AD plants, there is one of the biggest cons going, using waste to generate power (like you do) is fine but the growing of crops to feed an AD plant is sheer lunacy! the fuel, land, fertiliser, pesticides used to grow crops, mainly maize & fodder beet in my area, would cost more than the actual fuel produced, if it wasn't for the GGSS (Green Gas Support Scheme) none of these would be operating, more government crap. was feeling 85% but down several points on that now 😂

The majority of AD plants in the UK are incentivised through power purchase agreements or feed in tariffs. Very few plants are gas to grid and claim the green gas scheme payments. Income generated by these incentives allows these sites to grow crops specifically for digestion and still profit.

Would they not be better just putting fuel into the generator to produce electricity!?😅 If you counted up the amount of fuel to establish crop, harvest crop, haul out digestate liquid/fibre, spread it. Would keep it going for a long time? Plus there's fertiliser and chemicals used to grow crops.🤷

Hi Olly, i know fuelwood well, great company. But can i suggest you look at a Wiilbrand green material shredder. Being in the woodchip sector for a while i know that a woodchipper wont produce a good material from the sort of stuff you have dropped. They really are for actual tree waste not mixed green waste. You either only take in woody tree waste or look for a machine designed for green waste. Hope this helps a little Great video of the AD plant.

Heizo is definitely the way to go. You could take it with another tractor and a grain trailer to the material eg a stack of timber and chip on site rather than burning or bringing stuff back to the yard. Currently chipper would be a bit hard to do that 😂

I wouldn’t go to a blower style chipper for green waste, I think inamongst wet heavy grass you’ll soon regret the move. You’re dealing with a lot rougher material than just logs. Waste needs a big intake hopper in my opinion. Get in touch with CRJ about a jenz, they are by far the best chippers for green waste at the moment for tons per hour.

If it’s the one I’m thinking of they use the electricity the AD plant generates to power the temperature controlled distribution centre next door. I’m unaware of the subsidies but they are impressive bits of kit with giant ‘gas’ engines that burn the methane the digester produces.

Hi Olly. That AD plant did not use it, but I have seen a plant that utilizes food waste, This is great where you have a seaside area full of hotels like Poole/Bournemouth in the South. I had a company that collected the waste from various businesses. The main advantage of food waste being used in an AD plant is that it seriously reduces the cost for the producer of waste removal. I thimk there are 2 ways to look at AD one is you can think its green energy and yes you can return nutriants back to the land, the other is like all farming it wont work without subsidy, most of them are fed by crops grown specificaly to feed the digester. The 25 percent chicken muck is mixed with another 75 of crops mixed with water so becomes a major logistical operation to move to suitable land and spread, plentu of digesters hauling crops and digestate 20 or 30 miles which must have a huge carbon footprint, and as it is so heavily subsidised other smaller farmers have no chance of renting land becouse they cannot compete with digesters, theres talk of spud land in herefordshire making over £700 per acre, somebody once told me 4 acres of solar panels would equal 4000 acres though a digester, all the same its a good way to make money and they keep a lot of contractors busy

What you are currently running is a shredder, not a chipper. The ones you where looking at today are chippers. 2 completely different machines desined to do different things. A chipper is made to chop logs and branches into woodchip. What you are taking in at youre yard is green waste, wich obfiously includes logs, but also leaves, grass, and all sorts of other organic matter. A chipper like you where looking at today doesnt like to chop greenwaste and it will not work well. You will need a shredder type machine like the one you have now. There are a lot of options as in brands that make shredders al with different advantages en disadvantages (because there is quite a bit of difference between the different brands). Shredders are used for shredding lots of different kinds of waste like wood, tires etc. Different brands and tipes will have advantages and disadvantages in different kinds of products. I hope the salesman off the chippers knows that a chipper isnt the machine you need. The only problem is that there are no shredders made to be powered by a tractor like a lot of chippers. In my opinion a Peterson shredder would be the best machine for you, only i dont know i the make a size that would be affordable for you since you dont a huge amount of shredding. Peterson is an American brand. I run a peterson 5700c myself wich has been a great machine. Coming from a jenz ba715, wich i think is a very comperable machine to youre shredder, it is a massive inprovement. On the jenz the theeth could swing independently from the drum just like youre comptech. On the peterson the theeth are fixed to the drum, wich is far better because you have a lot less moving parts and less ware en tare en mantainance. On a peterson there are for screens, wich the first one can swing away when there is a big impact like a iron object. This works with a airbag, of wich you can change the persure to set how easily the screen can swing away. This system works very well and this is why it can run with fixed theeth because a iron object will exit de drum when the top screens wings away.

There's a couple of plants up the road from us in NW of Glasgow. Requires a huge number of vehicle movements per day (Fendt/JCBs with large slurry tankers) on the local road network, so have to wonder whether the sustainability case actually stacks-up when you consider the emissions from the vehicles. Also, when combusting methane, it's still producing CO2, so still producing greenhouse gases (similar to combine cycle Natural Gas generation).

Not a lover of these when agricultural products are grown specifically for them. They were designed for urban waste food but efficiency was improved if agricultural green stuff was added. The problem when not built on a farm that can use the waste is transportation of it. There is we are told, and I had to research this, 95% solid waste so for every 100 tonnes fed 95 tonnes is solid waste to be scattered on fields. What was discovered was that local farmers grew crops for an independent digester. In stead of 300 tons of nitrate fertiliser 30,000 tons of waste would be transported through the 14 ft road of our village and a 100 tons of nitrate would still have to be added to the fields. So in truth the sheer cost of transport over distance is not very viable and totally disconnects local community it passes through. It is a valuable adjunct for recovering urban waste if the digester is next to fields that can immediately use the product but that must go on year round. The use of sugar beet distorts the market as digester companies are paying slightly higher price than British Sugar and so we import more cane sugar. While I mention cane sugar why are NI farmers being paid a supplement not to grow a product that cannot be grown there? That is a waste of money for everybody.

My neighbors with the gigantic dairy farm are putting in 2 methane digesters, the gas will go into the pipeline, so they say? I agree with your thinking on the chipper, it would be great if you could turn them over frequently with the dealer, someone would get a good used chipper and you could have a new one with less problems? But you most likely are way ahead of me on that!

Are any of them using chippers, probably not as chippers are for forestry material - logs and brash. Trust me I’ve learned from making that same mistake and went back to a shredder. If you do decide on the chipper make sure your chipper dealer signs a contract that their machine will handle your material as you expect it.
