Loose watercolour on continuous line drawing

So, this is the watercolour stage of the pen and wash piece I uploaded a few days ago. As I say in. my mumbling commentary, when adding watercolour to such a loose drawing, the challenge is always to retain that looseness, and I feel I may have failed in that respect, as I could feel myself starting to be more precise in the colour stage. Oh well...I can try again.

Thanks again John. Enjoyable to watch and helpful. I'm a fan of continous line and limited washes. I sometimes get carried away and end up with a fully painted scene 😊 I can identify with 'Because I've done that ...'

Hi John, and thank you for this two video series. I like the way you’ve kept your color choices down to a handful, and I’m glad you went in and tinted those last two wall surfaces. It really toned down the bright end of the row houses. Also, I’m glad you pulled that ocher color and went in with the light wash of paynes and muck on the last walls. That really ties all the other wall surfaces together nicely. When I was a young man, I had an art teacher, Mr Schoch, who warmed us up with continuous line. We’d draw continuous line with random things around the art room-still lives, wine, glass, and anything that was there. At the time, I didn’t necessarily care for it, but now I use it in my own stretching practice and I’m thankful he introduced me. Also, I like your use and understanding of perspective. During that same time I took an architectural rendering class where I learned a basic understanding of perspective which has stayed with me throughout my life. I use it often in my own urban sketching. Again, I really enjoy your videos and your work. Thanks for sharing, Jim, in Delaware in the US. Take care.

Really enjoyed seeing this “ sketch”/ painting come to life with colour… even the mucky ones….all of the UK has so many “mucky” stone buildings …terraced housing etc…being originally from Lancs ,I am familiar with many of the idioms & of course, some of the Yorkshire phrases etc. which ended up in neighbouring counties…occasionally, they pop out in my conversations 🙂

Hi John-another great video, thanks. I so enjoy them, and they've got me back to painting again (not to your standard, of course!) One question though-since you moved into your new studio, have you changed the lighting above your work? The reason I ask is that your videos appear to have some sort of flicker on them when I view them? Keep up the great work. Cheers JR

Cheers John, and for your kind words. The lighting is the same, but apparently I had the frame rate on my iphone's camera set wrongly, which causes the flickering you mention. I've altered the settings now, so we'll see if there's any difference only next video, coming very soon. John

It’s a small thin sponge: I keep it dampish,& so easy to rinse out at suitable intervals 😁

Is it a sponge you use to clean/wet your brush? You keep it at the side of your colour palette.

It is, yes, a very thin sponge: I have half a dozen dotted around- keeps my table from getting covered in paint!

Try using a plastic pipette to add water to your washes.

Thanks for your suggestion, but I can't see how this would help? Using my brush as I'm mixing seems to allow much more control over the mix consistency- flooding the mix with lots of water from a pipette wouldn't give me the same level of fine control.
