Cleaning your rifle correctly is very important if you wish to maitain the consistent bore conditions nessisary to make 1st round hit at long range. In this video, Rex introduces the 4 main points of what you will want to accomplish in this cleaning regime.
Extreme Long Range Precision Cleaning MAIN POINTS:
1. We want to keep the bore as consistent as possible.
2. We want the bore to be in a state of copper and powder fouling equilibrium, if possible.
3. We want to minimize bore erosion in order to increase barrel service life.
4. We want to avoid damage to our bore.

Yes, sir. That will warrant even closer attention to MVV due to the thermal effects on the bore/projectile relationships. Although temperature has a huge effect on MVV, the cleaning regime itself will not be temperature dependant, unless the coppering rate is violently accelerated.

In a moist tropical ENV I would do a minimal disturbance cleaning followed by a very light oiling of the bore before setting it down for a couple weeks. That would give me peace of mind. Hawaii is pretty wet.

Great info + channel the best on youtube for long range shooting! I went with a Rem 700 in 308 win, here in FL I shoot out to 800 meters. We don't have any areas where I can past that. Also, you have a good guitar tone. My favorite set up is Gibson SG or Ibanez S540 with my 1982 Marshall JCM 800 2204. Cheers!

Good for some shooting disciplines, but not for this one :-) It usually takes more than 20 rounds to even reach the beginning of copper equilibrium, so cleaning every 20 rounds would probably keep you in a constant state of fluctuation. Once you reach equilibrium, you'll want to keep it there as long as possible before you clean. Every time you clean, you have to start over from the beginning again. It depends on your bore and ENV conditions, but I usually go a few hundred rounds.

Howdy. Thank you, sir. SOunds like a greats et up. The F1 will serve you well, thats a great choice - you won't regret it once you get out there and start wrestling with some of the monster firing solutions with multiple variables. Barrel length. I would do 20". 18 is getting a bit short. With a .308, you'll want to keep as much of the velocity as you can. 20" should be fine. Peace.

Thanks so much for this video series! I am learning a lot! When you say "modern ammunition" is clean and not corrosive, is this really all inclusive? If you are buying cheaper ammo like Tulammo, PRVI partisan, wolf, etc, are they all using the newer powders? Does this include ammo manufactured in foreign countries? And is there any way to tell for sure?

No, sir. You should be just fine. A bore snake is pretty gentle. The problem comes when a guy aggressively cleans his rifle over and over from the muzzle with a steel rod.

Love the series, but if I clean my barrel with some kind of bore solvent and some patches, will this ruin the cooper equilibrium? Or should I start using a copper brush every 150 rounds or so?

I'm curious how you feel about Chrome Moly barrels? I run primarily AR types, but almost entirely gas guns in my lineup, and I've noticed that Chrome Moly barrels maintain their baseline level of accuracy much longer than other types of barrels. My LR308 hasn't had its barrel cleaned in close to 200 rounds now, and the cold bore accuracy is impeccable. It's getting close to time for me to clean it, though. *I always run a bore snake through it once, with plenty of lube, before I fire, I'm referring to a deeper cleaning.

You say the brush should never exit the muzzle, but does that mean do not fully exit the muzzle, or do not exit the muzzle *at* *all* ? Because then, the closer to the crown the brush gets, the less exposure to the brush and cleaner the bore gets. At the very tip, only a few bristles will contact the bore before being pulled back: the full length of the brush will not contact the surface of the bore at the crown, so it will not be as clean, right? While the rest of the bore recieves a full pass every time the brush goes by.

After cleaning do I need to foul the barrel with the bullet I will be using normally or can I use a cheaper one to get my copper equilibrium back?

Very nice videos and very good and thorough explanation of the topics! I found a lot of answers on some questions I had, that I could not find in many books.. This is as far as I got with watching, and I plan to watch all videos, but i have 2 questions if you can answer(if answers are contained in further videos then dont bother answering :D ) first one is about cleaning shotguns, can we apply similar cleaning process as the one you use on target rifles as in this video? and second is about brand new rifled barrel if u could explain how to treat brand new barrel so that it gets properly elaborated or seasoned? Sry for big post, keep up with excellent work and greetings from Montenegro! :)

Luka Djukic Howdy! Shotgun bore cleaning??? All they have to do is throw a measure of lead out the front end, so which exact cleaning regime you employ is not critical - as long as you keep it from rusting away. For your 2nd question... watch my sniper-101 videos on long range rifle break-in procedures and cleaning regimes. There are also pertinent videos on bore erosion mechanisms, etc...that would be most helpful.

Targets and coyotes, no problem. Deer??? Possible - if you use the right bullets, but that’s still pushing it. I would advise a bare minimum of 500 ft/lbs of terminal energy to ensure lethality. 1000m is a little far for the .243 if hunting deer - not quite enough energy.
@charlieandhudsonspal1312

I may get some crap for this comment but I’m saying it anyway. Shooting at deer from a 1000 meters isn’t hunting. I could get within 1000 meters of a deer elk moose or whatever in a Corvette with straight pipes playing rap music full blast! Just doesn’t feel like hunting from that far away. Fair chase is the name of the game. Paper, steel and woodchucks at a grand.

That a 3 03 ... Is beautiful, I heard if you use the old mercury primer ammo if you clean with window cleaner it nutrilises the mercury ammonia being the ingredient that keeps the rust from happening? Any truth to that?

Technically, even a nylon brush will remove the materials embrittled by chemical and thermal processes, however that will probably be the least intrusive way to go.

I've dispensed with rods altogether, the OTIS cleaning system is the only way to go, no chance of screwing cleaning the bore and chamber, very easy and no risk of damage to the bore using steel rods.

Jerry Avalos I use the coated Otis Cables as well, and nylon brushes on precision rifles. Ive gotten a case stuck in the bore out in the field though...dang cables dont help with that
@jerryavalos9610
@jerryavalos9610 7 жыл бұрын
A take down coated rod, brass, or steel rod just for stuck cases is okay, I just find OTIS pull through cables better because its less cumbersome than rods and safer for the bore.

Hey Rex I have a question that I think I already know the answer but would like to hear it from the "horses mouth." I live in Hawaii where it is always humid I was wondering if I should clean the rifle after every range trip? If I go to the range every 2 weeks is cleaning it not a big deal? I have a SS Bartlien barrel by the way. Thanks for all the great videos! ian

Hi Rex. When i first got my hunting rifle i pulled my boresnake through the muzzle because i didnt know any better, being new to shooting. I only pulled it through from the muzzle about 3, maybe 4 times.. Would that have damaged my crown..?

I appreciate the level of detail. However, there is much redundancy and repetition that is very difficult to sit through. Also, I agree it is important to teach what questions to ask. However, often it seems many questions are raised without much of a clear answer. Just my 2 cents. I will continue resolutely plod though despite this because this still seems to be the most thorough resource ive found on the web.

I would say don't clean it as often. Every time you do, you have the opportunity to introduce moisture into the bore. Rather, get it clean and dry, lubricate it properly with a penetrating oil, and then clean it very gently after shooting. Don't clean it so aggressively that you strip it down every time. Similar to seasoning a cast iron pan.
