Coppering and gunpowder fouling can accumulate in a rifle bore changing the friction dynamics between the bore and the bullet. Although excessive coppering can be a problem causing erratic performance, a certain amount of coppering can be helpful in maintaining a consistent bore environment. Overcleaning your long range precision rifle can disturb your coppering equilibrium.If you remove the copper from your bore while cleaning, you will have to start building back up to the equilibrium point from the beginning. This video explains how coppering and powder fouling build up to an equilibrium point so we ca establish an effective long range precision rifle cleaning regime.

This totally explains what happened to me the last time I went to the range. I was shooting a 3 shot group at about 1/4 MOA at first. I cleaned my rifle after about 20 rounds and my first 3 or 4 shots would be off before the groups tightened right back up. I couldn't figure it out at the time but this explains it. Thanks!

It’s 2023 now and I just got myself a teslong borescope… Holy moses… it’s an eye opener let me tell you… The borescope is an invaluable tool for understanding your cleaning regimen and your barrel wear… I can see with my own eyes the direct correlation between hot loads and accelerated throat erosion in real time 😳👍🏼 Time to shave a full grain off of my 708 load!

Mr Rex Sir that was wonderful. Consistency through Equilibrium using logging, recording, and analysis to track the variance from the plateau and using a "cleaning" method that only corrects the excess that has disturbed the balance... Masterful and Comprehensive. Thank you. Your teachings have become part of the Abundance in this facet of my life.

Awesome series... much appreciated. I’m in the east, with no opportunity to shoot at these ranges, but the collective math and science is fascinating. You have the ability to simplify the complex interrelated physical and chemical processes involved in precision long-range marksmanship and make it truly interesting. Thank you.

Although a solid stock will offer the best harmonic consistency, a high quality folding stock (like the Manners) will not be problematic. Problems usually arise in some of the low quality designs.

Excellent! I hand load monolithic hunting bullets (Barnes TTSX, Nozler ETips). After copper cleaning, I get terrible groups for up to 10 shots, then excellent groups and low muzzle velocity standard deviations for the rest of the year...typically up to a couple hundred shots.

Hey Rex. Texn here. Switched youtube accounts. That "upcoming" video list is such a tease! If you havent already seen this, I thought I would share. Its the specific results of gun cleaning products that shows you what each does and doesnt do regarding copper vs carbon, etc.The test used control variables, etc. Very helpful to target your end result. I cant link to it, but just google "gun cleaning product tests". It should be top result.

It may be best to log as much as you can to get a good bearing on any trends that might be going on. The more data you gather, the more you will be able to look back and make a good determination of what exactly is going on with your particular bore. At first, you will be logging MV all the time. After it stabilizes for a while, you can back off on logging MV and wait until the POI starts moving arround before you check it again.

For our shooting discipline, establishing a copper coating that remains stable is actually desired to some degree. If the end result is bore CONSISTENCY, then it should be good. If it results in varying levels of coppering that fluctuate more quickly, then it wil be counterproductive. More or less copper is not as important of a concept as changing copper levels - for our apps.

Just want to ask I heard that if you have to much copper in the barrel the bullet can't grab as good as it did to the grooves so thus loose sum of your spin on the bullet en then loose some accuracy if this is true what then is best leaving the copper or taking it out. Thank really studying all your videos and helps a lot on the range

Hi Rex, I am wondering, if I have found my copper stable zone, but then clean my rifle of powder fouling and moisture/dirt from a hazardous environment, and leave my copper alone, about how many rounds fired until my powder fouling will be consistent stable zone again. Will 1 fouling round be enough for powder fouling friction dynamics, or will it take more?

Hi Rex, when loading my amo I have measured the exact seating dept of my long range rifle so the COAL fits exactly within 3/100 mm. Is that too tight????or should I leave a little more free space to the rifiling. I am shooting Berger VLD 140 grain, 977m/s, caliber 6.5x68 (I am from Denmark). 1/8 twist. I am please with my groups even at 1000 meters. I have said it before....these videos are gooooooood!!!!! BRgds Per Nielsen, Denmark

Is it detrimental to the bore to not clean the rifle after firing first 20-30 shots when zeroing/shooting for groups on a new rifle? I bought a .270 Marlin XL7 a couple of years ago and when I had it zeroed... it was consistently grouping .25 MOA. I didn’t want to mess that up by cleaning.

Not applicable to standard bore sizes, but I had to clean my 17Rem after 60 rounds or a carbon ring would build up about 6 inches in front of the chamber, in the bore, and could cause some jacket shedding. At 100 yards the bullet holes would have these little grey comet trails off the edges of the holes. This was lead coming off the bullet where the jacket shed. At longer ranges the bullet would begin to keyhole. 25gr bullet at 4,100fps out of a Tikka Continental; most accurate rifle I ever owned so far.

I have heard (read) some bashing of Barnes all-copper hunting bullets. The basic complaint is that the softer copper in the Barnes bullets builds up more quickly than jacketed bullets. What are your recommendations for/against using Barnes' all-copper?

Hey Rex, awesome vids! I bought a 7mm-08 about a year ago, I am looking to get into ELR, I am looking for 162gr Amax, no luck. So do you think the 175gr Sierra HPBT MatchKing, with it's 0.608 BC, is too much for the 7mm-08 at long range say 1500 meters?

What are your thoughts on Rifle harmonics in a folding style stock. I have recently ordered a New Manners folding stock and now starting to wonder about the harmonics in a folding stock not being as consistent as more stable rigid non-folding stock? Thanks for your videos as well I have learned so much helpful information in the last week that I have been "studying" with these.

What are your thoughts on the copper fouling inhibiting powders that are designed to make brittle and sweep out copper deposits? On the face of it, the cfe223 by Hodgdon looks to push .308 168gr Matchkings really well. Should I sweep out the existing copper in my bore with a copper solvent so I can lay down a primary layer of the powder fouling that inhibits the copper fouling. Would the minimized copper fouling adversely affect the accuracy potential of the bore?

On the question on using corrosive ammo or maybe just to protect against oxidation (rust), do you feel that so much can change when just passing some gun oil through the barrel to protect against this?
@TiborasaurusRex
@TiborasaurusRex 10 жыл бұрын
Maybe try windex for corrosive ammo. That seems to work pretty good. If you have to sit the rifle down for a period in a corrosive environment, its a good idea to run a patch wetted with a little oil through it first. Just don't use too much.

What do you think of this CFE223 powder? They say the more you shoot it the more copper fouling it gets rid of in your barrel. To me that doesn’t make much sense. How does a gun powder get rid of copper? I think it’s a marketing ploy.

Thanks. I bedded and free floated the wooden stock mine came with. It's going .75 average. A few groups are better, some worse. It hasn't been exposed to extreme weather yet though. One other question. What's your barrel twist. According to Ruger CS, both of our rifles are 1:12. I don't believe it though. I'm about to check mine with the cleaning rod test.

Rex, I'm really confused here. I've watched all your videos, broken in my new stainless Tikka T3 .270 using the "easy" method. I haven't cleaned it in 400 rounds. I'm just shooting from a bench at a covered range so the only contaminants are from the cartridges/bullets/powder. Am I ok just leaving the gun not cleaned? What about the chamber? Should that be cleaned some times?

about how often do you re-evaluate your MV's due to barrel conditions . I believe i'm in that initial upswing in copper fouling(less than 200 rounds) and my MV's are about 50 fsp higher than my original MVV chart . I'm hoping they level off and then I can make new tables

At medium ranges, your potential POI shifts due to the bore's Cu state is usually not enough to warrant the cost/benefit trade-off in that course of action. Beyond 600 meters is where you will really start to notice POI shifts due to minor changes in your internal bore conditions.

Time-stamp 20:25: If modern powders and primers are no longer as corrosive as in former times, what then is the reason for cleaning the bores of all the other types of rifles after a day's shooting? Aren't you just accelerating bore wear by removing the wipe layer, and hurting your accuracy for no reason since the fowled bore is less harmful than removing the wipe layer? Why then do you recommend the same seemingly archaic cleaning procedure for all other rifle types beside the precision long range rifle?
