquisite! Very good, "full" acoustic for the guitars, too, great site. They clearly have found their "sweet spot"... except is it not "sweet" in the regular meaning of the word! Hey, I love it, too. :)))

I had to laugh a little when you said "I would prefer one phrase to state clearly what they thought...". I do not think we will get that ever. Part of their style is to ask the question and let the listener think and decide for themselves. I really like that. They have stated, especially on the Queen of the Murder Scene album, that they like leave a little mystery so you can figure out what the song means for you rather than for them. For me, that demonstrates a tremendous level of intelligence and artistry. This is just another reason why I got hooked on this band.

Ha ha ha ! Well, I did not say : I would like one sentence that would remove all mystery and give a univocal meaning to the song. This ambivalence is a quality within a framework that is resolved, maybe, somewhere else. With age, they will find the need to express opinion. for now, yes, they might want to stay "open" to all their fans. Poetic images can be, at the same time, saying something clear and in a symbolically open way. Just stating an opinion, here.

Nice! Pau told us that this was inspired by a Netflix docuseries called Unnatural Selection which was about the risks of gene editing and humans getting involved in their own evolution. The live session was shot in Victoria Records Studio in Monterrey, Mexico.

The girls talked a little bit about writing this song. Dany and Ale were working on some riffs and bass lines for a 7/8 count (is how Dany described that part of the song) and Pau was playing around with some possible drum fills for what they were playing when the line _I'm not in danger, I'm the danger_ came to Pau as a possible lyric for the song. The girls then continued to work on completing the song around that lyric and how it related to a documentary they had watched about the interplay of technology with human evolution.

Las Hermanas Villarreal comentearon lo siguiente en una entrevista respecto a la letra de esta canción : “Escribimos «Evolve», sobre la peligrosa obsesión de la humanidad por evolucionar”, comentan las chicas de The Warning. “Y cómo a veces esa evolución nos lleva a dejar lentamente nuestra humanidad atrás. ¿Esta evolución deshumanizadora es correcta o incorrecta?”. Ellas hicieron esta reflexión después de ver un documental sobre este tema en Netflix. Espero le sea de utilidad la información. Saludos!! desde México. Pd. The official videos are fun because they are always so well produced. However, I prefer these live sessions because the musical quality is just as good, in fact the harmonies come out better and you can see who is singing them. The live sessions also show that the girls can actually sing and play. Too many things can be manipulated in the studio these days. I'm sure others have suggested it, but it would be very interesting to watch you go through The Queen of the Murder Scene concept album they wrote when they were 18, 16, and 13 years old. They introduced the album back in November, 2018 at a concert at Lunario CDMX. They put the whole thing together themselves and it is amazing. I will never figure out how they did it. They were kids.

I always felt like that, when playing a 7/4 ; as if there was "a missing beat" and/or step. And I know the Warning just enough to know that nothing is there for nothing. There is a reason behind. I am AMAZED on how Paulina is eloquent and completely fluid in her drum playon on a 7/4. Both the patterns and the fills are on point. Never seen that for a 19 yo drummer. She is exceptional!

@@GuylainPrince Yes. I started playing drums at 8yo and played into my 20s. I played in concert, marching and Jazz bands and Orchestra, from elementary school through college. One song I remember with an odd time signature was the Superman Theme from the original movie. It was in 12/8 time, with many odd triplet patterns on snare. I also played in some rock bands as a teen. Granted, it is easier to play odd rhythms that you yourself create, than to cover other drummers. But, Paulina is able to do both very well. It also helps that she is able to do something that I never was able to do, which is practice 5 hours a day for years. There is just no substitute for practice, no matter the talent level. It really has allowed her to perfect her technique, precision, transition speed and confidence in her playing. She is now at the point I never achieved. Her limbs just do what she thinks, without having to concentrate on it, if that makes sense. An example on a new Warning song is the drum part during the verses on "Disciple". She said she had a difficult time with it while also singing. Listen carefully to it and you will see why. It's a really cool rhythm she is playing. A good example of the 7/4 time signature is Pink Floyd's "Money" from Dark Side of the Moon. It doesn't sound that difficult to a listener, but trying to play it on drums, it's a different story trying to get all 4 limbs into an odd time signature. LOL. Love your analysis. Keep them coming!

@@krash66 Money (and Solsbury Hill) feel more like alternating 3 and 4 beat measures (Money only has sections in 7, while Solsbury Hill has one extra 4-beat measure in the chorus). This is more of a pure 7 and is much more difficult for me to count.

Excellent analysis. The word you sought, referring to the clock counting down, is, in English, countdown. You spoke of a catharsis. Indeed, making rock music is a catharsis for Paulina.

Ah Guylain! What a joy to view this reaction and analysis, which by the way, is the one in which we coincide the most. I would just like to add a couple of little fun facts. Pau obviously did not do the actual scream while filming the official video, but she was so intense, that she tore a jaw muscle performing. She does not know how to do things half way. The other is that they filmed the official video in just two hours by means of a dozen and a half iPhones. That says a lot about their team's professionalism and innovative ways. I loved you teasing us by promising a seventh song. I bet The Warning Army will be buzzing about which one it might be! Thank you.

Han tenido un par de buenas entrevistas donde han tratado temas bien técnicos y musicales pero hasta ahora no hay una donde se profundice en sus letras. Thanks! Like many, I first interpreted the lyrics on a more literal, personal level. After hearing Paulina's explanation of the inspiration for "Evolve", I realized that the lyrics are much more abstract. Under any interpretation, "Evolve" is one of the most sonically brilliant rock tunes in recent memory!

In your section on what is evolve in this song, I think you rwally got it right. I would add that in leaving the question open at the end, instead of stating a position and inviting you to agree with them, they ask you to think about it, and come to your own understanding of what "evolve" is.

I love your reactions, the meaning of the phrases is important, but I also think there is a deep social meaning in their songs, I don't know if they really know how deep and strong her lyrics will become in the future in a world who claims for a change. I simply think that... they are real musicians. They want to do music, and great music. They do not satisfy themselves with "ready-made-mainstream" music. No. They do music the way they like it and with a lot of professionalism.

Small correction, Paulina confirmed in a video tutorial about this song, that it is in fact in 7/8, not 7/4. Not a big deal, but thought you would like to know. Also the word you were looking for "Compte à rebours" is Countdown, I think. Also as you seem to know your way around a studio, you may be interested by the videos below. Thanks for the info. Well, the difference between a 7/4 and a 7/8 is not all that easy to find, especially in a middle-tempo. In this case, I am pretty sure it is a 7/4. But, if Pau said it, it might be that she had built it, as the drummer, in her head that way, but for the other musicians, it is played and felt like a 7/4. As a drummer, it is the way I would play it as well, but because her fills seems to be in another time signature, I would tend to think... that we are both right!

I was just about to point out the 7/8 time but seen you already did, so cool. Dany and Ale are going to have to update their gear videos because the had gotten some really cool stuff since. Pau did get a new drum kit for touring, same setup as the brown DW Drums and Sabian Cymbals but in white (The kit she played in Evolve and Choke actually). The kits she used in ES, Martirio and Disciple where rentals.

I love this song, it makes me feel like I'm in an action movie, it's gripping and full of suspense. It's another awesome song by The Warning.

@@dannys6976 Not that we know of anyway. 😄 It would be a complicated relationship with all their traveling in the near future. It might on the other hand give a lot of input regarding songs about relations, but they can get clues from books and movies as well.

this is my first time watching you...came across my Facebook feed (a fan shared this video); interesting tidbit...this rock group is not just the Villarreal sisters (the entire family works as a concise unit); their father is manager & bought them a studio for practicing, writing, and initial recording of song parts; their mother is their lyrical proofreader/translator (being Mexican their first language is Spanish and their mom makes sure the English lyrics clearly & concisely present what the band wants to convey)

The ladies call their studio “The Warning Cave “ and it’s actually a very tiny room in the basement of their parent’s house, where they live in Monterrey. There are numerous videos on their yt channel playing and practicing there. In front of them ( what you usually don’t see in the videos) is a large mirror, so they also practice their stage performance in that room. Btw their mother has been the proofreader for their spanish songs, not their English ones, at least as far as I know. They ( mostly Pau) write the lyrics directly in English. Pau has said on instagram that she writes in English because it’s easier for her. Although spanish is her mother tongue, she finds it very complicated to write lyrics in Spanish because of the much more complicated grammar.

Their best song IMHO. Just so good and hearing it Live? Well, all I can tell you is the last time I felt the way I did when I heard this at the Rockville festival was back in ‘89 on the Metallica Justice tour. So much to love about this song but the breakdown just melts your face and Pau’s scream is so primeval- almost like a banshee! Thanks for the breakdown and analysis 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘

The build up of that song is insane. Everything is constructed in a way that this song is extremely effective. Perfect focus and execution... Melodically, Choke is for me a little superior.

Ce qui ne nous tue pas , rend plus. malheureusement, ce sont les épreuves qui nous font grandir, changer, évoluer. il y a du positif dans toute situation. je serais bien incapable de répondre à leur question car bien souvent on ne s'aperçoit pas soi-même que l'on a changé , ce sont les autres qui nous le font remarquer. Cette chanson est vraiment excellente, je vais continuer de les suivre moi-aussi

Evolve es una montaña rusa de adrenalina, tengo una página de música en Facebook y fue la canción #1 en el conteo anual de las canciones que más me gustaron en 2021, solo veo una enorme carrera llena de éxito para estas chicas, lo tienen muy merecido, gran análisis Guylain , de lo mejor que hay en KZfaq en reacciones 👍👍👍👍

Excelente análisis, felicidades; me parece que no se puede adentrar en las canciones de esta banda sin dejar de sentir lo que transmiten, logrando que las emociones se apoderen de los que las escuchamos, son increibles, tengo la fortuna de seguirlas desde su inicio y es satisfactorio ver en lo que se están convirtiendo, tienen toda mi admiración, sin perder de vista, el hermoso desempeño que han tenido sus padres en su formacion, son divertidas, apasionadas, respetuosas y muy profesionales. My first reaction : being an ex-drummer, I am not a fan of electronic music. BUT, I have to say that this artist, I find something unique in him. I am VERY interested with the topic (Gods and Gold) and æstetically : there is something very rich in him. Really. I will continue listening to him in the coming weeks. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm a sucker for black and white vids. Plush made a great video combining color and b&w; loved it. Moriah and the harmonies in the song are awesome. Both The Warning and Plush have the ability to combine melodies and heavy riffs into their sound and still have their own distinct signature. Often these are the bands that are in it for the long run because they appeal to a large audience; as we both hope☺. I don't know if you know it but Dany gave a shoutout to Plush in one of her recent DanyDays. It's a matter of time these bands will join the stage as protaganists of the new generation. It would be very interesting to see Moriah sing the part of Alessia in ES (Blacklist style) live; it could provide for an epic version.

I have seen the majority of metal bands from the late seventies till late ninetees and to be honest, a lot them were not so great live as on their records; these women are. Them together on one ticket would give the competition something to think about. Slash has his work cut out lol. Have a great weekend sir!
