I have gone from very social to almost completely isolated the last few years. I use my phone and skype sometimes. But I truly enjoy being alone, much better than being with people. I still look sharp, dress sharp and can be very social if needed, though I prefer not to be. Guess I am just one of those that can truly live alone on the Moon for a year :D

I have an issue with this so called project. Being alone is NOT the same as being lonely. Trust me on that. This guy has been asked to spend an entire week by himself with no phone, tablet or other devices. He does however have access to books, TV, puzzles, and games from what I can tell from this short clip. After just a week of not having his phone, not seeing his friends, and spending time in a very light situation of solitude this guy almost loses his shit. What kind of functioning adult has a reaction like that? Loneliness is a very serious problem for a lot of people and I feel this project removes the focus from that very real issue for a lot of people. It suggests that loneliness is caused by not being connected to the world; well let me tell you something, loneliness, real loneliness happens when you're completely connected to the modern world, when you're a fully functioning adult yet you go unnoticed and under appreciated. When nothing you do seems to matter, thats when loneliness creeps its way into your life. This guy, in this video, has no real concept of what loneliness is.

@@saeedelghaziri2385 Thanks for asking. These days I have a friend who I go to see at least once a week. There are still areas of my social life I definitely need improving on, like I'm still a total hot mess when it comes to dating and I don't recall ever getting any enjoyment out of it, which is a shame because I want to have a positive experience and fall in love with someone like anyone else, but things are getting better, bit by bit. I've had to overcome a whole lifetime of social anxiety, which I don't really have anymore, but because I had it for such a long time and didn't socialize much growing up like a normal person would, I often find myself having to learn or re-learn social norms and things like that.

very powerful, thank you. I run a charity Our Special Friends which is all about how important animal friends can be....a pet in the equation can be life saving/life enhancing, they help us to cope. Animals can be talked to, hugged and their very presence can be comforting. They are not the total solution but a very important part of it, and so often overlooked. Support is needed when life is tough for both human and animal welfare.

I've spent way too much time avoiding people because of my social anxiety. The meds don't help. After I lost someone I scheduled a vacation from work and just didn't want to be a part of anything. I didn't talk to anyone. I didn't leave home except once to buy groceries. I was depressed and didn't realize it because I wasn't able to cry. At least... not til I finally talked to someone about it. It all hit me at once and I was very scared and confused. I put more effort into having human contact now. It helps a lot with depression.

Honestly if they’re trying to prove what true loneliness and isolation from people is they should take a look at the people who have been in solitary confinement in prison for extended amounts of time. They would have much better proof and results of the effects of long term solitude on the human mind.

As detailed in other comments the man in this movie experiences isolation not loneliness, isolation is removal from society to a place of seclusion, in itself not necessarily a bad thing. Loneliness, however, is a destructive removal of a person, often not of their own making, to a life lacking intimacy, friendship, support, and every other human interaction, often this void can be partially filled with a cat or a dog. The human condition is naturally gregarious and loneliness destroys the human spirit and life becomes no longer worth living. Call me old fashioned but these problems were not so prevalent till we had the break up of the extended family, we need to go back to this model ASAP

What most of you commenters fail to understand is that living like this for long periods of time can be devastating on your mental health, introvert or not, and not having social interaction even for introverts can lead to depression, and obsessive thinking, and suicide. Alienation is a real thing. We are social animals, and have social needs as a result.

Cel phones & technology in general can be quite addictive. I believe it is easier for an introvert to be alone. Introverts are often depleted of their energy when with a lot of people & need to recharge by being alone. Extroverts on the other hand get their energy from others & feel depleted when alone for too long a time. Alone time is beneficial for everyone. It says something when a person does not enjoy their own company. We are time from early on to please & look for validation from others. I am a senior on disability. Not housebound thankfully. I do feel rather invisible at times & certainly underappreciated. My sons are busy with their growing families. One lives 45 minutes away & the other 3 hours away. I am considering moving to where the one who lives 3 yours away. My parents have passed, one sister lives in Canada still. Another moved a few years back & lives about 3 hours away. The other 2 are about a half hours drive from me. Having more time on my hands has actually being a blessing in many ways. I am an introvert (not antisocial which some people think it means) & so do enjoy a fair amount of solitude. I love to read & enjoy what some have well named, "You tube University". So much amazing content. I enjoy natural healing, Ted talks, spiritual growth videos, etc. I have to admit I would find it difficult to give up the internet. I am glad that more attention is being given to this important issue. Also good to remember to be compassionate to ourselves & others. May we all feel seen, appreciated & enjoy meaningful relationships. Blessings, Liliane

My advice about ending loneliness is to learn to cherish solitude and all the neato shit you can do. Remember that KZfaq videos don't judge your clothes, your finances, or anything else you don't want them to unless you want to watch one that is aimed at making you feel inferior. People, good and bad, are a goddamned time suck full of meh to say. High price to be bored so often to achieve the highly improbable goal of finding a relationship that isn't commerce in disguise or a consolation prize in countless other ways. Odds are you don't earn enough money to manage others' expectations either. It's all a money pit and your friends will not be there for you when you're homeless. Other homeless people will be there for you, but other homeless people will also take the last thing you have if it makes the molasses of time drip any fucking faster.

simple, get a pet, which disappoint less than humans. and show genuine unwavering affection straight from the gate. get online. reach out to family. go for a walk. go for coffee. read. stick your head out the window and say hello/wave/smile to the neighbors or passersby. Facebook was made for this, search old friends/schoolmates. actually, we can get on with less attention than we crave... just reporting the facts.

There is a difference between solitude and loneliness. There is also a difference between social isolation and loneliness. I think this is a peak into a bit of social isolation and loneliness. Loneliness is the perception of social isolation and solitude is deliberate aloneness for the purpose of self-improvement and connection to yourself (which I personally need). I think belonging is the key. When we believe we belong to a group, to a friendship, to a partnership or to something bigger than ourselves, we are psychologically strengthened. Even if we are living with other people, but we perceive that we don't belong, it is still very lonely. I think the elderly widows and widowers who aren't tapped into a community where they belong can really struggle with both loneliness and social isolation. Solitude gets old when you don't belong to something and to someone. We all need both autonomy and belonging.

I just want solitude.....when I am done with my contract, I aim to get an isolated cabin for a month to 6 weeks and have NO CONTACT. no internet, no phone, no movies, pictures or anything that could emulate company.....I have the money saved and about a year left..... Then I aim to try this, I want to find myself again even if I risk losing my mind. I don’t want to be the grouch I’ve become but I got to get away from everybody. Just me, and only me, no clock just a timer I can’t see but that will go off when it’s time to return to society, and someone to come get me if the time should exceed the limit by more than 5 days.

Easily, a week is nothing for me. I committed the Japanese act where you spend months inside and never go out mixing with anyone. I stayed in my room, on here and just playing video-games all night and slept all day, my body clock switched completely around. You just immerse yourself in your own little world, i end up talking to myself, analyzing things, the only time you have to worry is if you start answering yourself back. I embrace loneliness, the only problem for me from time to time is not having the physical contact of a woman, even just to hold, hug things like that.

Cause theres a specific term for it where large majority of young men do it out of sheer depression and practically giving up on society. Ive tried reading, my mind is based more in visual when it comes to stories. I try reading books and its hard to get into them. I could try comics though i guess. But really my pet-project is buying some drawing models and trying to create my own story-version of the events that played out after Prometheus and before Covenant. I have a good story to tell there its just getting myself motivated to get started on some story-boards.

Im a big Star Wars fan too and was one of those who were greatly disappointed by TLJ, infact thats a understatement. Lets just say i also have a story/idea of how TLJ could go, im thinking of buying some of those collectible figures cause they got good articulation so i can put them in different postures, all according to what situations they are in with how my story would unfold. I mainly want to get the Rey and Crait version of Luke Skywalker but that one isnt out till October of next year :( My main problem is getting motivated to do these things, i just put the game on and try working on some games to build up my gamer-score, which is pointless because its just a score.

Everyone seems to be making fun of this project and missing the point, you might enjoy your time alone, but there are people out there who have no one, nothing except their own company and time. Suicide rates are continuing to increase.... why? Because we don’t connect like we used to, some people can be surrounded by people but still feel totally alone. Think of it this way, when you where a little kid making friends was so easy right, it just happened, as an adult if you make friends these people to still call “friends” but in honesty it’s not the same, everyone is flakey, couldn’t be bothered, or to busy on their phones to have a real face to face discussion! I hope this helps someone! Rant over. (Sorry about that)

The more technology I THINK we dump into the public domain like say Facebook or Instagram and having 24 hour access anytime you wish ? Well, I feel the deeper and deeper the problem becomes with more technology that actually does the opposite which is to isolate people. We have all been there too, any user of the internet, I’d unfortunately l believe we have all experienced this type of loneliness.

When one is alone, no one is there but oneself. Do people not find it astonishing that one's own company is not sufficient? Having to 'distract' oneself with crosswords and games only makes it worse but if one could sit, just sit in silence and breathe like in Zen (Zazen), one would come to understand many things, the end of suffering for one.

Being alone isn't loneliness! Loneliness isn't total isolation. People can feel lonely and depressed even when surrounded by real & regular people including family & friends who love us, with whom we may feel somehow & inexplicably unable, to share our innermost thoughts/feelings or to connect. Anyone can feel 'disconnected' or 'invisible' in a crowd. Totally agree with Raishinshi: this guy cannot live without technology.

There are different interpretations of this video. Older adults are particularly vulnerable to the experience of social isolation and exclusion due to reduced social contacts and few social roles. Often they are the results of physical changes (sickness or disability) and life changes (loss of a partner). Loneliness and social isolation is often Related. Loneliness is not the same as being alone. People can feel lonely when they are with people. Loneliness is a distress feeling that people experience when they feel lacking satisfying social relationships. In this sense, loneliness is often detrimental to our well-being.

You´re saying this to the absolutly wrong person! Religion is the biggest con played on people. Totally ridiculous, and the "gods" would be the biggest most hateful bastards imagineable. Giving leukemia to children? What´s that about, Prince? Nothing points to any loving beings in the sky. Everything points to there being nothing. Humans have a need to give meaning to everything and believing they´ll be rewarded in a better place. But when you pull the plug you pull the plug. Sorry, but there it is.

Man he didn't do this right! So he didn't buy any DVDs? He ain't got no books to read? Last time i checked you only need Wifi to pay against someone on XBox One or the PS4. Where are his games? Take it from me. I grew up spending most of my time in the house. I know how to do it right.

Young people get lonely too. It's just that it's expressed in different ways. I'd say young people more often feel lonely and experience it more deeply compared to the old. So I don't know why they focus exclusively on old people. That said, loneliness can affect people of any age. But I think loneliness is still very much stigmatised, except for oldies. When I did cleaning for old people, the old ladies who lived alone were super happy and they were often doing stuff every day. The old men were more depressed and didn't do that much at all. So maybe gender and socialization might have something to do with loneliness, I don't know.

Mycroft Holmes young people are at the developmental stage where friends are an important part of life. If they miss out on that, then they would feel lonely much more intensely than someone older.

Dear Curtis - Thank-you for your observations. Part of the reason behind The Loneliness Project video was to highlight the anguish suffered by people whose neighbours could notice they have few interactions, and help address their loneliness through making small moments of connection - perhaps just saying 'hello' or 'can I get you a newspaper or some milk, I've noticed you have not been out for a few days?', 'how are you feeling today?' or even 'I was just about to make a cup of tea, do you fancy one too?' ........ we know helping introverts is hard, but identifying and helping people who are lonely, or potentially lonely, and doing something about it is something we can all work on, not just the Campaign itself!
