This short video is a demonstration of one of the best techniques for loosening up your line drawing- that of depicting a scene or object in one continuous line without lifting your pen (or pencil) from the paper. I find this a great warming-up exercise, and this one was done the night before an actual live, in-person workshop after I hadn't really drawn much for the preceding few days, due to family commitments.
Try it- you'll be surprised at the results, and another tip is to set yourself a time limit....say 10 or 15 minutes.
Thanks for watching..
and as ever, I'll be really interested in your comments, or drop me an email ( and share your drawings) on john@drawninyorkshire.com

Thank you for another excellent tutorial John. I recall someone else (can't remember who it was) saying that if you do accidentally lift your pen off the paper that's ok as long as you start again from the point where you lifted - hope that makes sense!

Thank you, John! I find your videos very soothing. I shall definitely try this as an exercise because I cannot seem to make loose sketches. It was very helpful indeed!

When I first started drawing many years ago I learned by continuous line drawing, even blind contour drawing. Great video, I'm going to start warming up again using this technique.

Excellent John - and thanks for the shout out. A technique I must try as I find my drawing is getting a little too stiff !

Thank you for this. I am always so uptight but this really helped me have more expressive lines. The idea that you could just go back over your line to get back to where you need to be was the best tip ever! I'm feeling a little stupid but duh! Thank you

Incredible ... You are pushing us beyond our (supposed) limits. I'll try tomorrow but not sure of the result. If you ever have some time later in autumn, a tuto showing how you managed the river in your (old) drawing showing a bridge in foreground , you would make me more than happy. Another one dedicated to how to shape the stones (one by one) of your dry stone walls would be fantastic ! (I just do not "understand" how to manage ... Thank you again and again. Thank you for taking the time to share your skills John. Very instructive. I am interested in your sketchbook of choice. I have tried this and usually regret not making a few rough pencil marks first. However, I guess that's the whole point isn't it? Thanks again.
