Spontaneous reaction to the songs / musical pieces "Day Sixteen - Loser" and "Day Seventeen - Accident?" from the album "Ayreon - The Human Equation"" in two versions (Lyrics video and live video ). The whole album will be covered : 1 hour and 40 minutes of music, divided in block of 10-13 minutes. Ten videos / ten weeks in the music of this exceptional artist.
According to Wikipedia, "Ayreon is a musical project by Dutch songwriter, singer, musician and record producer Arjen Anthony Lucassen. Ayreon's music is described as progressive rock, progressive metal and power metal sometimes combined with genres such as folk, electronica, experimental and classical music. The majority of Ayreon's albums are dubbed "rock operas" (or "metal operas") because the albums contain complex storylines featuring a host of characters, usually with each one being represented by a unique vocalist."

Day sixteen: Loser was actually the first ayreon song I ever heard as a teenager, and started my ayreon universe journey. It is fantastic storytelling with a touch of chaos.

Ditto, Devins vocals and the tension between the instruments and vocals first drew me into the Ayreon rabbithole. After that I just had to know what it was all about.

I've been watching your videos since you started on The Human Equation, and wow has it been so enjoyable to listen with you! I've been an Ayreon fan for maybe nine years now, so it's been just delightful to hear your thoughts and spend time thinking about these songs on a much deeper than surface level. I would recommend you listen to Devin Townsend, and specifically either his Empath album or Ocean Machine (though all his work is tremendous). Devin Townsend is Rage in The Human Equation, and his albums showcase his talent in both musicality and meaning beautifully. Anyways, thank you for your time and sharing music with us! I look forward to your next video! :D

Another fantastic episode! I have enjoyed this journey from the beginning! I would like to share my interpretation of the line "killing it from afar, go tell it in a bar." The term "killing it" can be used to mean doing extremely well. The father takes pride in the fact that he has multiple exes all and that (in his eyes) his children are failures in order to make himself feel superior. Telling him to go tell it in a bar is saying to go get drunk and boast to anyone he can find to listen to him.

When you have such a sociopathic, egocentric, sadistic father serving you nothing but pain since your earliest years, when you've only been living with agony for so many years, it does become the closest thing you have to a friend. When the only good thing you could cling to, the love of your wife, is stripped from you(note how the character of Love didn't have a single line on day 17)... Agony truly is your only friend. You have nothing left. Not even hope lies at the bottom of your own personal Pandora's box. Magnificent writing from Arjen Lucassen. He makes Me's life tragic, but completely believable. Me is a character that rings true. As someone that could actually exist. We are looking through important parts of the history of a person and seeing what pieces form the puzzle that is his life. Wonderfully told both through music and lyrics. And that is what sets Arjen apart from many other composers and makes him my personal favorite.

I missed a few but I'm so glad im back for this one because it's two amazing songs! As someone else said, "killing it" is a turn of phrase that means you're doing something really well. So my interpretation of Rage's lines are: Never! - I took this as complete rejection of his Father. Never again will he have power over him, and never will he try to be like his father again. Killing it from afar - I took this as a sort of sarcastic way, he's saying "oh yeah dad, you're really doing a great job" after his father basically reveals how much of a loser he really is and how proud he is of it. Go tell it in a bar - for me it was like he was telling his father to go find someone else willing to listen to and believe him, because Me was done with him. And for Accident?... I'm still watching the live reaction so maybe you mention it, but there's been a couple points in the past where the wife and the best friend were talking and said things like "do you think he saw? Do you think he knows?" And "does he cry/rage because of us?" And you weren't sure why those lines came up but with this song telling you the reason why the accident happened brings some potential clarity to them.

All of this makes a LOT of sense!!! A lot! Thanks. Let's see the rest of the album to answer this with clarity. But I have to say that, until now, this is the best explanation of those "cryptic words" !

Merci Guylain!! Im still enjoying this journey, its a intresting story unfolding, and the theatrical aspect of it is brilliant to, like i said in my comment last week, its not songs from this album i usaly listen to when i listen to Ayreon songs on my headphones, but that dosent mean im not enjoying this album journey here on youtube with you, the music makes more sense here, then in my headphones, ok, just to make that clear..lol a sidenote is i heard a interview with Arjen the other day, where he tell that Ayreon will make another live show in the future, sort of like this one i guess, proberly in 2023, ohh boy, would i like tickets to this show.. this happens extremly rarely right.. Also he say in the interview that what he work on right now, is actually a remix of a older double album called universal Migrator, well as he say he feelt he could make some songs sound better, adding some forgotten track sound samples and stuff, well typical Arjen that he want to perfect it..lol.. there is a few songs from this i look foreward to listten to in a new vesion for sure..

Somebody may have mentioned this but the character of Rage lyrics were written by the singer Devin Townsend, a critically acclaimed Canadian musican whos body of work spans almost 3 decades and almost 30 albums. I think the fact he wrote the lyrics for his part gave the song Loser a really different feel from the other songs and of course the instruments and composition made this track stand out in a great way. It was such a pleasure seeing you smile when you listened and the lyric analysis was on point as usual. Thank you one thousand times. Oh and I forgot to mention and praise the singer of Loser in the live version. His name is Michael Mills, an Australian singer and multi instrumentalist who has like a low C to high C vocal range. He's another musican everyone needs to hear.

My 5 cents: keyboard solo on the album version of Looser is performed by Ken Hensley (!) However there's also an official music video for this song where a different solo is performed by Joost, Arjen's friend. You may check it if you're curious. He used a synthesizer there instead of a hammond organ.

I love the idea that the car that was originally a prop related to a car accident has in day 17 changed to a metaphor of a broken heart.
@GuylainPrince
@GuylainPrince 2 жыл бұрын
In fact, I am pretty sure that it was intended. A "wretch" something is often an expression for a "wretched heart" or "soul". Hear the classic gospel song : Amazing Grace. And since the beginning of this journey, I said : they put [Me] , the character, in the car. Well... physically, he was in the bed, one floor up, but in his heart, he was "still in the wretch car". That is his heart. The symbolism is quite clear and effective!

Day 16, très iconique! Mike Mills est superbe dans les 2 versions live. Même si c'est très different à la version studio, j'aime les 3. J'ai toujours pensé que la silhouette du père est ce qui a provoqué l'accident. Au lieu du père, sa voiture a heurté un arbre.
@GuylainPrince
@GuylainPrince 2 жыл бұрын

I wonder if, in Day 17, there's an interesting note in Agony saying he's the oldest friend Me has ever known. Given it occurs at the same time as the narrative is implying that Me's self-destructive impulse was driven by witnessing an apparent hug and smile between his Wife and Best Friend. Though it's telling either way that Me finds pain and despair more familiar and accessible than simply talking to the supposed love of his life and best friend; his communication skills seemingly not well-developed.
@GuylainPrince
@GuylainPrince 2 жыл бұрын
An "old-friend" associated with memories, yes. Familiar, but painful. As for communication, no doubt, there was an important "lack" in the relations with his mother and wife. There is also a history of competition. And he thought, for a while, that he "lost" to his best friend his own wife. It is a complex situation.
@erickvermeulen9734
@erickvermeulen9734 2 жыл бұрын
Pity i missed the live broadcast. I guess seeing his wife in arms of another man made all childhood memories of his father making him feel unworthy come back:: loser. That gives the state of mind at 1 pm in the car, feeling lost and lonely and angry and incapable to handle his situation. Probably the doubts in the second song are about himself, he feels the floor sink away beneath him. Desperation. Michael Mills is live great as the father. Seems Ayreon lets often several instruments play the same tune.
@GuylainPrince
@GuylainPrince 2 жыл бұрын
Yup! The state of mind : the only rock of his life is in someone else's arms. Even if it was nothing, like the wife says, his "competitive mind" made him feel, yes, like a looser.

Great video as always. You should've used the live video for Loser from the same show as the rest (The Theater Equation). That version is better and more accurate to the story. Rage's lyrics are purposefully unclear (written by somebody else as well). Analyzing them is hard. I know, because I once worked on translating them into another language.
