Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is back with new footage being shown to "influencers" and content creators, the superfans are back! At least this time for Rings of Power they actually know something about Lord of the Rings, but they also got more wined and dined than the last group of superfans who only got to see Rings of Power at a castle. A trip around Oxford and other Tolkien or Lord of the Rings related places was on the cards, but don't worry, this didn't influence them at all!

What do you think about Amazon sending these "superfans" to events where they show them new footage after a day of the red carpet treatment? Do you think you can remain unbiased after meeting the showrunners and getting free stuff? Let me know your thoughts below, and as always, thanks for watching :)

Peter Jackson’s movies were a mixed bag. At least for many of us who loved the books before the movies came out. I know that for a lot of people who grew up after the movies came out, the movies are almost the first point of reference for LOTR (which I find a bit sad). But these are adaptations from Tolkien’s world, not Jackson’s interpretation of Tolkien’s world.

His treatment of Faramir in particular, and Gondor in general, for instance. And in terms of “faithfulness” to Tolkien’s mythos, what about having a bunch of elves turn up at the Battle of Helm’s Deep and declare it to be “The Last Alliance of Elves and Men”? That is a waaaaay bigger bit of fuckery with the lore than have a beardless dwarf woman. The Last Alliance is absolutely seminal in the mythos, and is part of the whole story of the changing ages of Middle Earth. But now it’s just some important but middle sized side battle? Just so Jackson could have someone say something that sounded cool in one scene?

Tolkien has readers, not "superfans". He wrote mythology rather than an epic and his work is more comparible to Homer's than say Rowling's. His readers are more concerned with the history and structure of his world. Which is why the appendices are so important to them.
@earlofdoncaster5018

Amazon isn't really aiming at the readers, or even the far wider circle of people who enjoyed the movie. No they want the people in the outer circle, because they're the widest market. So they're making a LotR show for people who are indifferent to LotR, because they vastly outnumber the people in the two inner circles, and by traducing Peter Jackson and The LotR movie they will fail to hit all three circles of potential audience.

American companies really over estimate the power of influencers. If the series is garbage those few people who follow those influencer's advice will drop it before episode 2 airs.

It is odd, because it assumes that people don't have a quality bar of their own to judge it by even if the first wave gets them to go and see it themselves to give it a chance. But businesses are based on the idea that their marketing carries weight and convinces people. It's definitely true that by the 2nd day and 2nd episode the truth will be out. Many people will have their reviews up on the same day as the episode airs. But the ones that air instantly, or even BEFORE the episode? They will all have been massaged by these events.

I spent a semester in England for college. I went to Oxford with friends and, unknown to me, it happened to be the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit. There was an awesome display of original, handwritten pages and illustrations from the early drafts, as well as information on the man himself. I purchased a hard copy of The Hobbit and was thrilled to be in a place of revered history. I hated the liberties taken in The Hobbit trilogy because they were so far out in left field. The liberties that were taken in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, however, were somewhat understandable considering the time constraints of the media (who can sit through a 4-5 hour movie without bathroom breaks?). The only thing I took exception to was Tree Beard's reluctance to get involved with Saruman. Tolkien wrote these stories to provide a fitting mythology based on British history. If you want to create a mythology to cover modern sensitivities, create your own. Don't deconstruct an existing creation to your vision of how things ought to have been. Thank you for standing with us in this.

They are trying to destroy European identity. They hate "whiteness". Erasing people's connection to their culture and history is their aim. Lord of the Rings, like The Witcher, is European fantasy. Its mythology, architecture, food, clothing, environments, politics, etc is all based on European culture, history and mythology. Imagine if in Mulan they had inserted a bunch of white people and pretended that they were just normal citizens of ancient China. That would be insulting and wrong. The fact that Mulan is fantasy wouldn't make it any less wrong. But this kind of thing is increasingly common with properties that have a historical or fantastical European setting.

This is how you know what Amazon & the “Rings of Power” show runners are doing is intentionally dishonest. If you’re confident in the quality of what you’re making & truly BELIEVE you’re doing Justice to Tolkien’s work, you invite people who have been publicly critical or worried, with huge subscriber bases, that have integrity, like Nerdrotic, etc. to this event, to win them over & get them on board. Unless, you already know what you made, clearly won’t do that? ie. I don’t think Peter Jackson would have been apprehensive at all, to show his LOTR trilogy to even the most ardent Tolkien fan & discuss it with them, prior to it’s release? Because he had confidence in what he made & in what he was trying to do.

I find it tough to believe Brandon Sanderson thinks the show has good writing, but it might be he knows book plots and just has terrible taste in television. The alternative explanation is he is making screenplays of his own books and doesn't want to annoy a major streaming platform. Seems most likely to me. Personally if this was the case I'd rather he just not say anything that praise it, but that's me. As to one of your favourite creators, I wonder if it's the one I'm thinking of, but there were a few. The issue they have here is that the Wheel of Time creators were largely small except for the odd one. Easy to get on side, and indeed already agreed with the beliefs that drove the destruction in the first place. As Lord of the Rings has a far wider following due to the popularity of the books but especially the movies, they had to make a play for far larger people and more targeted channels this time. They missed the mark with the trailer, it'll be interesting to see it's effect this time.

They're no longer the "in" language, and conservatives/right-wingers still holding onto these terms are still playing on the Left's linguistic terms. Call it what it is: an extension of anti-whiteism; the attack on the very idea that there can be a beloved literary world, TV show, or film series that represents white/Europeans. They're attacking culture, as a proxy for the greater goal of anti-whiteness in the political sphere and in demographic reality. This show is explicitly anti-white.

"Everyone agreed as soon as they started handing out bundles of cash off camera!". I'd love to see the contract they signed requiring them to say nothing but nice things or get sued. By the way, in businesses I've worked in as far back as I can remember it's called 'influencing the influencers', because companies have always had people they rely on the opinion of and if you bribe that person, you get the contract. Nowadays, the public has their opinionometers too. Businesses will dress it up as 'showing appreciation to these people for their time', but it's bribery, simple as that. The access hook is a side effect of the public being fluid, and puts these public influencers in a very precarious place once they bite the hook.

+ Just Some Guy. Not for any diversity reasons. Just purely because he made some of the best video criticisms of the trailer and what Amazon has been doing to attack Tolkien readers, and Tolkien's legacy.

If there was an award for marketing, we might have a winner before the show even comes out.

Amazon buying Shills, whatever next. Let them burn the marketing money, the series will rise or fall on its own merits.

As someone who has read tolkien's work and watched the PJ films many times, I will not lie I am very skeptic about the amazon show being any kind of success ever since the superbowl. I think that everyone involved in the show has the wrong concepts in mind when making an adaptation like this. However, the show is not out yet, and I will not give a full judgement of the show, or any opinions given out by influencers until I have seen the show myself. I think it is important to be cautious, but to also not overtly assume things will be awful based on just a very vague article, a bad teaser, and a horrible fans react video. The marketing tactics of amazon could definitely use some serious work, because it's atrocious.

Does anybody actually take anything these individuals have to say seriously anymore??? Seeing as though we know what Amazon Prime’s motives are. It isn’t about good storytelling to say the least. Lol

Given the size of some of these people and their channels? I'd say yes. In fact I think Amazon is counting on it. Would their videos go far and wide especially if done in advance before anyone else can comment? Absolutely. Will people trust it? I think that depends what people know has happened.

@@disparutoo I personally have never heard of some of these channels that they’ve chosen to represent the series. In all sense of the word before? So I’m not sure why they wouldn’t go with someone more like Gary from Nerdrotic who individuals actually respect? Oh wait. XD

@@disparutoo I got rid of my Amazon Prime not too long ago. I doubt I’ll be renewing it to watch this trash series when it’s released. I’ll just watch the Peter Jackson Extended Editions instead. Lol
