Hunted from tree stands for 25 years with compound and when I switched to trad I started hunting for the first time from the ground and have had by far the greatest encounters eye to eye with deer than I ever had in a tree. Great video brother

“Learn something every time you’re in the woods” this is something I’m trying to teach my 2 year old son as I take him along on my adventures. You could count the amount of hunting knowledge I have on one mangled hand, but if he and I can take your advice and learn something every time we’re out there, I think the big man’ll help us out. Thanks for teaching and sharing your hunting wisdom. This year, I became tired of lugging around a stand in and out of public and looking for the right tree. I’m going to make it a point to start hunting from the ground more. It’s definitely a challenge to draw back a bow and not get busted down here in the southern WMAs. There will be a learning curve but I’ve got a head start thanks to you.

Awesome Robert. Great tips. Hunted from the ground today on public land and saw several deer within 15 yards of me. Drew back on an 8 point but let him go because he had a huge knot on his spine and it just looked sketchy to me. Had a great time and I used your tips on wearing gloves and a face covering to minimize that glow on the skin. These videos are perfect for me as I live just north of you in middle Georgia .. so all of the info you provide is very applicable to the terrain I hunt. I also work a maintenance job that allows me a lot of time off for hunting like you so I put it to good use. Thanks Robert and keep it up!

I’m a ground hunter just because I’m a double amputee below the knee and I love ground hunting and I’ve learned a lot from it what to do what not to do I’m always learning and adapting

I'm 65 years old been hunting traditional and homemade bows all my life in the past ten years I climbed a tree once ground hunting is the best for me,might not be for someone else but I live to ground hunt and spot and stalk ,thanks for the video very good and informative

Funny timing. I’ve always been a ground hunter and killed many deer. This year I decided to saddle hunt, and it’s been miserable. Takes too much time to set up; I’m sweating climbing the tree, kind of noisy and terribly fiddly. Had no success in a saddle and I believe I can’t be quiet enough yet getting set up. After having enough, I went back to ground hunting. On my first sit on the ground, this big old donkey doe stepped out within 15 yards and startled me. I believe the difference was being very quiet. She saw me twitch and busted me. Haha! After 17 sits in a saddle and hardly seeing deer, she surprised me.

Thank you Robert for making these videos. I think you and I are about the same age, 61. Though I've taken a quit a few with traditional equipment, I'm always looking to learn a little something new. I hunt in the bottoms of Arkansas. Except for the palmettos, your hunting grounds look a lot like mine. We hunt mostly the same type "akerns." I'm going to try a Phantom Ghostblind this year just to have something in front of me when I back up to bushes or a big old cypress. I too am slowly getting away from climbing. Again, thanks, and may you have many more years in the swamp.

I always enjoy your videos, and I hunt with and own several Howard Hill bows. Watching this video you said you worked the weekend shift, from 2004 until I retired in 2019 I worked the weekend shift all except 2016 and 2017. I hunt in Texas as don’t public land , but it’s nice to out when things are quieter. My God continue to bless you.

Curious if you wear an orange vest or hat on your public land? I like the idea of ground hunting and/or slip hunting. However, on my public up here in North Ga I’d be nervous without orange on. Great video Mr Carter!

I only hunt areas open for Archery only. When a wma' has a gun hunt I go somewhere else. I don't wear orange except maybe to the tree .

The eye of the storm is just to the south of me as I watch this video (NW Fla coast). Just turned 62 and I know I will be transitioning from my climber to the ground. The 2 WMA's I hunt are very low and very thick, but basically the same type of terrain and trees. Maybe a video on that type of a thick cover scenario on the ground, and how about a video on techniques you use when EVERY tree on the WMA is dumping acorns ? That's a very common scenario here too. Thank you for sharing, looking forward to the next video. These are great educators for me !!!

I made a green Gillie top last week just for ground hunting, my terrain is nothing like yours here in the Ouachita Mountains of western Ark. I now hunt a lot of pine plantations. I'm a few years older than you and my tree climbing days have been over for a couple of years. My walking days are pretty much over too so I hunt closer to the truck, it is what it is. always enjoy your videos and keep them up my Brother

Great video. My one stick climbing method/platform failed, allowing the platform to fall out of the tree to the ground, twice in the last week. Thankfully I was in the saddle and just dropped a few feet before my tether caught me. Needless to say I am not using that setup to climb a tree until it gets fixed so while I’m waiting on replacement parts to come in I am ground hunting. Interesting how things like that happen sometimes for a reason. Thanks for the motivation and tips for success! Good luck out there!

Be safe! I know nothing about saddles but if your gonna carry something to get up the tree and you are gonna carry a platform why not use a loc on stand?

@@robertcarte95 it’s really lightweight, comfortable and safe. It’s nice to be able to hide behind the trunk of the tree as well. The platform that I have that fell twice is the EWO one stick. It’s not the company’s fault, it’s a different company that makes the cam cleat that holds the rope in place when it’s on the tree. EWO has been very responsive and is sending a replacement part. I’m going with a physical button rather than a cam to hold the rope in place. This experience has made me more confident in hunting from a saddle. I hunted from lock ons for a while, they have their place especially when nestled in a split trunk tree or something gnarly but I still prefer the saddle for safety and weight. It takes some getting used to but if you give it a chance I think you will see the benefits. Thanks again for all the good info and fellowship, keep it up!!

Yup! In Florida, we did get the brunt of hurricane Nicole. Tommorow going public land bow hunting on the ground with a strong south wing. I'm planning on stalking a river bottom with the wind in my face.

Love ground hunting. Would love to take a turkey with my old recurve this Spring. Seems too much though. Also concerned one of those big boars my charge someday. I’ve had two close encounters with them over the years. They never charged, thankfully. Thoughts on turkeys and boars?

Never had a boar charge me. I been hunting hogs with a bow for 35 years. I love Turkey hunting with my bow. Have been lucky and killed several. I usually let the pigs distract me from the gobblers.lol

I’m 42, my dad never liked treestands so naturally that’s all I hunted untill I was about 17 and bought a couple stands myself. I have killed equally from both, I find while sitting on the ground I’m constantly wondering what I’m not seeing lol In the tree I love being able to just see the woods and watch everything from above, sometimes I won’t even grab my bow, I just watch nature,

Good stuff Robert. You’ve mentioned we would kill more deer from the ground if we put more time in. I started hunting much more on the ground three years ago because I was too tired to climb. One thing lead to another and I got at least 10 just these past three seasons. And after leaves come down I prefer the ground now. And I like the fronts that move through after November kicks in. I need 5 to 8 mph as a minimum to have confidence. More later. Thanks
