Should be mentioned that at the battle of Waterloo, Napoleons generals and commanders were not what they used to be, it was closer to the C-team and not the Elite A-team he was used to. His team around him made mistake after mistake, making everything harder. Napoleon was of course not what he used to be, but most things went against him after Russia, his luck had not only run out, but there was just bad luck ahead

I spent a couple of years working on St Helena. Very rugged on the outside, but very much like a very hilly Cornwall or Devon on the inside. Gorgeous place, excellent diving in crystal clear unspoilt waters. Boney spent some time in a house called the briars, whilst Longwood was being finished, he became rather enamoured of the owners daughter. Longwood is now a museum, and France has an ambassador on St Helena. Whenever the saints have a celebration or big event. ( They have loads) he always dresses up as Napoleon

Hey Simon, you should do a video on Newgrange next. It's a massive Neolithic structure in Ireland that's older than the Pyramids (the oldest one being the Pyramid of Djoser at 2600 bc)and Stonehenge(3000bc) being built in 3200 bc. It has a door with a roof box above it that perfectly aligns with the sun on the Winter solstice and a roof so well made that it's still waterproof to this day. Archaeologists are baffled on how these people were able to build such a sophisticated structure before the advent of writing and the crane and how advanced their knowledge of the cosmos and the exact alignment of the sun was. Shows how skilled my ancestors were in construction techniques, lapidary design, mathematical calculations and astronomical observation. And for April fools day you should do a video on Nat Tate and for pride month you should do Judy Garland. Anyway great video, as always. Keep up the good work.

Another excellent video by the Geographics team. Your best best videos are really when you mix up the formula talking more about a story then a certain place. But the place itself was incredibly amazing to learn about to. The bitter end of Napoleon... thank you so much for this lesson in history

Simon really doesn't like Napoleon, does he? Just remember, the regimes that replaced him didn't exactly "free" the people of Europe. The Congress of Vienna tried to reimpose absolute monarchy, or close to it, all over the place.

You do know that he left France with hundreds of thousands less healthy educated(and tall) men.........setting them back genetically for generations(see canadian men who are from French families(very short even today.....for example.........the men in england were so short during WWI that they had to change their regs to let in the short guys and then starting giving food to families and pregnant women to make their children healthier(thus taller). Who know what those dead men killed for napoleons ego could have done or what their future, never born, children would have accomplished? A cure for cancer in the early 1900's? A way to feed all the people of the world? the end to wars?............

Few absolute monarchies were as cruel and brutal (and had crazy world conquering fantasies) as Napoleon. Absolute power doesn't always create monsters like Napoleon, Stalin or Hitler. Of course it makes it more possible, as the various Louis's proved. Absolute monarchies were the rule, not the exception. That doesn't make them euqal. And judging them out of context with 200 years political hindsight makes no sense. Live in Prussia for example was considerably more safe and reliable than in France. The legal reforms of Frederick the Great went beyond anything the french Revolution achieved. And he was an absolute monarch. PS: @TY: Have a little read about Cromwell.

How funny to watch this video directly from Elba! Apparently his last words leaving the Island on the 26th Feb 1815 were: "I will come back, my Sons! I leave my mother and my sister in your hands." I guess when he didn't come back, the locals went "oh well, he's gone for good. Let's go to his villas and sell everything that isn't screwed down to the floor."
