In this video, I demonstrate the following:
1. What is sidechaining; what is a side chain?
2. How to set up a side chain compression ducking effect.
3. How to use sidechaining as a mixing tool to make room for vocals.
4. how to use the side chain input in the ES2 synthesizer to control modulation effects.

Well this is the topic that I never really understood so far: side chaining. Especially parts 1 and 2 are very important for me, probably not part 3 as it’s too time-consuming for me. I‘ll use kick and bass side chaining from now on and probably also the instrument/vocal side chain. Thanx so much. I’m a little behind in watching the modules (that concerns #46 and 48) due to lack of time at the moment, but they‘re there when I need them. 💪🏻👏🏻👍🏻🙏🏻 So next will be #50 …

Do you ever use a Bus/Aux when using side compression instead of placing directly on the track? I see this done at times and wondered what the pros/cons to this are. Thank you for this whole series of vids MTHG.

Is the side chain a type of automation??🙌

As always great video. Does the velocity of sidechain source notes impact the level of influence on the target?
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy Жыл бұрын
Not the velocity, per se, but the volume level of the output of the instrument. So if the side chain source is an instrument that is velocity sensitive for volume, then yes, it will make a difference.

Hey Josh, Say I have a song with a lot of instrumentals and my lyrics come in and out in between several bars. Suppose I want the singer to duck the instruments while singing. Would I want to use side chaining on the instruments (and how would I set that up) or just use automation on the various volume levels? This is all just hypothetical. Gianni❤

Can this be used to duck out bass synth frequencies whenever the kick hits?

I thought you could only sidechain to a audio track? Did that change in later updates to where you can now use midi?
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy Жыл бұрын
Yeah that changed a long time ago. In the earlier versions of Logic 10, you could only have audio tracks be side chain sources, so you'd have to convert MIDI to audio in order to do it, or route through an aux track first. I think as of version 10.2, you can route directly from instrument tracks.

Dang I didn’t even know but did see instruments for side chaining and just thought that you had to still do it using an audio track for some reason I didn’t know. That’s cool. Thanks.

The use case about making space for vocals doesn't seem intuitive to me. It seems like the louder the vocals are, the more the instrumental will get ducked, but shouldn't it be the opposite; the quieter the vocals are the more the instrumental will get ducked?
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy Жыл бұрын
Put it in peak mode, slam the threshold and barely pull up the ratio, then basically all notes will compress equally.

I like peak more than rms that’s just me
@MusicTechHelpGuy
@MusicTechHelpGuy Жыл бұрын
It definitely ducks more than RMS because it's taking into the full dynamic range of the transient. I'd definitely use it if you want a more noticeable ducking effect, and for softer effects RMS works well.

I find myself wanting to do more custom sound manipulation and engineering inside of alchemy. I know my way around serum very well and that’s what I always use if I have to manipulate the parameters of a synthesizer simply because I will kill me is not as user-friendly on the interface. I would love to know how to manipulate alchemy the same way I know how to manipulate serum because alchemy has some really cool synthesizers but it’s hard to use them if you can’t really manipulate them to work within your track I hope someday logic will update the user interface on alchemy and make it more user-friendly
