Charles, Earl Cornwallis (1738-1805) was a military officer who served in the British Army during the American War of Independence. He is best known for surrendering his army after the 1781 Siege of Yorktown, an act that ended major hostilities in North America and led directly to peace negotiations and the eventual end of the war.
Lord Cornwallis played by Tom Wilkinson. Banastre Tarleton (Colonel Tavington) played by Jason Isaacs.

Its amazing how with a music change, this movie gets a much more serious and even a bit more realistic feel (not saying its 100% accurate, but it feels less "joyful" like the movie is. In this trailer it feels much darker and grittier now. WELL DONE !!!!!!!!

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son,that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” We all deserve to go to hell because we have sinned. But God loved us and gave us His Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross in our place to pay the punishment of all of our sins for us when he died on the cross. Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and yet God the Son also. God the Father (God)has raised Jesus his son from the dead. JESUS IS COMING AGAIN!!!! Repent of your sins, and believe in who Jesus is and what He did for you and that God the Father has raised Him from the dead and you WILL BE SAVED FROM THE LAKE OF FIRE(hell). Sinner’s prayer Lord, I know I’m a sinner, I believe that you died on the cross in my place of burning in hell forever so I wouldn’t have to go to hell. I accept your sacrifice for me. Please save me from the lake of fire and forgive my sins. Thank you for the gift of eternal life! Amen. Now turn from your wicked ways towards Jesus Christ and surrender your life to Him! If you have any questions please ask me! God bless you!😊♥️♥️♥️

@@steelnerve5683 Well, as the letters were to his son they were primarily focused upon family life and his sons health. There was some interesting insight into his views on Tipu Sultan, his opposing general in the Agnlo-Mysore wars, and I think that Cornwallis respected Tipu's prowess as a commander which was quite suprising considering British attitudes towards Indians at the time. There was almost no mention of his time in America or Yorktown and not much about the military campaigns in India as i think he wanted to distance that part of his life from his son. It was a super interesting project, when the letters have been published I'll be able to edit the link into this comment.

"These colonials are our brethren and when this conflict is over we shall reestablish commerce with them." It's worth remembering that the opening of the American Revolution amounted to men who saw themselves as Englishmen seeking to assert what they perceived to be their rights as Englishmen, and not seeking to become independent. George III was ill-served by his advisors; it is a testament to his character that, after all was said and done, he was able to put aside any remaining ill-feeling and help bring about normalized diplomatic relations between Great Britain and the United States.

Cornwallis's quote (whether he said it or not doesn't matter) expresses an old sentiment in English history (at least since the Norman Conquest). Since 1066 English history is filled with quabbles in the royal family, rebellions, and civil wars, but always afterward the 2 sides found common ground and buried the hatchet. An argument could be made that by not totally eradicating the opposition, the seeds of the next conflict were constantly being sown Yet, even beheading Charles I did not end that Civil War. Charles II waited for his chance as France's guest.

Cornwallis later became Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1798 where he helped put down the United Irishmen rebellion which was inspired by the American and French revolutions. He was then instrumental in bringing about the Act of Union in 1800 which dissolved the Irish parliament and formed the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. "the life of a Lord Lieutenant of Ireland comes up to my idea of a perfect misery; but if I can achieve the great object of consolidating the British Empire, I shall be sufficiently repaid." - Cornwallis

October 19, General Cornwallis surrendered 7,087 officers and men, 900 seamen, 144 cannons, 15 galleys, a frigate, and 30 transport ships. Pleading illness, he did not attend the surrender ceremony, but his second-in-command, General Charles O'Hara, carried Cornwallis' sword to the American and French commanders. Historically Cornwallis was actually quite sympathetic to the cause of American Independence. He disliked the tax policy on tea and other goods. He didn't like what England was doing in the Colonies but he also had a job to do. They portrayed him pretty well in The Patriot. But he would never stoop to the level of Tavington. Side note: Tavington was based on a real historical figure, the Earl of Tarlton. He was named "the butcher" but it was a bit of a misnomer. He charged a rebel line but there was a miscommunication whether they were retreating or not. He ran into them, but the intent was not to run down retreating soldiers. it was a mistake in the fog of war essentially. Overall great film, one of my favorites! I might have been wrong on some small details, any polite corrections welcome!

Unknown to most Americans, at least half of the men who served in the British Army in the Revolution were born in America. The Revolution was a civil war in many respects as much as it was a war for independence. Sadly many of the Loyalists were lynched after the wars end, those that could escaped to Canada or went to Britain, but thousands were murdered.

A mistake modern americans and modern britts make is that it was a war of us vs them and different people. Its easy to think they were diferent specially looking at the USA in which alot of migration happened later from all over Europe then later latin america and asia. Thing is, the people of those days were British descendents, they came mostly from Brittain, there was some that were loyal to the crown, some to the recolution, alot of them saw themselfs as the same people, but seperated by idiology, geography and difference of treatement.

Well done video with the music! It really adds to it! Being a life long New Englander who lives 10 minutes away from Concord and Lexington this really hit home in my historical soul and made me feel actual sympathy if that makes sense for the British and that things go so out of hand that it came to war in the first place. It was a terrible war and the relationship was a family like spat taken to a war level. This sentiment was shown perfectly in HBO’s John Adams when Adam’s goes to England to meet King George III after the war was over. Wether we as Americans like to admit it we owe most of our country and government to the efforts and civic systems implemented by the Brit’s such as our court/legal system for example. Are you British?

Every single American history teacher in the United States should be compelled to make their students watch this film and write a report on it. Americans NEED TO KNOW WHERE THEY COME FROM. Sadly, we don't. Kids think the 90's was a long time ago, but they think slavery was yesterday. Our focus has been redirected by nefarious forces and it needs to be readjusted within a historical context.

I don't know enough about the battles of the American revolutionary war, but the feigned retreat by the militia and subsequent ambush of the British, was precisely what happened at the Battle of Hastings, 1066. The Normans deployed the exact same tactic and annihilated the English that stormed after them. Perhaps this was the source of inspiration for the scene at 6:00.

Well... oligarchs/plutocrats... got a frisky and wanted to squeal in the swill. Hoink like bloat hog that should have been harvested years ago. And so... they fomented the moron multitude just enough of them and they got what they wanted after many deaths of the moron multitude. Hindsight... the UK abolished slavery sooner by 1834... NHS universal healthcare by 1948... and most of the common wealth countries from Canada to New Zealand to Australia have a form of universal healthcare... The US it took another 30 years and murderous pluto-rat induced civil war to abolish slavery. And even today people in the US die due to inability to afford medical procedures, prescriptions like insulin, or keeping up with regular check ups as well as not going in for preventive medical examinations. It is hard to say, the competition between the two countries and the common wealth countries helped make each country better in other ways. Universal suffrage (the right of women to vote) started in the US 1920... earlier in some states. While UK it took another 8 years... 1928. In the end, it is always up to the infestation at the top, the fungus that feasts on all the flesh below, when they sense their Louis the 16th moment or Nicholas the 2nd is on the horizon... they concede... Long lesson of history, is that aristocracy is and always will be a poison pill, the enemy of us all despite what nation we are born under, and until we create 100% upper bound inheritance taxes, create non-bribing and non-donating election campaign systems, allow for an auto arbitrage method of constructing voting districts that eliminate the so called elected, electing their voters via gerrymandering, until we realize their propaganda nonsense such as laissez faire markets are magical and super efficient as if a toaster which is very efficient at burning bread and waffles and bagels can do your accounting and plan for you future too... Until we develop an effective set of these laws and rules that provides for a very potent anti-fungal cream to humanity of this poison pill of aristocrats, oligarchs, plutocrats, and dynasties...

@@Epicilem I was just hoping people didn’t walk away from the film thinking Cornwallis was a bad guy. I don’t know if he looked down the nose at the rebels in real life, and I think if you had to pick a British general during the American revolution to vilify, Cornwallis would be a poor choice. But then again he’s the antagonist, while Tavington (Banastre Tarelton) is the true villain, which even then is debatable. The British never locked patriots in a church and burnt it down, most British generals and soldiers were devout Christians and would never done as such, and which if that had happened in real life is something Americans would never let the British forget. In reality, Tavington would of been court-martialed and hung, with the leaders/generals of the British colonial forces launching a massive PR campaign to rectify the horrid news. Might even reach the home islands and would wholesale be condemned by citizens and the aristocracy alike as utterly barbaric. Might reach other countries with similar condemnation.
