This model has been in the works for a long time, way back when I was building Fatbetty I started planning and collecting parts for this thing.
I wasn't sure if I was going to make a truck mounted crane or excavator so it kinda just sat about because I didn't commit and start on the mechanics.
I figure if I don't box myself in too much with the house I will still have hand room to make the internals later. I reckon I must have been inspired by Johnathan W's recent crane rescue videos because I decided to throw a few hours at the old build and see what happened.
I've probably mentioned this build in passing in one of my channel vlogs, but I don't think I really done any video of it before.

RC cable cranes and shovels are probably a bit of an acquired taste. Should be fun though.

yeah, the natural color and patina are great. It will look like a crusty old thing without much weathering required.

your videos and others are a insparation to me to make a 1/6 scale rc truck that is a overland truck and it will be baced on a 1980's era chevy military pickup truck and ill make it detailed also like a 1/6 scale engine and drivetrain and more keep up the good work.

Wow - I found it moving to see the original sketches for FatBetty - like going online and seeing Faraday´s original sketch for the first ever automotive spark ignition system. By the way, someone´s been pinching your footage again - I recently clicked on a vid called "Top 10 Oldtimer RC trucks" and recognised her in there. Bastards... That poor mailbox! I imagine it had a traumatic time the day it ws retired from service.

The pepper grinder´s (presumably epicyclic) reduction gearing is a great idea. I´ve often thought of repurposing a cordless screwdriver´s gearbox in an RC car...

My sketches are funny, more very rough guides than anything else. In truth, they're scribbled reminder pictures because I don't trust my memory.

@@OldIronRC I´ve never looked at a pepper grinder head. It´s like a Kango, or electro-pneumatic hammer - I´ve spent hours using the bloody things and have sometimes idly wondered what´s inside that makes it work, but never looked. Lazy...

Ah! you keep a note book of build ideas. Poster Danny called you an ARTIST. I agree. An 8x8 crane. Just me, but me I really like that idea. You say your held up by electronics. YES all it takes is $$$. So not to be devils advocate ;) but as for the crane there is a rash of servo winches that have come onto market and even YT build videos about making winches. So revisiting the crane is could be a good thing at this time. Maybe even a simple A frame boom winch. The White Freightliner is such a statement that it deserves good driving videos but it also deserves it's own plexiglass case. It's an R/C truck model. But it's like Fat Belly, it's stepped over into art and I look at it and it creates it's own story. White Freightliner doesn't need a backdrop or a foreground or anything else. It tells a story, it's a story about trucks and trucking and truck people. My dad had cabovers, Freightliners. I learned to drive in a cabover Freightliner. I did my first trip over the grapevine in a cabover Freightliner. So foregive me if I make too much of it but your models really speak to me.

Thanks very much Mike! It blows me away my crazy models give some people so much inspiration. I bet you can still smell the interior of the old Freightliner cab when you think back to it. My inability to choose a mechanical method and stick to it has held up this project too long. Continuous rotation servos might be the way. I got some high reduction worm gear ideas kicking about too.

@@OldIronRC I bounced back and forth from working in aviation/ airlines and truck driving. Really only made decision to hang up comercial driving in 2016. Yes I can still smell them. If you ever get to Oz and go to Quantas Airlines Museum there is Boeing 707-138. series airliner there. That's about where I cut my teeth on civilian aircraft, they were old aircraft then, wonderful experience to work on one of the early classics. Prior to that I had to drive truck for Dad. So cabovers, hauling crude oil ot of Bakersfield Calif where I started. Ever hear of a kid who ran away and joined the circus? I was the 19 year old who ran away and did aerospace testing stuff and then went to the civilian airlines.

@@mikeupton5406 Closest I've got to the planes is 737 cockpit cut from a boneyard (a mate use to work at a simulator makers, they would buy the front off a retired plane and gut them). I still got some aluminum off one that I want to use to make a 1/14th reefer trailer..
