I just watched the whole video again. So before your videos I’ve used resources such as the Ken Hill podcasts, a twist of the wrist, and life at lean. I think this sounds a lot like the 2 step that a twist of the wrist talks about but that for a newer track day rider, this is much more helpful because it gives the rider an on track point of view AND literally points out what he is looking for as he “looks through” the corner. I know when I first started reading through whatever material I could get my hands on, some of the terms confused me. I’d be like “look through the turn, I think I get it, but what exactly should I be looking for?” Good stuff here, and thanks for breaking it down.

Thanks, I was an instructor at The Superbike School for a long time and this video is kinda like the "two step" drill they teach at the school. I'm just kinda expanding on that. The two step is really about looking in before you turn the bike. This is kinda a continuation of that, just trying to stay one step ahead at all times.

Great vid Stu. That turn has sooo much drive out and is pretty fast... both directions. I love watching (shooting) you guys and gals coming out of that turn. -The Lorax

Great video! Last time I was in Chuckwalla was in December 2015. I don’t remember the pavement cracking this bad.
@stumanrides
@stumanrides 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it looks a lot worse than it really is. You don't really feel the cracks too much when riding. They are more of a visual distraction than anything.

You can look far and still see close. But if you look close it tends to obscure what is ahead... Your Field of View (FOV) might be large but your Field of Focus is very small. We each have about 180 degrees of view. But your actual central vision (fovea) is only 2-3 degrees. That represents the visual fixation component in your FOV. Ice hockey player trained to intercept a puck uses what? Field of View or Field of Focus? Ice hockey player uses different visual techniques cutting into the ice than a motorcyclist does tearing up the track. Place an object 10 bike lengths in front of you and another object 30 bike lengths. Look at the farthest object. Do you still see the closest object? Now look at the closest object. Do you still see the farthest object? The answer for the first is YES. The answer for the send condition is probably not. The philosophy here is once you see the reference point promptly move along to next. The first reference point will remain in your field of view while you are using the best part of your vision (fovea) to seek the next reference point... Again, excellent video.

Pretty basic, but useful tips. Keep 'em coming PS: That track/pavement is awful !!! Here in Spain I don´t believe it woul pass any safety regulation.....
@stumanrides
@stumanrides 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it is basic, but important I think. The pavement looks pretty bad, but it isn't as bad as it appears. You don't really notice the cracks while riding.

I was told by Swantz himself to always be looking towards the Vanishing Point, yet Chuckwalla is in open desert, so scanning (like your vid says) is important.
@stumanrides
@stumanrides 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, what I'm talking about here is just something you can use to look further ahead. I agree with Swantz though, even at chuckwalla, if you can keep your eyes out in front of you it is even better. But it is hard to do sometimes.

@@stumanrides yrup! I have a bad habit of looking at the Rider in front of me, if he goes wide, I do too... What do you do then??? Look ahead and keep riders in your peripheral??? I dont feel comfortable when I get STUFFED too...
@stumanrides
@stumanrides 4 жыл бұрын
@@johnnygoesfast9397 Yes, you want to always look past the rider in front of you and try to just use your peripheral vision to keep track of where they are. I also try to offset my line a little from the rider in front so I'm never directly behind them, always a little to the left or right.

I often go to tracks for the first time in my life and ride a day max two days in a row. What I do is what I've learned from Simon Crafar vids and also directly from Greg Black (endurance rider). I print a map of the track, I look at some vids before that (not beginners vids), try to figure out the reference points common to couple of them, even watching a lap on 0.25 speed on youtube, then mark them on the map and when I go ride I verify during first and second session (riding at 60%-70%) to see how it feels IRL. Then after sessions I take my map, and do adjustments (corrections) like pushing further brake reference points, mark bumps, add my newly discovered reference points, change the marking for the gear that I think I feel more comfortable entering into corners etc.

Hi Stu, do I need to memorize all these reference points before riding?
@stumanrides
@stumanrides 4 жыл бұрын
I think it would be hard just using this video. When you go out and ride you may see some and remember them from the video and then you can use them, but you can probably find others on the track that work for you. The point is to just try to find each reference point well in advance and don't fixate on them for too long, try to keep reaching out with your eyes for the next one and the next one......

StumanRides yes I get the point, but I should start finding my own points right? Because I don’t have any memorized
@stumanrides
@stumanrides 4 жыл бұрын
@@AlexTorres-mw3dr Yes for sure you should find stuff you can use and memorize them. It's really the first thing that you should do when you come to a track. Find your marks.
