In this video, Rex explains the thermal and mechanical processes of rifle bore erosion and how they can affect the axis of the bore at the time the bullet exits the muzzle. As bore erosion occurs, the frictional dynamics between the bullet and the projectile change which can significantly alter the harmonic signature of the rifle barrel changing the point of impact at long range. This is crucial information to understand before we get into establishing an effective cleaning regime for long range precision rifles. Be sure to study these videos on bore erosion as they will be very important as we move on.
All the music, animations, illustrations, still photography, and video photography in this video were created by TiborasaurusRex, and unsigned artist.

Rex's 2:30am sleep deprived personal commentary on thermal and mechanical bore erosion is as follows: Yup, them old fire balls squirt in them there old barrels and wrecks'em after a while, that's for dang sure. One time, I shot at one of them metal deals and that bullet flew too high, and I was all like "what?" and then I realized that the barrel was in its break in phase and that I was hitting high due to increased MV due to micro-cracking in that gosh-dern rifle bore. So, I had to move ALL my ballistic data down by a full Mil just to correct for MV change due to bore erosion effects. Crazy, huh? Thought this wouldn't affect stuff enough to throw ya off did ya, you was wrong! I wonder how much stuff I could type in here before the video is done uploading. I have to baby this goofy thing until it uploads all the way, or it will all crash and you will have to go to a mine and dig a hole and get your own steel and make your own barrel so you can test it to see how the bore will erode over time for yourself. That's would suck wouldn't it.
For all those who read the descriptions to the end, I salute you. I hope this was an entertaining experience. Goodnight.

Sure... Clean the bore from the breach, use a bore guide if you have one, don't use a steel rod or steel brush, be sure to use a mild non-abrasive carbon removing gun cleaning solvent, don't use one guaranteed to remove all the copper fowling. Establish a cleaning regime in which you make a certain number of passes that gets most of the powder fowling out of the bore and stick to it. I usually don't go over 10 brush passes on any of my LR rifles. Don't attempt to get all the copper out.

I found your videos by happenstance and absolutely love them! I was nervous that most of the points and concepts were going to go right over my head but you have a fantastic way of conveying everything in a way that is easy to understand and grasp for someone not so well versed in mathematics and chemistry as some. Thank you and keep it up!! I'd gladly pay to learn all of this and am thankful that you take the time to teach others. Anxiously waiting for the next in series! God bless! Thanks!

Rex, would you ever consider positing a video of sample ballistic equations based on a scope of 1/4 an inch per click at 100 yards and breaking elements down at different distances and variables in elements? It could consist of certain elements and you show how to work out the equations. Also, I have a tikka t3 lite and would love hands on training. Have you ever considered a Saturday, hands on workshop? I know I would do that in a heartbeat.

Great question. Big difference? If barrel service life is our measure of a significant difference, then not really. Stainless steel will be slightly less susceptible to chemical corrosion in its unaltered state, but as the internal surfaces are broken down by the thermal shock, the changed properties of the thermally affected zone facilitates and accelerates the chemical erosion mechanisms locally. Barrel life spans will be very similar between the different steel types.

As a Machinist I'd like to chime in. Tensile strength is a must. I've read some comments here that talk about chrome lining and such. And you talking about technology... It is true that we have more technology as far as software, machines, tooling, alloys, etc... But I must worn that in the last few years, especially, "business" has destroyed machining. Long story short: the true craftsmen have been "downsized" and replaced with "cheaper" bodies. These replacements have no clue about real machining and as such the overall quality has gone WAY DOWN ! Based on these facts I would warn against any linings. I use to do a lot of repairs were I would have surfaces flash chromed in order to regrind things like bearing surfaces. I have stopped doing this all together because no matter where I sent my parts for this when I got them back, indicated them in and attempted to machine them the chrome would just fall off. That's my first reason. My second reason: concentricity. The way this is applied is not uniform and should be ground or lapped back to being true. Lapping is now a dead art and good luck grinding the I.D. of a barrel ! This is why, as a machinist, I look more toward stainless barrels as chromium (chrome) is a part of the recipe. Other alloys get hard spots due to work hardening during the machining procedures as well. This also changing tensile strength and altering the thermal dynamics, etc... I just did a few prototypes of .300 blackout barrels out of 40 series and ... WOW ! Understand too that the US sold out most steel companies ( and everything else) so most steel now in import (China junk) unless it "qualified steel" which will cost a premium. blah blah, blah... Great job with these videos ! I love using my calculator ! And I LOVE precision !

Yup, that is on the way. When I'm all done covering internal and external ballistics, I will recap by showing how all these things add up in a real firing solution, and then we will spend lots of time on how to set up ballistics tables and how to effectively conduct firing solutions in various field conditions. Workshop? Yeah, that would be fun. As soon as my schedule frees up Iand I get everything squared away - I'll post an ad. :-)

Rex, good info thanks. The detail is new to me. I have always been of the opinion that a gun should be used, its not a mantlepiece. Use it and use it hard... However, now I am a tad worried putting a bullet down the barrel at 3000ft/s. Maybe I should just mount my TRG and start collecting stamps ;) Thanks for the vids !

One other thought on free floating. If steel is distorted and introduced to a shock wave (harmonics) that distortion will be locked into the steel memory. The real craftsmen knew to shock the steel (peen) during manufacturing to set the form into the steels memory. This means after the stress is off the steel it remembers the form to return to. Now the form is just cut without normalizing, etc... Based on that, I have to agree that free floating is the best method. If you pinch the barrel and shock it the steel has no resistance against conforming.

So one of the take-home messages I get from this is that those mag dumps we all know and love are not completely without consequence. If the exterior of the barrel is too hot to touch I hate to imagine the interior bore, and the erosion that is occurring as each round passes through it. Treat your rifles with respect.

Hey I am looking into buying my first long range rifle and have been looking at the FN a3g, it has a chrome lined barrel. My question is how will that chrome lined barrel effect the erosion of the barrel over time? Is it worth the extra money?

Rex I have read that barrel length beyond 18" on a .308 offers no real advantage, is there truth to this? Can you confirm accurate 1k meter guns with these short tubes from personal experience? Also, any experience with Shilen barrels? Thinking of 20" stainless select match for my 10fp. This gun will be used for all-around long and close range plinking, hunting, etc. Thanks for the input

So with this in mind, erosion that is, a barrel should be replaced every 500 rounds to keep top end accuracy. But then again, that would be extreme even for extreme shooting.

quick question regarding surplus ammo... not sure if question was ever asked before; how much bore erosion would be caused by using magnetic bullet jacket? damage the bore?
@ScuffedEngineer
@ScuffedEngineer 9 жыл бұрын
Surplus ammo, most of the corrosion happens because of salt in primers
@zackalbanese4589
@zackalbanese4589 9 жыл бұрын
Some magnetic bullets, for example from some Russian surplus ammo have "bi-metal " jackets. Meaning there is a very thin layer of copper on the outside surface of the bullet and on the inside there is iron. the amount of copper on the surface of the bullet is not really enough to separate the iron in the bullet from the steel in the bore. this "bi-metal" jacket ammunition can be very harmful to especially non chrome lined bores like those found on most bolt action long range/ hunting rifles.. this is fine to put through say a imported chrome lined Kalashnikov / ak style rifle or a chrome lined sks like a Norinco. But i would not put it through say a chromoly barrel in a stoner / ar platform. If you would like to see more go to lucky gunner .com and watch there video on tula ammo (junk). The other kind of magnetic bullet is a steel core bullet which can be either hardened steel aka "armor piercing" or just a non hardened steel to lower the manufacturing price also to help with penetration on light barriers. This kind of magnetic bullet does not damage your bore or rifle any more then your standard commercial ammo. Basically if it has a steel case or a copper washed case unless your putting it in a ak I would personally not buy it or put it through my fire arm. steel cases them selves can also prematurely wear the ejector, extractor and many other parts. -best regards-
@SavageShooter93
@SavageShooter93 9 жыл бұрын
Zack Albanese you see alot of people say that steel cases can prematurely wear extractors and that is kind of true if certain conditions are met. Most assume the steel on steel contact will wear the bolt/extractor/whatever else faster, but since the steel in the bolt and the extractor is much harder than the very very soft steel cases simply using steel casings wont wear your parts any faster, because as the hardness of the steel and brass casings are pretty similar. You cant erode a harder surface with a softer one. You can damage a harder surface with a softer one if extreme force is used, like an extractor slipping over a case rim, but if your gun cycles steel cases fine its not any harder on your parts than a brass case. The steel casings might give you problems if your chamber is really dirty and they stick, or if there is a big old glob of laquer on a case it might stick, and yes if your extractor is slipping over the case rim that certainly prematurely wears the part, but no more than if it were to do it on a brass case, its just steel cases have more of a tendency to stick in dirty non chrome lined chambers. So using chrome lined barrels and chambers with steel ammo is still very good advice. Again as far as using a bi metal jacket that is a very very soft steel alloy, that has a similar hardness and ductility as brass I wouldnt worry. But I think this has gone off topic a little, its not like your going to be using the cheapest surplus Soviet/Chinese made ammo for anything but plinking or as a last ditch option if you were trying to make a long shot. Some high quality ammo has nickel plated brass cases and no one ever questions the suitability of those rounds for target or hunting use in any firearm.
