Campaign to End Loneliness

Campaign to End Loneliness

Күн бұрын

In 2014, the Campaign to End Loneliness asked four people give their views on loneliness in older age.
They discuss the influence that different communities and circumstances can have on staying connected in later life, including:
- Living in an urban area
- Living in a rural area
- Growing old as an LGBT person
- Becoming a carer
In this video, Lil explains some of the challenges that people living in urban areas face as they grow older, the difficulties of loneliness and how North London Cares makes a difference to her life.

Loneliness is painful, it literally hurts. To you who's reading this, smile at and chat with a stranger today, especially a senior. You'll be amazed at just how meaningful that exchange is to someone who's lonely. It can make their whole day better.

This just brings tears to my eyes. I'm so sorry for the lonely elderly. I've decided to do something to help. It would be good to coordinate volunteers to visit elderly. I don't know but I'm going to do something.

Loneliness among care dependent older persons increases suffering significantly especially if they cannot afford mobility devices. In Kenya, this is a problem that is taken for granted. Older people lack Day care centers and mobility devices as well as trained caregivers. HELP US END LONELINESS AMONG OLDER PERSONS

Yes, that's true. I'm shocked to hear young people say they've given up on friendship. Please do not give up. You have to get OUT of the house though. GO to the library (even if you're not a reader😂) Go to a bookstore, a park, a pub, a church. Join a club ... chess? bingo? art? arts & crafts? You don't have to be a fan of the activity. It's a way to meet people👓🔰🔰☕👟👒👠🎭 🎭🎨🎡🎡🎬🎬 ⛺🎨🎨 🎲🎲🎶🎹🎸🎺🍕🍷🍻🐕🐕🌳🌲🌳🍃🌻🌹☔🌞⛄❄🏊⚽⚽🏄🎳🎳🏀🏀🚲🚲💒💒🏊🔰👟🍷🍕🍕☕🍧 Choose LIFE🌹❤🌹

This is so sad. I became a widow and realize the loneliness you are faced with. However, Lil is right...you have to make yourself busy, go out daily, exercise and meet people or it will kill you. I have tried to volunteer on several sites but people are skeptical about letting strangers into their home. I am determined to put myself out there to be a companion, just to sit, have a cup of tea and chat. I would love to help a lonely person....just don’t know how to go about it. Lil you are such a lovely lady and I wish I lived closer to you. I would love to come to your home so it makes it “not so lonely”. I bake and just the smell makes my home welcoming when I come home in the evenings. I put on music or TV in the background, and I always do my chores in the PM to pass the time. I have changed my routine since my husband’s death and that has helped. Please, EVERYONE help the people who are lonely. I know you all work, but a few hours a week helping someone will make you feel so good. Let’s all band together and do something. God bless you all.

Warm weather helps. Summer time. I call it it "a person has to kill the day somehow?" Meaning one has to find something to occupy their time for 12 hours. A hobby, exercise, etc., etc. Easier said than done though, but one has to plod on. In winter, when the days are short, sleep is your friend.

I am not elderly. I am lonely too. I am in my late 50s and I was living with my two cats, my mother, and my son. Then, one cat disappeared and the other one got out of the house unnoticed. We never found him. I then lost my mother last month and all of a sudden, my son eloped with his girlfriend and left to live with her in another stat. I am now alone in this big house. I keep busy during the day with my job but at night it is so hard to be in this big house all alone. Loneliness can really destroy you, it can make you physically and mentally sick. It is not good to live alone.

Hello Lil from America 😊 I know what you are going through as I’ve lived alone for almost six years now. I don’t have any transportation and I live in the country so I don’t get out much at all . I spend my days and nights watching KZfaq clips which is nice bc I get to choose my own interest and I have two cats so they keep me company. I crochet sometimes and that passes up a lot of time and I cook at times but not a lot as I’m not a big eater, I’ve often thought that we lonely people should have a website to communicate with each other on . That might help some , just a thought , the Lonely Hearts Club might be a good name for it lol 😂 anyway I hope you this message finds you well and less lonely maybe you can mention this idea to someone that could get it set up as I feel it would help some people to just be able to communicate with others when there’s nothing else to do

Man oh man - I want to win the lottery to build a huge shelter with lots of land for unwanted and abandoned animals and also a place for older people who feel lonely so they can get out and go hang out - with other lonely like minded people and have enjoyable activities available if they would like and also the transportation to pick all of them up so they don’t have to worry about anything. Even a weekend escape - who knows - they just might meet the right guy or gal and enjoy the rest of their life. It’s my dream - that will take a miracle to pull off - but I am very focused on doing this . I’ve had a few miracles happen in my life - I’m focused on getting 1 more for both of these things to happen.

This is so sad. I'm sorry to say but the elderly represent the possibility of needing a lot of help that most people just don't have the time for. Everyone is trying to work and raise their families. That takes every ounce of energy. None left to take on the needs of an elderly neighbor. Just dropping by for a visit would be nice, but you know it doesn't end there. I was asked to take care of an verbally abusive neighbor, I had to decline.

Rachel Williams dear Rachel I’m elderly. On my own keep very busy too busy sometimes for my age but keep going as much as I can . Get very lonely . I understand how it is for the younger people and families now Days . There also very busy both working and bringing up a family and the children how do they feel I wonder thinking back to a long time ago I would have hated to go home after school and no one be there when I walked through the door . Life is just as hard now as it was then but in a different way . . But we didn’t have the luxuries Then either. It’s almost as if we can’t win really . Bless you Rachel and best wishes to you and your family Dee

Who's asking you about your neighbours? Just take care of your fucking parents for goodness' sake. If everyone did that ( white people i mean), there wouldn't be an epidemic of loneliness and depression. And yes this is a white folks problem, people who come from tribal societies don't know the meaning of loneliness. Because relationships and loyalties are built on lineages, not friendships or neighbourhoods.

@@yeshuasage3724 This is not always the case. It is the same in the US, although I know this is the UK. She describes many areas in the US perfectly. If your family members are deceased, it doesn't matter where you live. Many people have outlived their family members, It is not that their families don't want to see them or don't have time. She is right about one thing, in the inner city, no one knows their neighbors, anymore. People move so fast and so often, if you work, many times you don't realize they have moved if you don't see them moving out, because people don't communicate the way they used to, and I think the onset of technology has been a big cause of this, because the elderly are not tech savvy-which is a stumbling block to today's societal communication. You see people looking at their cell phones, and if you interrupt them, they get annoyed. They are more interested in blocking out everyone with their earphones on, and are not interested in talking. Ms. L. Churchill (USA)

There. Is no. Community feelings any more people are far too busy these days to even notice one another always changing houses especially the rental communities. Not many on my estate own there own houses there is about 15 Houseson my estate out of about 53 houses that own and live in there own home and thankfully I’m one of them . Nearly all the rental homes has changed hands this year . People keep moving on

Hi Doreen - This is exactly why The Campaign to End Loneliness is trying to create a movement called "BeMoreUs" where everyone smiles at their neighbours, says hello and tries to build a strong local community spirit through lots of small moments of interaction each day. There is a video on KZfaq about the issue, where we show children interacting with older people to try and get people talking about the issues. It is not about who owns their own home or not, it is about everyone trying to be neighbourly and go that extra mile to be friendly to each other .......... a smile goes a long way ....... and as Jane Macdonald (the singer) says, "A stranger, is a friend you haven't met yet!" - Regards: Robert
