Los Angeles Homeless Man Works Full Time and Sleeps at Venice Beach

I met Jason while he was waiting for the winter shelter bus. It was his day off. Jason works full time but because he doesn't get off of work and back to Venice Beach in time, Jason cannot only access the winter shelter. Jason also shares in this interview that sometimes he'd rather sleep outside than go into the homeless shelter.
During the colder months, LAHSA (Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority) operates emergency winter homeless shelters throughout Los Angeles County. At few locations, they bus homeless people to the winter shelters. LAHSA does the best they can with the resources they have but because there are far more homeless people that need help than there is the support to help them, programs like the winter shelter are at best just warehousing people and do little to end homelessness!
Please don't get me wrong, emergency winter homeless shelters provide a valuable service when the weather gets cold. It's just that the lack of any real housing solutions to get people off the streets combined with a service model that kicks people out during the day even in cold weather work to maintain homelessness more than anything.
When we first met, I gave Jason some socks and my business card. A few days later I received a text from Jason that he checked out Invisible People online. Jason wrote: " I like what you are doing and would be willing to share a bit about my experience." We tried to connect that night, but Jason called me from work letting me know that he picked up a second shift and we'd have to reschedule. He works as a dishwasher, and you could hear the kitchen noise. I immediately thought how great it is that Jason will get some overtime, but my heart broke realizing that for a homeless people, an unplanned change like that can be logistically challenging. Jason told me he slept in the Silver Lake area that night because it was too late to get back to Venice Beach.
Jason has lived on the streets homeless for a little over a year. He's had a few good paying jobs in that time, but Jason made the mistake of spending his money on hotel stays. Homelessness is horrible, so it's common for a homeless person who gets a job to want to get off the streets as soon as possible. Plus, it's impossible to maintain employment if you can't shower or get a good nights sleep. Hotel rooms can become a trap that keeps people in a state of homelessness, but sadly the homeless sector does not make it easy for working homeless people.
There is no end in sight of the affordable housing crisis. The cost to rent an apartment is skyrocketing in every community while incomes remain stagnant. More and more people with jobs are living outside homeless. Some people say well move, but saving up for relocation is not always possible and then where do you go? Rents are going up in every city in America!

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as KZfaq, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

It's pretty easy to blame the homeless person for their homelessness, isn't it? Kind makes for a nice excuse to not take any actions to help them. The interesting part is that as taxpayers we all pay huge money per homeless person that's out on the streets no matter who we blame for their homelessness! invisiblepeople.tv/housingfirst ▼

Most people aren't interested in casting blame on people for their life situations, we all have our own setbacks to deal with, every life is a tragedy in that sense, I don't understand how a person can come here from another country and receive assistance that native born citizens aren't able to get, that's something that still doesn't make sense to me.

In 2003 I had an apartment for $800 a month and it was crap. In $2013 my co worker lived in the apartment across the hall from the one I used to rent, rent was now $1,400 no upgrades what so ever, they places looked exactly the way they were when I was there. The rent increased $600 but minimum wage had gone up $1.40 an hour, along with the cost of food, electric, healthcare, even education. People are running a hamster wheel to nowhere fast, the apartments we had were actually the cheapest in our area too.

For the homeless there just seems to be a disconnect somewhere. The disconnect with family, life skills, social skills, or just the inability start over in another city. There are places where the homeless people will never be able the thrive like LA and Manhattan, Seattle. These places will chew you up and spit you out It can be more subtle than alcoholism or mental illness but something isn’t right. Living on the street is not a viable alternative. If it is your only solution there is a serious problem. No one should have to live on the street. Homeless people have big problems, they need a society to care for them, and protect them. They need a chance at life.

Put an ad on Craigslist in the rooms wanted section. Say how much you are willing to pay. Even say something like you are willing to sleep in their living room. When I was homeless I got several replies from saying I just got a job and I can pay in a few weeks. A man helped me out and I slept on the floor for $300 a month in the living room. Much better then being outside and showered everyday. That can also work if you want to move. Phoenix is cheap. You could get a room for $300 or $400. Just make sure you find someone who doesn't require you to pay deposits or anything extra. If you have a job buying a bus ticket and having at least a month or two of rent to give shouldnt be too hard. You can get to your new city, get on food stamps. LA is too expensive. Get out of there. I have had this conversation many times. When I started working in the late '60s, minimum wage was $1.50 an hour. If waiting tables, it was .75 plus tips. However, gas was .17 to .19 a gallon. If gas was rounded up to .25 a gallon, an hour of work would buy about 6 gallons. How much would 6 gallons cost now? What would minimum wage be if it were pegged to how much gas it would buy?? Minimum wage has so much less purchasing power now. It becomes harder and harder to keep a roof over your head today.

Here in Australia in my 46 years on this earth, I notice today that things people need often cost proportionally more and more, while wants are cheaper and cheaper. Example: We all need food, water, shelter and clothing for survival. A loaf of fancy bread can cost more than a basic toaster, an electric kettle can cost the same as a couple of bottles of water. We need the bread every day, but we don't purchase a toaster very often. House prices here in Australian capital cities are ridiculous in relation to wages, fuel is over $1.50 per litre or $6 per gallon. Yet wage growth is stagnant so quality of life is ever diminishing. It is indeed harder to keep that roof over your head, feed your family, transport them around, yet we can purchase an endless supply of cheap electronics and household tat to fill the void and make us feel more "satisfied". In my opinion the modern world is all arse about face.

It's not difficult to become homeless at all. You need a cash reserve these days to pay all the ridiculous fees and taxes, and if your transportation breaks down, which it will, that could be hundreds. It's ridiculous how expensive it is to live. We are paying for every little thing, and the wages are not commensurate with the rising expenses. The economy is supposedly better now, but not the wages.

Everybody hiring, try a location where cost of living is low and take a job. Where I live, the young people don’t work, so there’s lots of jobs and cheap apartments. I live in a beautiful house for less than it cost just to have a small apartment in LA. I’d never be homeless here. Here you could work two of these 15.00 jobs and make plenty of money. I don’t understand why these people stay in these expensive places where they will never be able to afford an apartment. I can’t find 25 yo people to work at 15.00 an hour plus overtime in an area where a cheap apartment can be had for 500 a month. They live off their parents and are too good for work.

Would like to have a update on Jason! I used to sleep not far from the shelter the first time I was homeless found a small bridge a couple of pallets and left my sleeping bag with blankets there so I could get to bed early and get out before sunrise I worked mornings unloading frozen ham into tubs wet and cold so you were soaked after 4 hours! Shelter back then was only half full now they overflow! Had 2 lockers so I had extra gear! Back than they only had 2 employment agencies and worked the blue collar jobs plus had a part time job at newspaper doing inserts! No food stamps back then! I think twice when I traveled I got just 2 months worth in 4 years! Never had bedbugs then but now you do so I prefer sleeping out and would head south when things slowed down after holidays! The temp service I did back then would drive you out to job! Back then you could be walking across country with backpack and get work! The upper plains has lower unemployment numbers like Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota! When I got full time work I still slept out till I had 5 paychecks and got a shared house with 2 other guys! Drugs and alcohol makes you not has wary! I had family members who went that route so grew up knowing I was not into that! Did fish, hunt and camp growing up so I treated it like a adventure! I used to camp and sleep in my family yard! Always hated large cities usually just passed through them! Now on section 8 due to medical problems compounded by GOP healthcare! Want to do senior work program that would get me off section 8 so looking to live in rural area! They have more housing with declining population!

@@SaulTeebolz Well think out the box, ur rent is cheap, his is not, simple, he cannot move, because he has a good paying job there. Also he may have local connections, friends, family, a kid etc. I saw video of man with a phd homeless in Detroit, not think on that. if people with education are homeless, you know the country is ripe for revolution. i have health issues and my son is training to be an architect, but there is no way i would tell him if i was homeless, besides he would not help any way. This kind of stuff is happen in England as well, where people cannot find a house or a room or apartment to rent. Why because they are asking for two months in advance, plus months rent on top of that, so your talk £2-3000 for people to cough up. The government just banned landlords fleecing people like that, so they put the rents, most of the time the house is crap, with damp, and rodents, complain and you out. Now landlords cannot kick people with out a good reason ie not paying the rent. All this is good though, it means as things settle people are not made homeless so easily. All that is needed though is a fair rent act to come in.
