I called Dyson to find a service center than still offers cleaning services and they don’t have anymore but they said they would email me some step by step videos to take it apart and clean it. The videos were so unhelpful so I came to KZfaq and MAN your video is so awesome! Dyson should pay you and send your link out not the nonsense they sent me

The air compressor idea mentioned in the comments worked very well. I also used it to clean up cleaning head. This video was helpful to show me how to get the brush out of the head. When I did that, I discovered there was a piece of paper clogging the intake tube. I would also encourage you to take the cloth part of the removable filter off the plastic frame when you rinse it out. I had been rinsing it as demonstrated in the video. However, when I removed the cloth part of the filter, I discovered there was caked dirt inside it as a result of rinsing. Once I removed the clump of dirt, let the filter dry and removed the paper and dirt clogging the intake tube the machine works like new.

Thank you so much for a clear and very useful instruction video. My 6 year old Dyson had begun stopping intermittently and we thought it might be the filter but on taking it to bits there was a lot of dirt trapped in various areas. Thoroughly cleaned apart from taking the (pink in my case) large head to bits as it just wouldn’t move and I was scared to break that. Everything else cleaned, filter, brush head etc etc and now drying overnight. Can’t wait to see how my very clean Dyson works tomorrow. Thanks again.

Thank you for posting this video. I recently purchased a second hand Dyson V6 which had been fairly well used and plenty of caked dust up around the inner bin and dust cover. Decided to go ahead and follow this video to do my own cleaning with no prior experience or great engineering knowledge, just this video and common sense with a few small make up brushes. Took my time and used blunt plastic pry tool rather than metal head screwdriver to reduce wear and scratches. All went smoothly no problems at all, removed all dust and used alcohol solution to clean non electrical parts and dried with microfiber. Put everything back together and it's good as new. I agree with comment about repetition of this process may well weaken the plastic and allow gaps for greater dust intake. Parts for this are relatively low cost now though on ebay due to the age. Worked for me thanks 👍

I have looked at several videos of people cleaning Dyson vacuums of various models and what is interesting is that Dyson's instructions do not show or recommend detailed cleaning of this sort! I believe Dyson underestimates just how dirty their machines become and one can only clean them by disassembly which Dyson does not endorse at all! Thanks for showing this.

This was very helpful! My Dyson V6 is working so much better. I did go a bit further in removing parts, just needed a long handled T10 torx screwdriver. This has solved my problems of the motor cutting in and out endlessly. So much fine dirt//dust in the innards. Also saw that my motorhead brush was worn down to nothing and after your simple tutorial, was able to remove/clean it while awaiting a replacement brush from Amazon. Many thanks!

Great video, thx. I give my Dyson a deep clean once/twice a year. For anyone having a fluffy head few tips... the detachable rollers on the Fluffy are machine washable, really brings them back to life. For the main plastic housing vacuum out the dust, then use wipes and the back of a spoon to dig into all the nooks and crannies, really lifts out all the dirt... just be gentle, especially around the motor and you'll end up with a Dyson as good as new!

Regardless of what Dyson recommends it is much better to dissemble the center filter rather than just rinsing it as shown. Depending on your circumstances there can be lots of hair, debris inside the filter bag which can only be removed by separating the filter from the plastic frame.

Yes, it was difficult to pull down that piece, but follow carefully, and it will come down will gentle pulling. I I have a cat and don't know whose hair is more in the unit!!! This guy has told it well. Do it once, and it will be easier the next time. It takes over a half hour to clean the unit! That's the bad part of the Dyson, but it's a great cordless! thank you for this video on cleaning the purple filter. I had previously contacted Dyson about this and the guy said that the filter can come off but he wouldn't recommend me trying. Then I saw the Dyson being demonstrated in a store and I asked that guy did he know how to clean it and he told me there was a video on KZfaq but it was not an official video. I decided to follow your video. I was very nervous. I put matchsticks in the gap as I went round trying to lever off the filter. Eventually I got it off. Dust everywhere! There is no doubt that I have made little dents in the plastic edge of the filter, but as long as it goes back together (I haven't got that far yet!) too bad. I used a pastry brush to get in all the nooks and crannies. It is now as new. I am going to write to Dyson about this problem (not mentioning what I've done!) and see what they say. It's a really bad fault that this can't be cleaned properly.

Thanks, very useful. Re the removal of the semi-conical portion starting at 2:26, after using a screwdriver for the main tab as per the video, I found it easier and safer (less chance of damage) to use a plastic bicycle tyre lever to finish the job of prying off the smaller tabs all the way around.

Very helpful tutorial and I successfully did both of our power heads after watching tips here. Firstly, I do suggest it is better to remove the purple and white filter and carefully push in the plastic tabs so the filter bag can be removed from the plastic frame and then turn the inside of the filter bag inside out to properly clean it. You will be surprised with the amount of crud you will likely find inside that fabric bag. See KZfaq video by Honest Dad how to clean Dyson V6 filter. IMHO washing the exterior under the tap as demonstrated does not properly clean the filter. Secondly, getting that screen off is a very difficult chore but can be done with time and plenty of patience as it can be frustrating as you get one side loosened and the other side relocks itself. I suggest using a medium size flat screwdriver as it has more leverage than a small flat screwdriver and keep working around the perimeter of the plastic top. Be careful as you don’t want to damage the plastic.

This is the reason I like Dyson Hoover's. Any one from a certain age will remember the Hoover paperbags "messy and smelly" and they never lasted long enough🤔 and they would rip open as you tried to empty it, and you would pumpe the stagnant smell of the paper bag you have just emptied back into the house 🤯. To avoid invalidating the warranty by taking the filter off, just take the small filter and bin off and clean as per this video , and then take it outside and tap the filter on a flat surface, not much force is needed, just gentle tapping and lots of the fine dust comes out in a pile, just keep doing it until it stops releasing the dust and give it a good blow 😜 to just get the small amount that remains off. Warranty isn't affected and you don't risk breaking it..unless you bang it too hard of course 😜

Thank you for the helpful video. I took that first filter apart and cleaned the inside which was full of dirt. All that dirt will clog up like mud in the filter if you wet it and don't get it totally clean on the inside. You have to be very careful in separating the filter off the plastic piece. There are 2 divets along the top which you can wedge apart. I used a small round bottle type brush to get all the dirt out.

FYI regarding rinsing and cleaning the filter, the dirt is actually collected inside the filter and not the outside surface. You should hold it upside down while running it under warm water. Continue rinsing and gently squeezing the filter until the water runs clean. Turn off the water then lightly tap and gently squeeze the filter to remove excess water.

Video shows the cone filter been cleaned upside down. The dirt is in the inside. By cleaning it this way, the dirt will just gather at the bottom of the cone. Dyson say to hold the cone with the skinny end up and the open end down. That way the dirt can flow out of the filter.

CORRECTION >>> The cloth filter wasn't rinsed correctly in the video. You need to turn the cloth filter up-side-down to rinse. Otherwise, the fine dust and small debris will get washed down into the bottom tip of the cloth filter and get collected there. And in a few years the filter might clog up and the motor could start whining in high pitch noise and burnout. So turn the filter up-side-down, tap out the dust first when the filter is still dry, and then rinse with water after.

Great instructional video. After doing this myself, I'd recommend using a face mask (and possibly even goggles) while doing this, or perhaps under the vent hood on your stove or next to an air purifier. The dust particles are incredibly tiny and carry lots of allergens. I was sneezing and my eyes were scratchy. My cat sneezed too. Dysons are great for people who like taking things apart and putting them back together.

To clean the purple filter use the hard sprayer on your sink if you have one. Hold it at an angle at the bottom and spray the water through the element to push the dirt out. This works very well for me. In wintertime, to dry all of the components after washing, place them on a floor heat register. They will be dry in a jiffy. In summertime just set them outside.

You don't need to take the inner filter shroud off, but if you must do it, then use a spudger or a guitar pick rather than a screwdriver to avoid chewing up the plastic around the edge. To deal with smells without disassembling your machine, with an empty bin, dump some Shake 'n' Vac on the floor and vacuum it up, leave it in the bin.

Great video! Thanks for the help. One thing I would change is that the parts you do with a brush, they are much better to take outside and use a pressure attachment on an air compressor. Obviously not everyone has a compressor but if you do it gets every little bit of dust blasted out of there.

Ideally you need a set of plastic pry tools for doing this job. Also, as already said by Jeff Wilson you can remove the whole Cyclone assembly from the motor body. To do this remove the waste bin then look between the Cyclone top and the motor body you'll see a white plastic clip (well the two ends of it anyway). You'll need a pair of long-nosed pliers or something similar to squeeze these together while wriggling the Cyclone free.

I've found using a can of air duster saves you having to remove the inner cover with a screwdriver. you can blast all the dust off with a blast of air and any fluff caught in the rubber seal at the top

Thanks for showing how to open and clean this. I don't know what toret screws are but mine simply had torx screws which can be subbing removed and replaced with a small flathead screwdriver, and after bumping it and seeing dust falling out from inside still. I opened up the inside. I am so glad I did as there was more dust inside that inner part than the rest of the parts altogether!!! Perhaps I could have gotten most of it out with an air compressor and banging but removing 5 small screws with a small flathead was much easier than undoing the snap clips with the flathead, so well well with it.

Safety first when you clean out Dyson vacuum cleaners, because water and electricity don't mix. I watched my dad remove the brush bar from the orange Dyson DC24 ball upright vacuum cleaner this year in the spring and observed his sanitation skills. He's never seen that much hair in his life.

Got one and am generally quite impressed with its performance, but this model does need continuel cleaning and unclogging, especially the brushhead which tends to clog up the hole through which the dirt goes, you can tell when this is happening, it stops picking up dirt and the motor sound gets noticeably louder. Have to agree that some of the plastics used do feel a bit "brittle", so be careful taking it apart, it obviously was designed not to be.
