The twenty-second chapter in a series of LOST EXPLAINED videos that investigate the mythology and mysteries from the seminal television series LOST. These definitive explanations are based on multiple viewings of the show over the years and careful studying of the details, clues, inconsistencies and contradictions that make up the complex tapestry of what is the greatest television show from the 2000s.
Chapter Twenty-Two digs deep into the nature of dreams in LOST. We will explore each specific dream portrayed in the show and their various meanings. Plus, LOST EXPLAINED will make a case as to why the dreams had nothing to do with the Man in Black and everything to do with The Source/The Island. We are beginning to get into more divisive territory with this series in which we shall detonate some long-held misconceptions within the fanbase.
This chapter is a sequel/extension of Chapter Four "The Island", which explored the specific powers of The Island. If you haven't seen it, I suggest you check it out.

I like the way you showed that dreams are more likely to come from the Island/The Source and not MiB, I totally agree with you, and I love your interpretations of these dreams in Lost, especially Locke’s dream in the sweat lodge. That dream is very fascinating, and I’ve never thought that the fact that Sayid, Jin and Sun are together could also mean that they will die together in the same place… Brilliant! But in this case I wonder what the writers knew at this point in the story, if it was already their intention to kill certain characters at a certain point, and if we have to interpret some elements of the first seasons as premonitions (therefore clues) of the last seasons. Anyway, Charlie’s dream has always interested me. I think it’s very interesting that in this dream Charlie’s mother tells him: “Someday you're going to get us out of here, all of us. Now, go on, play us a tune”, because, as a matter of fact, Charlie will “save” his friends and will get them out of there (the island) by playing a tune, since the code in the Looking Glass station was actually a song. In the dream we also see Charlie playing the piano in the sea, and the Looking Glass Station is a underwater station

I think that part of Charlie’s dream may have been a plan. I think usually the seasons are planned out at once, and maybe even ideas for the next seasons are laid out while working on the season that will be released first. Throughout season 1 they kept hinting at the tail section survivors and season 2 followed that story for the most part. Jacob was set up really early in the story, during season 3 if I’m not mistaken. I think some things were definitely planned out early on while others were not, but I think in the end they really nailed connecting everything. A good example of their plan being changed is the part about how Eko was supposed to be a bigger role only to be cut short quickly. That explains why they cut his great character so soon, I always wondered why they decided to kill him off and now we know that they didn’t. And now knowing that a lot of his planned story were moved to Desmond and Ben I can see that they did have a long term plan for him, as I believe that he was supposed to be the one who experienced the time jumps, or at least he was supposed to have a bigger part in it and I can definitely see him being in that role. I wanna know exactly what parts of his story were moved to Ben though, as I can’t really remember many. Either way I think this fact goes to show that they had a solid plan laid out for stories that wouldn’t happen for another season or two, as the time stuff was in season 4 while Eko dies early season 3. Not too big of a jump but I do believe that they had a solid idea for what to do for season 3 and 4 by the time of season 2, as the final scene of season 2 teases the boat that the survivors find near the end of season 3 and explore the story of in season 4.

Also I deff used to assume ALL dreams were MIB related. But it occured to me watching this that MIB cant break Jacob's rules. Hi. Another fine video. There's very little in LOST that annoys me more than the overkill of the MIB being invoked as the reason for myriad dreams and sightings (and we've discussed the sightings in detail before). It seems to be a default setting for so many people, ie, "I don't really understand this so I'll just mark it down to the MIB". It's great to have explanations like this that debunk many of those "theories".

Claire's dream occurs one or two nights before Ethan "attacks" her in her sleep. This delegitimize her fears to Jack who upsets her and causes her to walk back to the beach alone giving Ethan a chance to improvise and kidnap her. Not at all. We can read any of the events that have a supernatural/paranormal edge to them in LOST as being the result of The Island influencing causality. To make certain things happen. Claire's dream is a catalyst for the events of 'Raised by Another'. I think your reading of how the dream leads to certain behaviours and events is totally astute and fair.

@@TheFourthAct I think Hurley's dream is a great example of the randomness that can spill out of our brains during dreams. The Island is communicating but there is always the dreamer's own subconscious filling in the gaps. It might have meaning related to the past, or emotional states. Hurley seeing the Mr. Clucks mascot is food related, both to his past working there and his present having to provide food to people once again. While Jin speaking English to him could be seen as foreshadowing to "Dude, your English is awesome!". And Hurley knowing Korean could be a foreshadow to him someday being able to communicate with anyone regardless of language... like Jacob.

It would be nice to have a video summarizing the Lost extended universe, as well as an explanation of what is and is not canon. It's slightly off topic based on the name of your channel but it would still be very interesting. Anyway, I still enjoy this series of videos. I have a feeling that this channel will be shared a lot when fans come across people on the internet who don't understand the show and complain about it on the networks. Your theory may become a reference on the explanation of Lost, first because it is particularly accurate and precise and second because it is an easy to understand video series that makes understanding Lost very accessible, almost playful. Perhaps you will be seen as a prophet of Lost, or as a distinguished theologian. You have the qualities to take on such a role ;) What I think is significant in your idea of the series is that the Light is a character in its own right that directly influences the series. Although I am a fan of Lost, I had never heard of such a principle and it is very attractive. I talked to a friend about it and he told me that he thought it was an explanation created by the fans to simply solve mysteries when they didn't know how else to explain it, and that because of its almost divine nature it fit everywhere. I tried to argue for this idea of conscious Light but I couldn't convince him. What would you have said in my place ? I would like to build a line of defense for a future debate with this friend but I admit I am out of ideas.

Firstly, thank you for your very generous and kind words. I will endeavour to make future videos about different aspects of LOST, which might eventually include subjects such as "what is canon". As for your friend, the best way to try and convince him is by getting him to watch some of these videos. I have tried in my own life to explain the show to cynical fans, and been met with similar resistance. I partially created this video series in order to make my arguments and explanations more compelling and convincing to those who struggle to accept that LOST did make sense. Sometimes, people are better convinced by video essays than they are by one-to-one conversation, as the videos provide visual evidence and connections to reinforce the thesis being put forward.

Another dream I like is the one we never saw, but was told about through Claire's diary. Her dream that reads "I had that weird dream again, the one with the black rock I can't get away from. I try to leave it but it won't let me." Now, we know the Black Rock is not conscious, so it can't be the ship. I like the idea that it's a symbolic dream about the Man in Black (him being the "black rock") and The Island warning about him. And in the end she fell into his clutches. In season 6 she's on his side.

I'll admit on the first watch through I also thought MiB was giving the dreams because of the Goodspeed dream, but when watching back the show years later and seeing the other dreams I was like... "Why would MiB be giving Charlie these dreams? To sew discontent? Why not do something more effective and give Locke another crazy dream that gets him to kill another candidate somehow? And why get Eko to save the hatch when MiB was anti-light protection?" It just all felt really vague and inconsistent every time a dream was portrayed with this MiB explanation in mind. I genuinely started to see it as nonsensical. Until your amazing video! If the island is giving the dreams then that explains why the messaging is varied, and why it is symbolic rather than direct. You're right that people use the MiB as the explanation for everything they don't have a clear answer for.

I always theorized that Locke temporarily lost his ability to walk was when he time jumped to the moment the drug plane actually crashed and got shot in the leg by Ethan thus 30 years later he would be temporarily disabled. So I would think that moment played a factor in the chain of events that got Boone killed trying to rescue his fellow Oceanic Survivors. 😌

I'm not sure how his time travelling self getting shot at the Nigerian plane crash site circa 2001 by Ethan would affect present day Locke in 2004 at the same site (chronologically taking place three years after the crash/shooting). The only force with the power to heal and take away healing is The Island itself.

This is not necessarily well thought out and I agree with much of your thoughts but I want to push a little on mib not being involved in some dreams/visions. If mib took the form of the dead, why not dead Boone? You mentioned in The Others, that they burned their dead, Jacob’s rule, but our losties didn’t. You say the vision was the island projecting itself on Locke, that may be so but the magic of the island was also a part of mib. Someone who also had visions of the dead and is now a part of the source. I think becoming what he became was more than just smoke. It gave him the ability to be a part of most anyone he chose or who couldn’t protect themselves from him like Doogen could. He had his sights on John’ since the beginning. If the visions were of the future, I think mib was more than capable of giving John that glimpse. And he needed John on that man of faith path so he could accomplish what he needed to get off of the island. There seems to be three powers. The Island, Jacob, Smoke Monster. Although mib was wronged, he was a power of the island. It wasn’t what he wanted but it’s what he had.
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 3 жыл бұрын
Had we been shown that the Man in Black had this power then I might be more inclined to agree with your assessment but it is never demonstrated, and S6 visually confirms all of his abilities. There are certain things that only The Source can do. Jacob and the Man in Black have powers but they are limited. The reason why LOST has proved to be confusing for so long to some fans is because they don't recognise the presence of a third influencing force in everything that happens -- The Island itself, aka The Source. The prime mover. When we look at every dream on the show (both on and off island), the idea that they are coming from the MiB doesn't make any sense. Nor does crediting Jacob. Only the Horace Goodspeed dream momentarily implies MiB's influence, but this idea is contradicted within the same episode 20 minutes later when Locke meets Fake Christian in the cabin and tells him a contrasting story. Locke already believes Jacob is in the cabin, he doesn't need a dream to confirm this. All this dream does is help Locke find the cabin again (which the island has been intentionally moving). As I laid out in my video, The Source wanted similar goals achieved as the Man in Black at this point. Every other dream in the show makes more sense as coming from The Island/The Source. The idea that MiB had this power and used it only once is a bit flimsy to me. Another example of him being credited as being more powerful than he is and over-complicating what is a simple answer: The Island speaks to people through dreams and visions in order to guide them.

Loved the video, as always. The "Fire + Water" episode was always the one that bothered me, when it comes to the dreams. Like others, I feel bad for him because it feels like his actions in the first half of the episode are frustratingly out of his control, despite seeming to have not actually used the drugs he had stashed - at least based on my current understanding. (If I'm wrong about that, feel free to correct me. I just assumed we would've at some point seen him again go through the kind of withdrawal he went through in season 1 if he did end up using at this point. But admittedly I'm not particularly knowledgeable on the subject.) Your explanations of the dreams make perfect sense. But is there some reason why, unlike other dreamers on the show, Charlie's dreams made him actually unconsciously and unwillingly take real actions that were dangerous? (His actions at the end were willing and conscious, in response to his interpretation of his dream. But I'm talking about the first time, when he basically woke up by the water, holding Aaron.) Is it just that I'm wrong, and he *was* probably using again at some point? Or something else?
@LOSTEXPLAINED108
@LOSTEXPLAINED108 2 жыл бұрын
Everyone interprets dreams differently. Some characters can dismiss their dreams as simply their subconscious acting up, whilst other characters in LOST directly act on what they experience in their dreams. Charlie is not alone. Both Locke and Eko also treat their dreams as prophecy or instructions. In terms of Charlie specifically in the scene you cite -- where he takes Aaron into the sea -- he is simply sleepwalking. I don't think we need to assign a supernatural origin to the sleepwalking. It is most likely the result of his anxiety, withdrawal and general confusion over what is happening to him in those dreams. There are many cases in real life of people doing dangerous or extreme or out-of-character things during bouts of sleepwalking. In my opinion, 'Fire + Water' is more character-originated mystery than island-originated mystery, if that makes sense.

My feeling about Charlie Pace's path is that the island provided him with what it thought he most desired: heroin. A whole plane full of it in the statues. I also imagine that long term there might have been fields of poppies on top of a mountain for him to make opium and then heroin if he wanted to. By going clean and bonding to Claire, he was no longer committing to the island, so the island decided to do away with him. Pace was candidate-195. Desmond keeping Charlie alive so he can turn off the jammer in the Looking Glass seemed messed up. But if the Island wanted the freighter's crew to show up so that Ben (and then Locke) would turn the "frozen donkey wheel," then it manipulated them all to get there in quite a roundabout way. Really makes me feel they didn't have free will until after the Incident at the Swan brought them back to the present, coinciding with Jacob's demise. Or perhaps certain people were expendable and others weren't?

Ilana's group came on the Ajira flight with the Oceanic Six. They were following instructions from Jacob. He no doubt directed them to get on Ajira 316 but to maintain their anonymous cover until they got to the island and found each other. Charles Widmore was also following instructions from Jacob, hence why he was granted permission to return (with Desmond as a fail-safe) in order to help fight the Man in Black. He explains to Ben that Jacob came to him after the events of S4 and the freighter in order to get him back on side for the endgame. I had a problem with Locke's callous response to Boone's death, saying "It was a sacrifice the island demanded." I always felt that by having a vision of him wounded, Locke could have done things differently, like warning him to get out of the plane before it fell. Or telling Jack that Boone experienced crushing damage, which is different than falling. But if Boone had lived, maybe he would have died during the Barracks attack like the other suckers who followed Locke there? But what was the point of Boone going up in the plane and dying anyway? I thought the plane fell on the Pearl hatch, so Locke really misinterpreted the vision anyway, which had to be revisited in a future visit for them to find it.

I agree that the way Locke handled Boone's death was poorly judged and an example of Locke putting his own beliefs/secrets/plans ahead of the group. But he was technically right when he called Boone's death a sacrifice that The Island demanded. If Boone had not been in that accident then Locke would have had no motivation to go back to the hatch to beat his fist bloody against the door. Which in turn would not have stopped Desmond from killing himself in a moment of despair down there. Boone died so that Desmond could live, so that the world could survive. The dream/vision was always about leading Locke and Boone to the beechcraft, and leading Boone to his death.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Maybe. Perhaps they were helping each other? Something about Locke beating on the hatch and the light coming on? But it sounds like island's plan B to me. You don’t have to give any character a pass on the bad choices they make. The Island doesn’t force choice, it merely facilitates the choice. Locke’s whole story is a cautionary tale about the dangers of blind faith. He makes a lot of questionable moral decisions throughout the show. And he is responsible for his own actions. Desmond reaffirms the idea that these events were fated to happen in the Season Two finale when he tells Locke: “You say you don’t believe in destiny, that there’s no such thing as fate. But you saved my life that night so I could save yours.” The only reason why Locke was at the hatch door that night was because of what happened to Boone. The only reason Boone was in that accident is because of the dream that Locke had. The Island guides Locke to the plane then took away the use of his legs so Boone would have to make the choice to climb up into the plane. And these choices and outcomes lead Locke to unintentionally stopping Desmond from committing suicide that night, which would have left the button unmanned and the world would have ended. The Island facilitated these events. The characters made the choices. The outcomes of those choices feed into The Island’s tapestry. It’s destiny. It’s meant to happen this way.

If you watch Chapter Seven on "The Cabin" I explain *when* this scene in the wheel chamber is taking place. It is happening in 2007 after Ajira has already come back with John Locke's body. The reason why Fake Christian knows about Eloise Hawking and how to bring back the Oceanic Six is because this has already happened. And he has already scanned Locke's body and turned into him up top. Fake Christian is therefore repeating the exact movements and words Real Locke remembers Fake Christian saying to him. The Man in Black is essentially recreating this memory in real time as it happens, if that makes sense? It's part of this causal time loop in which the snake eats its own tail. MiB doesn't help Locke up because that is not what happened in Dead Locke's memory. Furthermore, the Man in Black cannot risk contaminating time travelling John Locke in any way by doing something different. In case that somehow disrupts or alters the timeline in some way. It has nothing to do with the fact that Locke is a candidate (a common theory) because we see MiB physically touch candidates at various points throughout the show. The only rule is that he cannot harm or kill them.

The Cabin Fever dream was most definitely MIB.

It most definitely was not MiB 😉 And I make my thoughts on that abundantly clear in this video.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 With all do respect (and I mean that because I love your videos), but I lived and breathed this show for 6 years. This was MIB convincing Locke to go to the cabin where he could speak "on behalf of Jacob" which would cause Locke to move the Island (this part got screwed up because Ben just had to do it), which would mean he'd cause time travel, which would then send Locke off the island, where he would die, so the others could bring him back, so that he could get Ben to kill Jacob.

But Locke already believed that Jacob resided in the cabin. He didn’t need a dream to convince him of that. The problem was that the cabin was moving and he needed to locate it. None of that was MiB’s doing. It was the Island, aligning events to happen at the right time. Also, there’s a discrepancy between what the dream says (Horace claims Jacob is there) and what the MiB says (that he is only speaking on Jacob’s behalf). Why would he contradict his own lie? It makes no sense to do that unless it is coming from two different sources who both want the same outcome for different reasons. It is never proven or demonstrated that the MiB had the power to give dreams. Not once is that confirmed. None of the other dreams make much sense having come from MiB either as I demonstrate in this video. The Cabin Fever dream is the only one that people reach for to justify this unproven power but it doesn’t even make sense within MiB’s long con to give contrary information to Locke. It is clear to me that every dream on the show came from the island and this was another case of guiding Locke towards his causal destiny. I know some fans continue to believe this MiB-dream theory, but I am not one of them and have justified my reasoning in this video.
