Spontaneous reaction to the song "Martirio", in two versions (studio-lyrics and live) by the Mexican hard rock and metal band "The Warning". These three sisters (17 to 21 yo) are nothing short of being phenomenal. Come and listen to a truly different sound, a unique point of view expressed in the lyrics, and musicianship beyond their respective age. Come with me and discover the 6 songs of their last EP (Mayday). Six songs, six weeks, six videos. In the centre part of the video, there is an analysis of the lyrics and of the song.
The Warning : Alejandra (17 yo), bass guitar and back vocals; Paulina (19 yo) : drums and lead singing; and Daniela (21 yo) : guitars and lead singing.

I must commend you for an excellent analysis. One of the few reactions that I think have nailed down the song. The beginning lyrics of the chorus are wrong, Dany is singing "En tu martirio torpe" instead of "En tu martirio, ahogate", the error is also on the official video page, so it's understandable why the mistake. Also, the "give yourself away" translation is quite off, it's more like "surrender yourself" as in "give yourself to your martyrdom". In my personal translation, I opted for "suffocated by your own hands", as it seems to me fits more with the vibe of self-inflicted, though when you spoke that part you used that phrasing as well "by your own hands". The phrase "It's your destiny, surrender" I think would fit better (in terms of meaning) with "It's your destiny, give into it" even if it doesn't sound as well. Surrendering in my mind implies that you've done so reluctantly. "Entregate" is more like "devote yourself to something", which would imply to me a dedication and desire to pursue something that's completely missing from "surrendering". For example, a wife/husband would "entregarse" to their spouse, they're not surrendering, they're devoting themselves to one another. The phrase "in the darkness, you will be lost", though literal, it would be more clearly translated as "in the darkness, you will lose yourself". Because "perderas" is literally "losing yourself", and it gives it a stronger meaning that by being lost in the darkness you are really losing yourself to that foolish martyrdom. The last line is basically "stupid martyr say goodbye to your life", though more literally it would be "to your life, foolish martyr, say goodbye". The phrase "Es mejor morir en manos de un adiós" is a complicated one, how I interpret it is that it's more akin to "It's best to die in the embrace of a goodbye", which implies a level of care or longing for something that's been lost. Much like you would hold onto something that was once precious to you, in this case the life that has been forsaken to the misguided martyrdom.

@@GuylainPrince Thank you, I'm incredibly flattered by your words. I'm so glad you gave this song its due, since it's in Spanish its meaning and message get often overlooked and it's one of the songs I've really enjoyed in their new EP. The way Dany sings through the words in Spanish, she breathes into them great meaning.

My general feeling is the song mocks people who wallow in their own despair because they feel more comfortable as victims. I’m reminded of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven,” wherein a deeply depressed and heartbroken man decides to speak to a bird that lands on his windowsill. Turns out the bird can speak, but only a single word: “Nevermore.” This guy quickly picks up on this and asks over and over (in different ways) if there’s any hope that his lost love could ever return, KNOWING what answer he’ll receive. Some part of him WANTS that answer because he feels that’s where he belongs - in pain and despair. This song (to me) basically says: “We all go through things. You’re not special. Pain is a part of life, but we find a way to push through the lows and enjoy the highs. You can do the same if you try.”

Hello my dear Gyulain. I would suggest that the last portion of the song could be interpreted as follows: You have to learn from those that have suffered and you might get the understanding that if you are to continue suffering, without trying to find the exit, it is better to simply say good bye to your life, because you would be a fool by living such a pointless existence. Composing rock music in Spanish is extremely difficult because of the limitations of our 5 vowels sound. You can sense a certain friction and forced singing in most songs. It is like trying to compose mariachi music in English! Yet, this song is perfect! For our Latino sensibilities, the pain and the drama of the whole composition resonates deeply. I am willing to go so far as to say that it is one of the best rock power balads ever done in this language. It does not compete with Evolve in my heart, but it does have a lot of real estate there. Thanks again for another wonderful moment in your company.

I believe that this song basically states that we as individuals need to be responsible for our actions and our lives, and not be drawn down into the abyss of feeling sorry for ourselves. We need to learn from the trials and sacrifices of those who came before us and become resilient to the evils of the world around us. It's all about GRIT and having a growth mindset as opposed to a fixed mindset which in the end can lead to self destruction.

Great analysis, I think your interpretation is very accurate. And about the "drowning"... in spanish it's a recurrent idea to compare the anguish, the pain, the desperation of a situation with being drowning. Sometimes this can be true for a really horrible and extreme situation, you can really feel like you're all alone in the middle of the ocean drowning. But some other times it's just like the old saying "Ahogarse en un vaso de agua" which means "To drown in a glass of water". Spanish speakers use this idiom to refer to someone who gets overwhelmed by ordinary circumstances. The person may not see it, but the situation they are in is not as dire as they think. In other words, they can’t see that they’re not alone in the ocean, simply in a glass of water. I think this applies to what the song says in the lines "You suffocated yourself with your own hands", "In your martyrdom, drown yourself".

Another excellent analysis. I would add a couple more things that make this song a great musical work, of course from my point of view, from someone with little musical knowledge and from someone who has listened to Rock in Spanish for many years. Given the grammatical structure of the Spanish language and the musical structure of Rock, it is very difficult to get the lyrics of the songs to be heard well due to the pronunciation of the words with emphasis on a vowel, and the girls of The Warning managed to make their song assemble well both lyrics and music and the message is understood. The other fact to highlight is that the sound they achieved with the song sounds like Rock done in English, which is very rare to achieve. In Rock in the Spanish language there are times when the sound works and on other occasions the lyrics work, but achieving both is remarkable. With their first song in Spanish (Narcisista) they succeeded, but with Martirio they surpassed themselves by far and surpassed many Rock bands that have tried. Other bands have managed to make the lyrics sound good but it is because they fuse Latin music with Rock and many times Latin music dominates over Rock.

One other thing I wanted to mention. Several years ago the band did a local TV appearance with their full kit, BUT since it was a relatively low-budget morning show, they were asked to simulate playing and lip-sync. They did it. Once. It wasn’t an enjoyable experience. 🙂 Ever since, they’ve done these kinds of acoustic versions instead so they can actually play live within the confines of the studio.
@alexj9603

Exactly. But while this reduced acoustic setting worked quite well for some songs from the QOTMS album, it doesn't work too well for Martirio, because the long instrumental parts are so essential for the song.

Wonderful, as usual Guylain. This is my second favorite song on the EP (after Evolve) - it is filled with musical "surprises", the arrangement is epic, and the lyrics are compelling. One thing: I prefer the translation of " Martir tonto" as "Foolish Martyr", rather than "Stupid Martyr". I think Foolish Martyr is softer - less harsh. And even though Foolish Martyr might be a bit condecending, it is not nearly as demeaning as Stupid Martyr. I haven't heard any of TW say what their exact thoughts were when writing this line, but I hope my interpretation of the phrase lines up with theirs.
@GuylainPrince
@GuylainPrince 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, that is why I wrote "foolish", but it is in the sense of "stupid" : you are the creator of your own situation... That is why I said it very "lightly", with a big smille. It was not a HEAVY "Stupid", which is demeaning, yes.
@jameschisholm7131

@gmespia
@gmespia 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Guylain, your translation is way better than the one displayed on the lyrics. It's interesting to me how just a word can change the whole meaning of this song, at least in Spanish. I mean 'Tu vida triste, mártir tonto, di adiós' vs 'A tu vida triste, mártir tonto, di adiós' (this is how it's translated in English). In the first case means (in the context of this song) 'You don't need to be a fool and keep suffering, kill yourself', in the second case means 'don't be a fool, stop suffering, and leave that unhappy situation once and for all'. I like the second interpretation best but for instance some Spanish friends of mine were confused the first time listening to this song about the true meaning of it. See ya!

Love this analysis! Bilingual, so I see some minor shortcomings in the translation (Google?). "Te asfixiaste con tus propias manos" means "you choked/suffocated yourself with your own hands." Emphasis on "yourself." Self-martyrdom. Your excellent interpretation got it anyway. Ahógate (ah-OH-gah-tay) is dual meaning in Spanish - drown or choke (ahóga...) yourself (...te). "Drown" isn't inappropriate here - as with "drown your sorrows." That said, I might go with "choke yourself on your martyrdom." In the section that begins "Ya no hay vuelta atrás," I wonder if the next two lines don't connect directly, like "there's no turning back if you decide to be a martyr at your own hands. It's not like there won't be fire at your feet, but your tendency to be the martyr will leave you lost in the darkness." "Tu vida triste" isn't "to your sad life," it's just "your sad life." "Mártir tonto" is actually "foolish martyr" - tonto can be a noun or an adjective, but it's an adjective here - and hammers home the notion that self-martyrdom is foolish. So, "your sad life, foolish martyr" is how "say goodbye" is directed at the martyr, connecting to "better to die in the hands of a goodbye." The song is hopeful in that it insists there's an alternative, but you have to say goodbye to your self-martyrdom.

To me, the "fire at your feet" is not necessarily inside the person, it can also be a fire they have to walk through. And it's everywhere, so you can't escape from it. Interestingly, the official music video shows Dany inside a ring of fire while singing this line. I also liked the parallels you found with other songs in this EP, especially Choke. I remember seeing a lyric video of Choke with translations into Spanish. The first line of the chorus was translated was "déjame ahogarme". It uses the same word as in "Martirio". And I don't know if it's intentional, but the Spanish word "ahogarse" contains the word "hogar" which means "home". Coincidence or not?
