I'm pretty sure those mechanical men were the toys of the Robot that were sold in the late 60s. As an adult, I found one in the 90s at a toy store that carried reissues of older toys and models (had a model of the entire Jupiter, inside and out, was a pain to paint but looked great at the end). One was a toy of the Robot, about 12 inches high. Was very disappointed, as the paint/color scheme was entirely wrong, and the lights and treads did not work as advertised. I also had a Robot Keychain. Was a perfect replica, with arms that could extend and said three phrases (in his voice) when you pressed the bubble ("That does not compute" "Warning! Warning!" and "Danger! Danger, Will Robinson!")

I love those little robots! Wish I had one - wonder what happened to them all? Oh yeah, happy 97th birthday Mrs. Robinson!

This episode indeed seemed to promote a robot toy. In fact, there were two toys, a model kit and a mobile toy. The model kit was smallish like the sentries in this episode, but the mobile toy was big like the red robot. A friend of mine got a mobile toy but my parents got me the model kit. I think a combined chariot and Priplanis giant model kit also was for sale. These predate the Moebius Jupiter 2 and chariot kits, by the way. They came out during the run of the show.

He was already leading them and had his own devious personality, so can't imagine why they thought they need the Robot as leader.
