In this video I talk about how the arms are a vital part of the long jump flight technique and also look at a young jumper transitioning from the stride jump to the hitch. The latter has a focus on the arm rotations to maintain the connection with the theme of the video. I’ll focus more on the transition from the stride to the hitch in another video.
The first section of the video after the intro focusses on the shoulder shrug technique which can be used at take-off before rotating the arms for a hitch-kick. The idea is to increase vertical velocity.
The second part of the video focusses on queuing the arm action and how the length and positions of the rotations can affect the travel of the legs.
This theme continues into the third part of the video which focusses on the stride to hitch transition.
The first two parts of the video are taken from my Coach-Athlete member videos. They are from the most recent (at the time of this video going live) - numbers 33 & 34).
Both focus on how to develop and tech the hitch-kick.
Number 33 follows an actual session I did with Andrew who you see in this video. You’ll hear my interaction with him in this video - which is useful from a coach athlete interaction point of view and knowing what to say.
Coach-Athlete 34 is a follow on video and this looks at specific hitch-kick faults and fixes, such as arm action.

A bit late for this video but since i didnt find this specific topic anywhere I'd like to ask if it's necessarily better to bend the back arm while taking off? Does having the arm rotate all the way straight have any negative impact on the vertical action or even take off position? Personally i tend to almost automatically have it straight which "feels" like it causes the driving take off knee to straighten out a bit early thus maybe making the jump less vertical. However training to adapt this bent arm action was only possible from softer run ups and while it fixed the premature straightening of knee in the take off i was a lot more prone to overrotate the jump. To finish off although there are elite jumpers and previous athletes in your videos using this straight arm action, i see most of them having it bent which make me question if it is a personal mechanical preference or a fixable issue? Thanks in advance

I do like the bent arm as it can elongate the take-off drive and create greater control of rotation. If the arm goes straighter then the timing of the hitch-kick can be thrown and the high post position be positioned too early in the jump. It can be difficult to learn this movement. Some of those I coach pick it up whilst others do find it more difficult. It’s my approach to teach the bent arm to straight and long rotational movements. Keep trying even if you get slight improvement I think you will benefit.
