Load PS2 Games From SMB Using DHCP Router Method and OPL Tutorial (2021)

Күн бұрынToday's tutorial I revisit how to share PS2 games over SMB so you can play them via OPL on a modded PS2, but instead of using a static ip address, we are going to use DHCP method instead.
DHCP is better since you get auto assignment of ip address to the PC and also the PS2, and I will show you how to setup the DHCP network settings in OPL to either use a IP address from the PC, or the PC system name. It's pretty cool, so check out the video and have fun gaming!

Hey, i have an scph 90004, i applied the mechapwn, but it can't read ps1 backups, isn't there something i can do? Otherwise mechapwn is useless on PAL.

Ha! I've been trying to do this for hours and kept getting connection error and all I was missing was put "GUEST" as the username. no tutorial I found tells you to do that your video was the only one, thanks so much it's working now :D

greetings from Germany, i am trying to get those games to work like 6 hours straight. finally this one Method worked for me. So I used my Laptop, connected wireless to the Router and my PS2 via LAN Cabel to the Router. i can´t believe that is actually working and how good. Thank u so much my Friend.

If I may add, can you use smb and hdd loading at the same time. I want to use the same smb server as my slims sometimes. I have popsstarterter setup on both my smb server and ps2 too btw. Using an official network adapter and whenever both are enabled, opl runs at like 5 fps, and they don't show up on the phat ps2. The hdd alone has 800gbs of games so that might be doing it to, ha. And this is with my smb properly configured just like it is on my slim, so I'm a bit confused. :)

This was the method that worked for me (thanks so much for your vids) but I needed to ask, has anyone else had an issue where the main wifi internet tends to dip and lag a bit here and there? I notice when I'm streaming or browsing the web everything seems to take a bit longer to load certain stuff while it's connected to the SMB ethernet port. I dunno why it would lag if I'm using the wifi instead of the ethernet port, but I'm guessing it's something to do with the internet network conflicts?

Is there any other alternatives of sharing other than smb 1.0? It's pretty old protocol and pretty much unsecure to enable and use on a modern pc (there was the wannacry ransomware incidence).

I know what you mean, maybe have a local android box or travel router or raspberry pi connected to the ps2, totally disconnected from the internet and play that way if smb share is your jam?

Is all network connections correct and the PC can ping ps2 properly? Then next step is making sure games are installed correctly. If USB works, then SMB shouldn't be too far off from working too

I got it working .But some games like Downhill Domination have some stuttering in the fmv's . Is there anything i can do to have it running without stuttering during fmv scenes? Some games i tried like Tony Hawk Donwhill Jam don't stutter at all during the fmv's. I am using a ps2 slim connected to router like in this video with opl 1.0 build .Any help would be much appreciated

I am not sure if it is opl that needs optimization or something else, like enabling one of those modes 1 through 6 that can help. Could be good question for the psx place forum or discord, but thanks for confirming that even with ethernet, certain game fmv's can still lag.

Thanks! Quick question regarding this method: do you still need to break down 4gb+ isos, as you do with FAT32 usb drives? Not clear to me since it's from your windows storage so it's in NTFS. Let me know? Thanks. I need to switch to SMB because I have a USB BT dongle in one port and need the second port to pair my DS3, so I can't use USB for games anymore, and in any case it's awfully slow.

As long as the SMB server (Windows, Linux, Mac) supports larger than 4GB files, there's no need to break them into smaller chunks. Just put the full size file on the SMB share and you're good to go. It's a great upgrade from USB loading!

Can you ping the ps2 from the pc? Let's start there. Also if using windows 10, smbv1 must be enabled.

I have a question though, does OPL let me play games outside my console's region? For example I have a PAL console but does it let me play NTSC-U games? I'm so new to softmodding and I'd like to know if all this is worth it.

I have the "300: Cannot connect to SMB server." message when using the NetBIOS method. I'm on Windows 11. Also, I don't get why "GUEST" is entered instead of "Everyone".

hello, great video, i've been playing PS2 using SMB from several years now and the only complain is that the FMVs goes kindda laggy, i have tried using USB 3.0 to "improve" the reading speed, however the "issue" persist, as I said it only happens during FMV however i would like to know if anyone else hs the same problem?

I'm a bit late, but PS2 USB ports are only USB 1.1. Doesn't matter how fast your flash drive is, the console itself is bottlenecked to the slowest possible file transfer speeds. That's why network loading is so much faster.

Following this video it should work if a mini router has usb port on it. I have a mini router and I haven't tried DHCP mode recently, or static ip address so maybe that be a good follow up tutorial

SMB 1.0 is missing in Turn Windows features on or off, can't find any way to enable it and when trying to turn it on manually in PowerShell it says it can't find the service

Yes, that is one way of doing it. But PC still needs to connect to the router via cable or wifi....or do a smb share on the router if it has a USB port.

thx for the vid i made it to load the games up with my old Tplink twd890n1 router but its realy realy slow i mean i takes 10min to load the game up for some reason trying to find a fix for it i can use cross over drictly to my pc ethernet port via static IP but getting vertical lines ""static noise"" on my LCD but the router dosnt cause that lines to pop so i resorted to try using my router as smb share for my games

can you help me get this to work using POPS with it? setting my ps2 settings in opl to DHCP instead of STATIC works, but if its not static i cant setup the ip config.dat in the pops quickstart guide for smb.

I don't have a NAS to setup and practice on, but if it allows SMB share and you got all login stuff correct, it should work. But it sounds like its more hassle than its worth here.

Either the game is fragmented, or the game is not compatible with smb, or it needs certain modes (i.e. mode 1 through 6) to be enabled.

So dude when i intended to play from internet connection instead usb or cd should I connect my ps2 with lan or modem-router (WiFi device) or my laptop which is would be smooth and fast my laptop connected to modem-router wired (to wifi device with lan) as same should i add another lan from router to ps2 or another lan laptop to ps2 which one is better also has most flawless experience i connected to (WiFi device) modem-router with wired lan to laptop so i prevent lag latency any stuff can happen over WiFi connection also if i connect it to routers wired to ps2 should i still download games to laptop storage either it wired to modem-router or laptop thx bud

I'm so sorry, this is a confusing comment and trying to understand what you are trying to say. Either method is fine if PS2 to modem/router, then to laptop, or laptop to PS2.

Works fine but my game freezes sometimes, the times really differ sometimes the games freeze after 30min and sometimes after 2h any idea what I can do? Playing rpg's where you aren't able to save that often makes this issue really bad for me

This I'm not really sure, should the game on the smb device be defragged? If you played the same game but from something else like usb, do you get into same random freezes?

I currently play my games through OPL and SMB from my PC and was wondering if its possible to update OPL through SMB? I bought a FreeMcboot memory card from ebay and it had OPL 1585-DB-TA-cea1d2a, but I kinda want to upgrade to OPL v1.1.0 .

Use ulaunchelf and copy and paste the latest opl file to the memory card. Then use fmcb reconfiguration and remap shortcuts to newest opl

I have free mcboot and have been ripping games from my fat PS2 disc drive to my internal 1TB HDD. I have version 1.966 and have ethernet cord run and all so I need to know if I can use ethernet to load games onto the HDD without having to use my disc drive in the PS2? Thanks for any info seems not to be an explanation of this on youtube but lots of people want to know how from what I have read.

Can you play your ps2 games if the pc that contains the game is turned off?

No because its loading the files from the PC. If you want to load it locally, then there are other creative solutions like using a router that has a usb port and share the game that way, or use rasperry pi or equivalent to host games over smb.

Not that I know of. SMB is pretty quick, so is internal hdd for fat ps2.

Man, thanks for the video, but every when i reset my ps2 to play a new game on the opl tab, appear to me "ERROR 311: DHCP SERVER ERROR" this as i if kind i've been lost the "signal" of ps2 DHCP. Sorry for english, i am from brazil and thanks for your video. Can you help about this ? every when i restart my ps2 to play a new game on the gametab of opl, appear that error, but during a gameplay i can play very well my games.

Maybe look into doing static IP address for the PS2 and see if that fixes your issues?

Dont use OPL betas for now. I spent half of the day trying to connect my ps2 to smb, error 300 all the time. Found out, it was the latest betas, they broke something and SMB just doesnt work on it.

Works great by using the IP method. However, I get a 300 “Can’t connect to SMB” error when using Netbios. My device’s name has the format DESKTOP-XXXXXXX, I wonder if it has anything to do with it.

the only thing i can think on is that my network adapter is broken.... im using a phat, i also was curious why in your settings you had a psone options. i have followed step by step using your instruction, maybe there is something ive just stuffed up i seriously have no idea tbh

This video happened to be using an OPL Daily Build, hence the ps1 tab icon. If your network has smbv1 enabled, your network sharing settings is all correct on the PC, then perhaps the network adapter is broken. I've seen that before from other users and when they replaced the adapter, smb games worked instantly. Can you ping the ps2 from the PC? If you can ping it, then I would think the network adapter is maybe ok

I should clarify the method here. Yes, I understand the concern of smbv1 and that is why Microsoft disabled it. Some people (including myself) can use something like a travel router or just a router connected to the ps2 and load the games from usb or over the network. If the router isn't connected to the internet, and its just your isolated network for game sharing, then you don't need to worry about ransomware or viruses on the network.

Hey dude, I followed both your SMB method videos and I can get my games to show up, but every one of them results in a black screen. I can guarantee the ISO's didn't get corrupted after I dumped the discs and I'm following every step exactly :/ I'm on an SPCH-77001 using freemcboot 1.966, and have tried multiple OPL builds. I would *really* appreciate some assistance here, I don't like the USB method because of the custscenes

@@ProjectPhoenixMedia oh hey there, yep they were all compatible and didn't even need specific modes enabled, but thankfully and whatever the problem was it's cleared itself out. I haven't changed what I was doing but my games now actually boot after the Playstation 2 logo. Thank you for the tutorials, I'd still be suffering through USB 1.1 cutscenes otherwise lol. If I figure out what was preventing the games from booting, I'll let you know for future refference (unless it was just something stupid I did ofc) Have yourself a snazzy day, and thank you for taking the time out of your day to help others

@@ProjectPhoenixMedia I am having this exact same issue after following this tutorial, all games that I am trying are SMB compatible and I have tried different naming configurations within OPL Manager with no luck :/ Any ideas? Freemcboot 1.966 and SPCH-7XXXX as well.

I'm assuming you have to have a computer to do this huh? I wish there was a way to just connect to the smb servers with a ps2 alone.

Alternative? Router that has a usb port and smb share capabilities. I did this with a tp link travel router, no pc at all. Just the mini router with a flash drive plugged in, and ethernet cable to PS2. Same idea with a raspberry pi, works well.

I can add it to my to do list, it wouldn't be any different than any other PS2 game on OPL, assuming its compatible.

@@ProjectPhoenixMedia apparently it needs changes with the aspect ratio and modes

@@manny3095 You can check the game compatibility list on ps2 home for which modes you need to apply for the game to work. And on opl you press triangle while hovering over the game title to apply those game modes. Aspect ratio can be changed there manually or changed to auto.

I've followed the steps exactly but I'm getting the '300: Cannot connect to SMB Server.' error still, unless I've missed something somehow but I was following the guide to the best of my knoweldge, do you have any suggestions? Please and thank you :)

Maybe best to discuss on discord or something. Are you able to ping the ps2 and get reply back in ms fine? Did you enable smbv1 fix in windows?

You can do network share on pc or laptop or pi device or whatever your heart desires
